The construction of the $50 million (N18bn) Transportation University to be located in Daura, Katsina State will start by next year, the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said.

The university is to be built by China Civil and Construction Company (CCECC) and is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to develop qualified manpower that will manage the many railways facilities across the country and other transportation facilities, Amaechi added.

The minister told journalists in Abuja recently that in addition to Katsina, another Transportation University might be built in Rivers State to meet the growing demand of manpower in the transportation sector.

He said the contract has already been awarded to CCECC and the construction would have commenced if the governor of Katsina State had provided land for it, adding that once the state government provided the land, CCECC will mobilize to site and fence the land for construction to start.

He said the young Nigerians being trained on scholarship in China on Railway Engineering upon completion of their studies would be deployed to teach in those universities for a period of time before they are allowed to do other endeavours.

“If we get the land, the fencing will start this year. The CCECC has written to ask for land from the state government,” he said.

Finally finally after 3 years on nairaland and after many times on STC and front page, I can gladly say First to comment. It feels good but not spectacular

Good development with a lot of "buts". We need more industries and business, enough with the glorified secondary schools if they won't be properly funded. Also d school should have sited in a populated place with good mode of transportation.

D Maritime University dat caused controversy recently is still there but yet d govt wants to open a university of transportation in Daura where students who studied railway engineering will lecture... Clannishness and misplaced priority is written all over that project. What stops the govt from establishing a school of transport study to be affiliated or incorporated to one of our major public universities instead of wasting scarce fiscal funds on building such school from the scratch.

You See why I loath this anachronistic regime so much. The world is going beyond nepotism and clannishness but this administration that is bereft of modern ideas is trying to drag us back.

Thing is, politicans HAVE always sited prestige projects in their hometown.

Now, I don't like the idea, and I also think we don't need new universites....but that is always how it has been. And that is how it would conmtinue to be, unless your governors and LG chairmen get serious and start developing every nook and cranny of their locality.

GEJ was actually clueless and foolish!..... (I'm holding myself back not to use really harsh words).

Look at PMB, that's what brotherhood is all about.
But for 6 years, ogogoro GEJ couldn't even clean up Ogoni land. He didn't even give portable water to his people building good roads for them.

Kai, today you want infrastructure, if they give you infrastructure you will complain that its agricultural you want. They give you agriculture you will complain its industry you want. If they give you industry you will complain that there is no skilled labour to run the industry so whats the point of building it. Now they have provided means of equipping you so you can build, manage and maintain yet you complain it's those others you want.

And for goodness sake, who locates a university in a populated area?
