I think its best you go see a doctor to satisfy your curiosity.
But then, I think you may be asking too much of the 3 year old smiley

Thanks to y'all for ur inputs, not that I'm comparing him with other kids but he doesn't seem to remember what he doesn't seem to recollect and process information easily, I know this is not his fault but he seem to be easily distracted, he also finds it hard to concentrate on things, doesn't respond actively in class. But the irony of it all is dt he's eager to learn, he's always happy for me to read stories to him, he's active and social, and displays some level of intelligent but his writing skill, recognition skill and speech skill are at a snail speed. Currently, its him and one ther boy dt are lagging behind in his kg class, a class of thirteen, dis was also d case wen he was in nursery. Teachers and parents, pls what is the way out?

In his early school days, Albert Einstein was so slow in learning and comprehension that he was considered a little bit dim-witted.
Thomas Edison always came last or close to last position during his early school years at the age of 7 that his teacher told the mum to withdraw him from school.
Isaac Newton was considered to be the most absent-minded man to have ever lived. He was easily distracted by whatever interests him and always came last position in class, they had to withdraw him from school. It is said that his mother sent him to the farm one day-- he was still very young--to bring a donkey home. Isaac Newton got distracted by his thoughts that he only realised when he got home that the donkey had slipped out of the rope and ran away!
Your child is special...all children are, but do not handle him with iron hands because of his slow learning. There are things he's interested in. Make sure you spend more time with him and tutor him personally in a playful manner. Teach him through what he loves doing and not through what you want him to do. Children love it when they learn something new. They'd recite it to you just to buy your affection. By the time he starts understanding, you'll be marvelled at the creativity and brilliance hidden behind his tender heart and eyes...

Re: Help! My 3 Year Old Cannot Identify Letters And Numbers by Nobody: 10:36pm On Oct 25, 2014
Hi @Nikkygold, my little input is:

A: don't believe evy nonsense u read on d net esp onforeign fora. Ur child doesn't hav dyslexia anythng.
Don't eva eva prophesy such upon dat innocent boy. As a man thinketh,so is he. Don't look at dat boy wit suspicion.

B: Wen a child is not doing too well in sch, its partly d teacher's fault. Som teachers are so mean dat children fear dem because they bark&scare them, making d learning environment uncondusive 4assimilation.

2ndly, some teachers are too non chalant 2wards children whom they noticed are lagging behind. Most private schs employ unqualified teachers so they lack teaching skills.

My neice was experiencing d same thng until we decided 2 change her frm dat sch&we also paid her teacher 2b doing extra moral lessons for her for 2hrs evryday of d wk. This is just d teacher&d child wit full wrapped attention.

I'm proudly telling u dat frm dis sept to dis oct 2014,she can identify colours(unlik b4). She's identifying al d alphabets (within a mth)&improving on numbers too.She counts frm 1-40 correctly&identifies nos to some extents.

So i'l advice u observe d sch standard vry well.4get ephysy. What even made my sis 2hav a rethink abt d former sch is: some of the teachers spell wrongly in d communication bk&my neice was so scared of d sch lik wen u tak her 2sch,she'l cry eh! Unlike her new sch now where she goes wit so much joy.

Finally,during wkends,try&coach him how 2write.Buy a fancy slate 4him&reward&praise him wen he gets anythng correctly. He'l b motivated&encouraged.
Anyway,i said enuf. Don't blame d child alone.

Re: Help! My 3 Year Old Cannot Identify Letters And Numbers by Nobody: 8:25am On Oct 26, 2014
Well, ma...
Congratulation on the following..
1. he's eager to learn.
That means he will learn many things.
A. Buy him the children C.D(s) that teaches this thing.
B. Sacrifice your favourite T.V shows for him to watch his C.D
C. Buy him Alphabet Books that have pictures.
D. Buy him workbooks that will help him trace whatever is written in the book.
E. Allow him to write rubbish...nonsense..I.e Don't be there when he is writing. Come back to tell
'Fair'
'Good'
'very good'
'very very good'
Don't say
'Bad'
'Very Bad'..
If it seems bad, use the word 'Fair'.
2. he's always happy for me to read stories to him.: Allow him listen to news with you...

3. he's active and social: Watch out, you are building a public speaker in your house.
You are nurturing a Leader...
4 and displays some level of intelligent: He is someone that needs to reread watever he has learnt before, constantly. Open him to many good and knowledgible programmes and see what will happen.

