This section has been very helpful.

I am a young lawyer and on the verge of rounding off my NYSC.

I have been thinking of how to secure a good future hence have been considering migrating to Canada or the USA.

Law is not a STEM course and switching career may not be easy at all.

I am wondering if there are opportunities for Lawyers in Canada or the USA (or even New Zealand, Australia.)

I am looking at migrating via Masters degree --- that''s if I can gain a full or partial scholarship with 3.9 CGPA on a 5 point scale or migrating through Canadian FSW.

Or do I just stay back in Nigeria?

I can raise 2 million naira.

Suggestions needed please. I am tired. Seriously tired because the future looks bleak.

I'm a legal attorney in New York... And the legal market in the U.S is quite lucrative and competitive, 2 million naira won't get u anywhere... You need something huge financially, you can apply for your masters in any cheap university and also enroll for the American Bar Exams.

your law degree can only wash plates there

unless u have other stuff to do

best you use your 2M and do a business locally and grow it before you think of going abroad

crayfish and Oil and other stuff are very cheap in the south, with even 1M you can take these to ABJ and LAG and make good profit weekly

2M Abroad is nothing

I am not directly involved with Law as a course, but i know how hard it is for some graduates of professional courses to transfer qualifications and experience. E.g. Doctors in Canada

Sadly as someone pointed out....NGN 2 Million at black market rate = $ 5,555.56....

2 months you don start to drink garri

Ogbeni, you go need to take another qualifying exam and go back to law school to practice, at least for New Zealand.

Or you can work as a legal research assistant or executive in a Law Firm.

Hope you are not planning to tell the visa officer that you want to migrate with masters degree. They will just send you back to the cage grin called Nigeria

Sorry, I couldn't read your post with a straight face.

Unlike a lot of professions here in Naija, being a lawyer is very, very lucrative if you know what you're doing. While relocating abroad is a good idea, considering the state of things here, 2 million Naira is far from enough.

A new graduate without any experience should open a law firm?

You couldn't have responded any better

Back to the matter:

I'd advice you to migrate to Canada, for the following reasons:
- migration is easy
- you have the opportunity to study and work. You need to work because 2m is almost equal to nothing
- you can easily 'balance well' if you sit for their bar exam or whatever they call it (equivalent of law school in Nigeria), since you already have LL.b. Once you qualify, you'll be permitted to work as an attorney. If you're serious, I think you can finish it within one year. But the worst case scenario should be two years.

Whether Canada or not, my dear brother, make sure you leave Nigeria

Stay here and practice. The grass isn't always green at the other side. The lawyer I know who went there is not practicing law and it isn't easy practicing over there as you may have to pass their bar exams and stuff.

I am a young lawyer as well so i feel your pain when you say the future looks bleak for young lawyers. You must learn the ropes here and cut your teeth and then money will start flowing.

This is a phase you will get past. Good luck!

2m can fetch you enough money in Nigeria if you know appropriate business to do. 2m is nothing in Canada or USA

Law is the worst degree one can ever get especially in Nigeria and Africa. All of my lawyer friends regret ever getting this degree. They are one of the most hungry people in Nigeria...

Good Day, I suggest you apply for your masters in the USA.

That's my simple suggestion for you.

Thank you.

Wishing you all the very best in life.

Cheers...

If you stay back in Nigeria, with the 2m you can open a law firm or set up a business.
If you plan traveling out, I think you should start writing GRE and IELTS and score very high in them. There are scholarships for most schools in the US or canada. If you do secure scholarship, I don't know if they will allow you work. Just do more search.
My Advise is, if you have the 2m handy, pls do business in Nigeria.
If you don't have the 2m handy, pls, start writing GRE AND IELTS
