1.Is it a must for one to take SAT & TOFEL/IELTS test If the university does not demand it as a requirement for admission?

writing gives one opportunities to get scholarships. it's advisable to write them

2. I graduated from a polytechnic and have an HND civil engineering, but planning to study Electrical Engineering as an undergraduate, as I have work experience in that field, with some certificate and by God's grace a liscence soon ....is this a good move to make as it concerns visa approval?

why not evaluate your transcript, take the GRE and apply for graduate studies rather than undergraduate again. although visa approval is a case-by-case study. some people have actually gone for another undergraduate. so it is relative

3. I read Some of the interview transcript and most of the guys applied to more than 1 school and V. O seems to ask how many school... Must one apply to more than one school?
not really but spreading applications gives one multiple chances.people have applied just 1 school & still got their visas.

these are my humble suggestions. Experienced persons will also give better opinions

@nelem,

please my uncle who is a lecturer in one of the Nigeria college of education with two masters, and has been admitted and paid his school fee in one of the university in US, was denied visa this morning.

Yesterday was suppose to be his interview date, so he went without is I-20, and was asked to go and bring it and come back for his interview, and was given a letter to come around 9am today and present his I-20, that he would be issued his visa.

luckily for him, the courier service they used to send the package called him that yesterday immediately he left the embassy to come pick his I-20 that they are currently infront of his house, so he picked it up, and went back there as he was told to come from monday to thursday from 9am.

and finally he was denied.

My question is:

1. What would have prompted them to denied him?
2. What time can he re-apply, as the school he chose has resumed yesterday
3. Does he have to contact the school to contact the embassy? or what do you think he can do to this case.

please note that hes going alone, as hes married with two kids.

thanks i await your fast response

Thanks for your answers... Am planning to use an agent but a friend adviced... DYI... Just as he did and was successful. Am New here and I want to learn

If you have an HND degree why go for another undergraduate? I would suggest you apply directly into a graduate program in Electrical that you want and find maybe an area of interest where Civil intersects with Elect so that way, you are advancing your knowledge in a multidisciplinary field.

Applying to more than one university only increases your chances of getting admission. Knowing that programs are generally competitive, you are not guaranteed a place in a particular program and that is why the VOs uses that as a signal to know if one is a genuine student or one's intention is to use the Visa as a means of running away from our country. That said, there are cases where you think you can compete strongly in a particular school and what you realize is that you do not get in while some other schools that you feel you are not competitive enough gives you admission. I would suggest at least 3 schools with one of them being a safety school at least.

Agents are most times not sincere depending on what type of agency they are and in some cases, their perception of you. They have their interest to protect which could either be making as much money as they can from you without any compensating benefit or improving their agency by guiding students properly. It isn't an easy process doing it yourself however, there is more to learn if you do it yourself and that way, you can take responsibility for the success or otherwise of your application.

He needs to tell us how the interview was to know what could be a reason why he was denied. In my opinion, before I read from him, I am seeing him as an unprepared person. Who goes for a student visa interview without his/her I-20? As for reapplying, he can do that anytime he feels he is prepared enough.

My international passport would expire by Aug 2019. Would it be any hindrance to my visa considering I would be issued a 2yr visa which would definitely be beyond the intl passport expiry date.

Anyone who has gone through this? Let me know if it is possible to renew my passport before the Interview or go with it like that since it isn't expired yet

Do you have a campus job offer? And again it depends on the state and city you’re going, and even your self, in some state it’s very hard to get an off campus job being a student, while in some state like Cali, Na them dey rush us, It’s better you get in touch with a current student of that school.

Please guys. I need serious advice.

My sister is my sponsor. She's married for 2yrs now.
Her bank statements still has her maiden name (Same surname with me) but she already changed her name in most of other things.
Now when filling ds160. I'm confused on what to fill. whether her current full name or name on bank statement. and also If I send the bank statements to my school. my I20 will come with the name on it.
I don't know which name to use.

Help

Use the name on the statement of account, but to be on the safer side, get her marriage certificate so you can include it if it ever comes up during the interview.

Do you have funds for this semester alone? Or do you have funds for the full duration of your programme? If you have funds for the full programme duration, then you can look for/apply for a graduate assistantship position which will pay you a monthly stipend that can cover your living expenses. However, if you have funds for only this semester, then even with a graduate assistantship job, you still won't be able to complete your tuition and fees. On the other hand, you can still contact your school to inquire if there are other available funding options available to you. You never know. A friend of mine who got admitted to a masters programme in a private school some years back with a cost of attendance of $65k was given a $40k scholarship. She contacted the school as she still couldn't afford the remaining $25k. She was eventually offered an additional $15k to make a total of $55k. Another guy who also tried same didn't get anything. Moral of the story is that you never know until you try.

