I drove in silence till I got close to their house.

'I'll always love you, Alex,' she said. 'Good night.'

'Good night,' I managed to say.

I shook my head again. Something told me if I continued like this, Steph would soon put me in trouble. Big trouble. I wanted to avert the trouble, but how?

That night I dreamed that a woman opened the door of a mansion for me to go inside. I was taken to a dinning-room where there were all sorts of food. I was enjoying myself and having the best of all the food.

All of a sudden, a young lady came and asked me to accompany her out. I obliged her but she disappeared after we stepped out of the gate. I wanted to go back inside, but the gate was closed and remained closed. I opened my eyes.

I was sweating. What a dream! Then it struck me that it was a very significant dream. I decided to interpret the dream. Madam B was represented by the woman that led me in. The lady that led me out must be Steph.

Oh God! I must be careful with Steph! Madam had warned me about her, and I must not flout her directive! I must be very careful, not only with Steph, but other ladies. I thought over the dream again. I hardly had dreams, but anytime, I did, and it was significant like this, it usually made impact. I knew the only way to prevent it from happening was to be prayerful and be very careful. Right there, I went on my knees and mouthed some prayers.

I decided I would have to fast and pray. I declared a seven-day fasting. I needed to do it as a matter of urgency. I must not allow Steph or any lady for that matter to bring me down.

I went back to sleep. The following morning, I decided that my fasting would start that very day. There was no time to waste again.

I dressed smartly and left for the office. I decided to carry my Bible along. It must not be far from me, henceforth.

I met Mandy in the office.

'Good morning, Mandy. You're early again'

'Yeah, good morning.' She flashed me a smile.

'You're looking good, Alex,' she commented.

'Thank you.' I wanted to tell her she was not looking bad too, but I remembered I was fasting and must not take anything to chance. 'Thank you,' I said again and moved to my office. Hardly had I settled down when Mandy came inside.

'There's something I want to tell you,' she began.

I became attentive. 'I'm all ears.'

'There's an agent I contacted for a flat. He told me the one I desired will be ready by Monday, next week. Can I just stay with you for the next few days?' She smiled warmly.

The alarm bell rang in my mind. I shook my head. 'I'm so sorry, Mandy. I cannot help you.'

She made a face. 'Oh, and I was so much banking on you.'

I shook my head again. 'See, if you can't tell madam, I can do so on your behalf. I'm sure she'll be of help.'

'Ah, please o, don't tell madam o,' she said quickly.

I could not understand her. On one hand, she said she needed
On another hand, she would not tell the person who could help her. What kind of contradiction was that?

'Okay, o, if you will not help me.' She stood up.

'Try to tell madam,' I said again. 'She's the one who can really help you.'

I shook my head again as I watched her go. No way! I would not fall for that trap, in Jesus name.
Some minutes after madam came in, I was told we would be travelling together on another business trip to Abuja the following day. I was to make flight booking and other arrangement. She however said I should not book for any hotel accommodation as there would be alternative accommodation this time.

'We'll go by the same airline we travelled with the other time,' she said further.

'Yes, ma'am.'

'You met with Steph yesterday, in an eatery,' she blurted out, studying my face..

'Yes, ma.' I was surprised she knew. Must Steph mention every move she made to her mother? I asked in my mind.

'She didn't tell me, but I know,' madam went on as if she had read my mind. I was surprised again. How did she know?

'Just be careful with her.'

I nodded dumbly.

'Alright, you can go and make the booking now.'

As I left her office, I could not but think that if indeed Steph did not tell her mother about her outing, then Madam B would most likely be a witch - for her to know those things she knew.

I did as she directed me. Wow, so I would be travelling with madam again.

Later in the afternoon, I was in Madam B's office.

'What efforts are you making to stop yourself from sleeping with Steph?' she asked. Again, I was surprised. It appeared she could now read all my mind and my plans.

'Well, I've actually started praying and fasting about it,' I confessed. 'I believe with that, I will overcome whatever temptation comes my way.'

She nodded. 'That's a good effort you're making. God will help you.'

'Amen.'

'Encourage your lady to always come around to your place,' madam suggested. 'That will discourage Steph.'

I nodded. She was quite right. 'Thank you, ma.'

About four o'clock, I decided to call Enny.

