The trial of Seidu Adeyemi, the alleged killer of an Ondo ex-deputy governor’s daughter, Khadijat Oluboyo, at the Ondo State High Court could not proceed on Monday as there was no lawyer to represent the accused.

The state High Court sitting in Akure resumed hearing on the murder case against Adeyemi on Monday, but there was no legal appearance for the defendant, Punch Metro reports.

Adeyemi was arrested by the Ondo State Police Command in July 2018 for allegedly killing the former deputy governor’s daughter at his house in the Oke Aro area of Akure.

The defendant was alleged to have buried her remains inside his room for six days.

At the court on Monday, the leader of the prosecution team and the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kola Olawoye, told the court that all necessary documents had been served for the commencement of the trial.


Olawoye lamented the inability of the defendant to have a legal representative, adding that it was constitutional for him to have a lawyer for fair hearing.

He said:

“By law, in a capital offence of this nature, a defendant must be represented by a counsel. That is his constitutional right to fair hearing.

“He must provide a lawyer of his choice to represent him, but if he fails after two adjournments, then the court will pick a lawyer for him.”

Olawoye noted that the state was interested in the case because of the circumstances leading to the death of the deceased.

He said:

“The state decided to take up the case in order to know what led to the death of the lady, and we want the defendant to explain to the whole world the part he took in the killing of the student, if any.”

In his ruling, the judge, Justice Samuel Bola, ordered prison officials to liaise with the prison welfare officer to contact the defendant’s family in order to provide a lawyer to represent him, adding that the suit would be given an accelerated hearing.

He adjourned the case till October 2, 2018.

My issue lies with the court ruling that one must provide a 'legal defendant' when you are involved in a case.. Why can you not chose to defend yourself when you know that you are not financially capable of affording the services of a good lawyer?...
Thats how a lawyer i hired charged me 7k per appearance in court.. I didn't have a choice because he met all the qualities i needed and he was recommended by a good friend.. but when he kept pushing for adjournments, telLing me that the accused would get bored and request to nullify the case so we would settle out-of-court, or the judge would grant us the win we truely and plainly deserved, then i quicky knew that this lawyer and law in general is not necessary.. We eveNtually settled out of court when my demands were met.. but that is not my point here.. We should be given the option of lawyer or yourself..

I wondered what we human want in life, you will ask God to give you opportunity but when the opportunity finally arrived we abused it.i have never read a story so touching like these one before. Some guys are vampires, you have girl like these, what again do you want? may looking at these girl one will see that she is humble, cut, respectful, loyal and contented but, one animal has ended these girl carrier. Each time I read this case I am sad .Iam sad because we are paying for the the effects of social malice in our society. Many young yahoo yahoo boys and girls are out their buying cars and building houses and their parents don't ask them questions. Instead they y are covering them. Many of them have become customers of police force. They arrest them so as to collect money from them. Every day yahoo guys are increasing in our society. Who knows the next victims? Churches and mosques don't preach morals again but riches and riches! parents don't have time again for their children.....Our society is breeding thugs ritualists and demons. and nobody cares.