It depends on when you will be interviewing for your visa. As stated previously, your passport needs be valid for at least 6 months by the time you are issued your visa. However, this is where your case gets a little tricky. If you're looking at Fall 2019, you're allowed to attend your visa interview up to 120 days in advance of your school resumption date. So assuming that your school resumes in August, the earliest date that you can interview for your visa will be sometime in April. Given that your passport expires in August, then it will be less than 6 months to its expiration when you're interviewing and that wouldn't work. You may need to renew it to avoid any complication. Typically, passports are renewed about 6 months to its expiration.

To all F1 visa hopefuls, here is my transcript, if i can make it...then anyone determined enough can make it.

I had my visa interview on Aug 28th 2018 at the Abuja Consulate.

A little bit of my background....I'm married and also a mother of 3, i work in a private Company here in Nigeria. I started this journey in 2016 from Part 12/13 and now part 14 God decided to settle me finally...along the way i was denied first for B1/B2 in 2016, scammed of some substantial amount in March 2018, denied Canadian Study visa in May 2018....went through 3 different agents all to no avail.....this time around i decided enough is enough i must do it myself. So from the admissions processing to the end of this F1 study visa application i did by myself. So i know first hand what its like to Fail, and yet i never stopped pursuing my dream of studying abroad.

Before going in finally for my interview...i went into the bathroom, and gave myself a perp talk...and also asked the Holy Spirit to take over.

I was on the queue and while waiting I noticed pink papers flying around....i refused to be fazed by the rejections around.i was interviewed by the man in window 9.

V.O: hi goodmorning (a small smile)
Me: good morning

V.O: passport and I20
Me: handed it over

V.O: i see you've chosen the California State University San Bernardino..why this school?
Me: I chose Calstate SB because they have one of the best business management programs in the world, according to US News and World report from 2014 till date.

V.O: He looked at my i20 and said whats the relationship btw business management and information technology(thats whats stated in my i20).
Me: i said yea ...(smiling) My course is not fully captured in the i20, im going to be studying an MBA with a concentration in Business Intelligence and Information Technology.

V.O: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: 2 schools...i mentioned them, University of Massachusetts Lowel and CSUSB.

V.O: oh, I see, Why Calstate SB ( for the 2nd time)
Me: Actually i was drawn to CSUSB because of the course Business Intelligence and Information Technology, the course objectives particularly gives me all i need.

V.O: while typing his attention was drawn to something...next he turned to me and asked have you ever applied to any other schools in anyother country?
Me: i said yes..i applied to the University of Guleph in Ridge Town, Ontario CA.

V.O: (He tried to play a fast one on me here by asking) University of Guleph is in Waterloo right?
Me: The name sounded off...i said no, not at all...University of Guleph is in Ridge Town Ontario CA.
V.O : Oh i remember now.

V.O: why are you going for your Masters?
Me: I've been offered a conditional promotion in my Company as a business development Mgr for surpassing my monthly and quarterly targets successively, one of the requirements for this offer is i must have a masters degree.

V.O: if you had an opportunity to study in any other Country...will you take the Offer?
Me: i said no...not with this course I'd be doing..the course offers me all i need.

V.O: what do you do for a living?
Me: I work in xyz as a Senior Business Executive in the Business Development Unit.

V.O: So what do you do for your Company when you resume work every morning?
Me: i develop business...I'm tasked with sourcing for new clients, ensuring that xyz's products are evenly distributed in our local markets here.

V.O: May i see your bank statement?
Me: i passed them over

V.O: how will you fund your program?
me: first i said my husband and i earn monthly and then I'd still be earning 50% of my monthly take home because of the conditional promotion from my Company, I'm also a director for a local production outfit here in Nigeria and then my husband and uncle will also support me fully.
VO was perusing my bank statements at this time.

V.O: i see a lodgement from xyz company
Me: Oh yes..that's my company, Im a director in that Company.

V.O: (He was now on my sponsors statement) why is this person willing to give you this amount of money?
me: I said he's my uncle,he's actually my dads only brother and he does alot for me from time to time

V.O: I will need to verify this statements, i hope you know if found to be false, youll be banned for 10years.
Me: i said Im aware..go ahead
He asked me this 3times
if it checks out, you will have your visa (photocopied my 120)
Me: Thats fine.

N.B
All this happened within ten minutes or so in the most cordial mood possible, my composure was 199%, i answered all the questions looking into his eyeballs. I was also very well dressed.

Exactly One week after I collected my pp.

It has been a very busy period for me.

I took time preparing my application. I was over prepared.

Tips: Fund your account, be truthful, look and act responsible and then pray, pray, dont stop praying.

I want to thank each and everyone that posted his/her transcripts, it helped me a lot.To all that did mock with me,my God reward you.

Congratulations!
Did you receive any funding from the school?

A virgin passport won't be a reason why you are denied a visa. I read about someone on this thread who said she had to travel to different countries so she could have travel history and boost her chance of getting the visa but was still denied.

I really don't think that would be a problem. Just do your own bit. Also, make sure it's not an expired passport.
