I will start watching Nollywood movies when they start making Sci-fi and action movies and not all these love story, village people babalawo movies.

Sometimes I don't blame them for producing rubbish all the time.

Re: I Hardly Watch Regular Nollywood Movies - Kunle Afolayan by omohayek: 8:33am On Sep 16, 2018
Afolayan is right about Nollywood, and, if anything, he's actually understated the scale of the problem: the industry is seriously lacking in competent acting, editing, cinematography, sound production, writing - you name it, and Nollywood falls woefully short. Being able to produce large quantities of awful, boring nonsense can't in any way compensate for the low production values and lack of ambition that plagues the sector.

Now, having said all of the above, I think it's also important to consider why things are as bad as they are, and there the answer comes down to 2 things, namely the nature of the audience, and the state of the Nigerian film industry's finances. As frustrated as I often am about the low intelligence and general ignorance of the average Nairalander, the funny thing is that even such mediocrity is more than the truly ordinary Nigerian on the street can boast of, as even the great majority of Nigerians who can read are barely literate at best, thanks to the abysmal state of the country's mass educational system; what all of this means for Nollywood is that there just isn't much demand for intellectually sophisticated, artistically ambitious fare, as most of the potential viewers don't have what it takes to appreciate such things. Ambitious, professionally-trained filmmakers like Afolayan will never appeal to the average gala-hawker, gate-man, tailor, petty-trader or subsistence farmer, but these are the kinds of people who make up more than 90 percent of Nigeria's potential viewing audiences.

The other side of the coin is that even to the extent that a small minority of Nigerians are truly hungry for better-quality films, there simply isn't the distribution system in place to get the movies to this group without rampant piracy completely destroying all hope of profitability. Nigeria's governments, which can't even keep basic infrastructure like roads in decent order, don't even make a token effort at enforcing copyright, so anyone who wants to make a quality film must engage in a mad rush to squeeze as much profit out of the few film theaters there are in the country before the Alaba Market pirate crew starts selling the movie for pennies - which they start doing within a few days of any release - and even with the cinemas there is little movie makers can do to ensure they are receiving their fair share of the revenues, so they get cheated again. Under such circumstances, it is madness to put any serious money or effort into making a movie in Nigeria, as there is simply no hope of ever recouping one's costs.

If Nigerian film-making is ever to rise to a higher level, it will probably only be by targeting African audiences living in developed countries, and the best hope of achieving that would be through digital platforms like Amazon Movies or Apple's iTunes. Trying to make high-quality films for the Nigerian masses is simply a waste of time and effort, and will remain so for as long as Nigeria remains a shithole where laws are meaningless and the great masses are both poor and badly educated.

Give Nollywood actors/actressess roles in, say... Black Panther, and you'll see them get exposed for the monotonous, one-dimensional, liveless, unimaginative charlatans that they are.

What the New Nollywood still hasn't found is the African flavour

It is okay to do new age movies, but don't throw away the Africanness of the movie. These new Nollywood movies just have a bunch of people trying to use fune to scatter our ears and fake British-American accents

Hehe.. I support him. Though I hardly see movies.
Most Nollywood movies have nothing to offer, even the supposed entertainment we ought to get is nothing. Not to sound tribalistic but those Igbo Nollywood movies are the worse.. Hian.. Long, usual and boring storylines. The Yoruba ones and their subtitles na die grin Every actress is white, every problem is diabolical and no professionalism.. I saw one yesterday where a lady at the background of the scene was battling with a system just to log in to the system that is supposedly hers. She kept punching and punching grin
The ones from the North eh, I manage to read the subtitles but they are just like Indian movies too.. Too long and dull.

Regardless, I appreciate them and I know the industry can always get better.

Hollywood sci-fi movies all the way for me.. Those are the movies that portray the realities we don't realize cheesy

I think people who watch Indian, Korean, Phillipino and some Telemundo movies should not criticize Nollywood though. grin
Ur my kinda GIRL!!!