As for his lagging behind...
I can prove it is from the teacher. When I was a teacher before I left for University, I got the opportunity to teach Primary school (Primary 1-6, Nursery 1-2).
I noticed somethings that I will still draw out in a story.
Teachers practically leave children that are not doing too well and face the ones that are doing well ...Why?
1. They will quickly cover the syllabus of the school.
2. They will not go through the pain of spending an hour or so with a single child when there other children.
Teachers flog these children alot whenever they miss some questions thereby bringing fear into the mind of these children.
Since, this child do not understand what the teacher taught him/her he expect his mother to show love to him.
But if his/her mother flog the child for not being brilliant he begin to lose focus of what he know.
So, you need to teach him...
I was still thinking of this today before I saw this topic, all parents need to teach their children...
The best students in my class-those days- were students that are being taught by their Parents...
And In Jesus name, you will start seeing great changes in him...

@ francawilson: I do appreciate ur contribution. May God honour u as u made out time to comment. Dyslexia isn't even a disease. Its just a condition describing a form of learning challenge caused primarily by how d brain process info. due to how their brain is wired. Doesn't affect intelligence, so they are normal children just with challenges in d pace at which they learn. Many of d xtics match what I'm experiencing with my son. But thanks for strengthening may faith, he doesn't have it in Jesus name.
Ure right about d teacher, we dint discover dt he was lagging way behind in his class until his anty went on mat leave and anoda teacher took over,dt was d third term in Nursery class, she discovered dt not much was done by my son compared to others, imagine writing 1-3 for 2 terms and still cannot scribble them on his own. Partly my fault cos I always hold his hand to write his home wrk not knwing he was just to be guided, never knew dis until dis new aunty wrote dis on his home wrk. Thanks for sharing ur niece's experience, I hope to share mine too as improvements starts to show.

@ Godswill: thanks a lot
@ Divepen: I appreciate ur contributions sir. U're right about his teacher, despite paying for lesson, there was nothing to show for it. He was taught to write a-d for a term a fellow teacher explained that d teacher may not go further if d pulpil cld not identify d letters. I ended up teaching him d other letters myslf but the problem of IDENTIFICATION still persist. That's our main challenge! I play him CD teaching alphabets, we trace, write, color and count together. Though, his writing skill is improving, his speech is clearer, but d identification problem is still there.
Thanks again sir, I'll put more effort in teaching him as God helps me.

When you said he gets easily distracted, I will say you should notice things that distract him. I guess it's his mind. He's very brainy, pay close attention to him.

I saw an Indian film that deals with something like this. The boy has problems with identifications of numbers and alphabets. His mind pictures alphabets and numbers in the opposite directions. He is condemned and they believe he will amount to nothing, until he finds an art teacher who is able to understand him and begins to teach him alphabets with drawings and sounds. He teaches the boy to write while having his eyes closed. The boy is very good at drawing and eventually, he changes. The boy even wins an award as the best artist.

That's my quota. I pray he gets better.

Thank you for nurturing the next generation.

@ oma4u, thanks for ur input, God bless u. He notices things frm his environment which distracts him, he might be doing his home work and notice a fly, my son will comment so I have to like scold him a bit for him to concentrate and finish his wrk. His teacher complained of dis too d last time d sch organised open day btw parent and teacher. My dilema is how to make him identify letters, numbers and even colours.

@Nikkygold4life;
I watched a movie d other day,d child was dyslexic abi had Attention deficit disorder (one of dem)& wasn't learning&writing at d pace lik other children.

So a child psychologist told d mother of d boy 2buy him calender wit alphabets &numbers&paste it at his room&also buy him somethng lik a slate&duster&keep it at his reach.

Allow him 2draw nonsense. Wit tym,he wil b imitating it on his slate. She told d mother 2b vry patient wit d child&b consistent in teaching d child. Work at d child's pace.

She said sometyms children don't write fast on books but write better on walls&slate. It reminded me dat i learnt how 2write wit a slate. Those days,u use slates til u enter primary sch.

I'm very sorry this is coming late, well my son has really improved over the years, age, constant reading of school notes and text books helped him a lot. This session is a lot better, his comprehension has increased and his writing is a lot better. Not that I'm comparing my son to other children, I know, he's intelligent and smart but he still has speed challenges. For instance, even if he had mastered a definition of something, he still takes his time to process such information but at the end of the day, he will still tell you. Also, he's still one of d slowest in copying notes from the board.
But he has gained a lot of confidence now, I always tell him that even if he's slow at copying or finishing, he is intelligent and smart, we read comprehension ahead of class when I'm chanced so that it will be easier for him during class work.

Most importantly, lots of love and understanding, at times, when he compares himself with his younger brother; "my brother gets everything but I don't... and he would start crying", I always scold him for that and then encourage him to always pay attention to his questions before answering cos attention span is one of his challenges.

@ mumjjj, just relax your son is better off than mine at that age. Just keep following him up, always make learning fun for him. Children are not cut out for serious work at that age, it's just the environment we found ourselves.

Yes, he can identify all the letters.
My worry now is his lack of concentration

@mumjjj In my own opinion, I think you son has ADHD which in any way doesn't interfere with intelligence, I think you should do your research on how to manage him, you've got a genius there sis.
