Southerners (SE/SS) do that a lot. Go to most government agencies, Hausa is lingua franca.

If you meet a southerner, they start to speak English. SMh
I live in Enugu,99% communication is in Igbo.. So your comment is strange to me

That is a common practice in the South South and South East.
Parents are even ashamed to speak the native dialect to their children.
They bring up their kids to see the language as archaic and crude.
Go to the West, the yorubas are very proud of their language.
They speak it everywhere, even in the offices.
And they force you who is not Yoruba to learn it because the will speak it to you

An office is an official place and should be treated as such. English is the official language of Nigeria,so it's the acceptable means of communication.
Imagine walking into an office for an assignment and the secretary is speaking her own tribal language which you don't understand
...nonsense...Same reason Igbo language will die soon..northerners and westerners don't reason this way when it comes to Hausa and Yoruba. I have found out that Igbo's try to behave so western and some youth form inability of speaking the language...its very common in the east... India official language is it not English but they are proud of thee Hindi, Bengali,Urdu etc and also there culture...many igbos mostly youths feel its belittling to speak Igbo and I know what am saying unlike Hausa and Yoruba that are very proud to speak the language anywhere and anyplace....

There are no truly international language in Nigeria.
No single one.

So I can understand his point of view.
There are places where indigenous languages should be spoken as a priority, the seats of power is another matter entirely.

Government is a serious business, open to all and sundry. English should be the official language.

Though his aversion to igbo language is very wrong

Igbo speakers should speak igbo if they want to. But English should be the official lingo in government.

Guess you haven't been to the north.
Was in Kano 2008 when i visited my Sis. She was then a student of Kano state college of education. I sat almost an hour in her class and understood nothing; cos the mallam teaching barely speaks english.
And you think it's a good thing for a lecturer to be teaching in Hausa when the official language is English? What happens to others like you who aren't Hausa? How would they cope or you would be forced to learn it even if you are not interested in doing so? I'm sorry to say this but this is partly the reason why people from such areas perform below par relative to others due to conflict of interest.

Yul Edochie, please do not use such lies and sentiment to drum up support. Any Igbo elder or father that denounces Biafran groups because his son wants to run for governor should hide his face in shame as well....No?

That's what white people convinced our ancestors to believe during colonialism!.

The right language an Igbo official should speak in Igbo land should be Igbo language. That's how it ought to be.

It's time to get out of the box.

I can totally relate. Was in Lagos not too long ago and one man made it a point of duty to always speak Yoruba to me whenever he saw me even after telling him i wasn't Yoruba. He would teach me at least one new sentence everyday.

They speak Hausa language to get the juiciest contracts in Abuja and speak Yoruba to take advantage of you smellos from the waste so as to buy up your properties and f*ck your women for free and by the time you discover that the Yemi that spoke your language is actually Nnamdi, it's already to late to do anything but come on Nairaland to whine like a snake that licked over-peppered gbegiri slime.

Nigerians are moronic cowards. Would Yul Edochie have had a heart attack if he gave a name to his phantom commissioner?
You just go on twitter and spout anonymous rubbish.
I can equally wake up tomorrow and say :
"an Emir who can't speak Hausa. If you're that Emir, God is watching you".
To me what he said is enough.
If he said more, people will say he's envious of the commissioner. Or out on a vendetta.

What he said is enough for the commissioner to change his attitude and indeed all public officers.

On the other hand, Igbo people being some of the most ardent travelers, the said commissioner might be a diaspora Igbo who can barely speak Igbo.

You are correct. One of the reasons why i don't like this inter tribal marriage of a thing is because the mode of communication in the house would be English and once that happens, it won't be possible for the children to understand and speak their native dialect.

But when you marry from your tribe and mode of communication at home is native, then it will definitely be easy for the children. All my children by God's grace must have ibibio names and they must speak and understand the dialect.