'Hello, dear. Can you make it to my place today? There're things to discuss.'

There was a long pause. 'Okay, dear.'

Yes, there were indeed, certain things I wanted to discuss with her. Not long after I spoke with Enny on the phone, Steph called.

'You did not call me since morning,' Steph said accusingly.

'I'm sorry. I've been busy.'

'So busy you could not call me?'

'I'm sorry,' I said again. 'How're you?'

'I miss you,' she cooed.

I didn't know what to say to that.

'Will you be at home by six?' she asked. 'I'll be in your place.'

'Enny is coming over,' I quickly put in. 'And it's very likely she'll be staying the night over.' I had thought that would discourage Steph from coming, but I was wrong.

'Good,' she replied. 'I'll like to meet her,'

Phew, I whistled to myself.

'Are you sure about that?'

'Of course. See you.' With that she cut off the line.

Again, I whistled to myself.

Later when I got home in the evening, I thought of how best to handle Steph. Her coming could be an opportunity for me to prove that nothing was between Steph and I, but it all depended on how Steph conducted herself. I hoped Steph would give a good, decent account of herself.

Enny arrived not long after I got to the house.

'Enny, darling, how're you?'

She answered in the positive. I told her I would be travelling with madam to Abuja the following day.

'Again?' she asked.

'Yes, but we won't be there for long. Just two or three days. There's something madam suggested which I want to discuss with you.'

Enny was all ears. 'What was that?'

'She said maybe you should move in with me.'

'Before marriage? You suggested it before and I told you it won't work.'

'We can make it work,' I posited. 'Concerning our wedding, we can do it soonest, in couple of months' time. We don't need to waste time further. Your coming to live here will be a prelude to our settling down.'

'I still think I should not move in until the proper wedding. But I agree that we can do it soonest.'
While we were still talking, a car blared its horn. I suspected it might be Steph.

'By the way, Steph said she would be coming over. She said she would like to meet with you.'

The car blared its horn again. 'Excuse me.' I left her for the gate. Truly, Steph was there. I opened the gate for her to drive in.

I greeted her and she answered warmly.

'Enny is around,' I informed. She nodded. I preceded her to the sitting-room.

I introduced the two ladies to each other. I was a little bit apprehensive but my apprehension soon dissolved into the air. Steph and Enny hit it off and I was amazed by the antics.

'I'm sure brother Alex will be a good husband,' I heard Steph say.

Brother Alex! Thank God I was finally brother Alex. I hope she would maintain that. I was very impressed with Steph's conduct. Enny asked her what she would like to take, but she declined. Some forty minutes later, Steph left.

I could see that Enny was becoming convinced that the relationship between Steph and I was just 'filial'.

Enny stayed overnight. As usual, I 'dropped' her at the bus stop on my way to work. I arrived the office and went straight to work

By eleven thirty, madam and I were driven to the airport for the mid-day flight. Once again, we traveled by first class. We arrived the federal capital by 1.00 p.m. We took one of the executive cabs to our destination.

It was a fine, white duplex located at Wuse district. I later learnt that it was owned by the Da Rochas. The area was not as urbanized as Asokoro, but it was highly urbanized too.

A uniformed security man opened the gate for us. Madam had secured the service of a housemaid who would serve us during the period we would stay. Madam paid the cab driver generously and asked him to be around the following morning by eight. It was a nice building with fine interior. There were two sitting-rooms, one downstairs, and one upstairs. The bigger one was the one downstairs. There were seven bedrooms in all in the main building, minus the boys’ quarters. The maid took madam's bags to one of the bedrooms upstairs.

I was to take the room next to the dining-room, which meant I would be downstairs. This time, I would be staying a bit far from Madam B. I welcomed the new fixture.

The maid prepared lunch of ‘semovita’ and 'ogbonno' soup and we ate. As usual, madam said she preferred fish to red meat. Thereafter, she went up to have a siesta. I remained in the sitting-room, watching movies on the television. A couple of hours later, madam came to join me. She was in casuals.

She ordered the maid to serve us fruits juice and peanuts.

I sipped my juice and munched the crunchy nuts as I watched the television.

'Can you please pause that movie for now,' madam said. 'I'll like to talk to you.'

What she wanted to say must be very important for her to say that, I thought. I paused the movie and faced her.

'I need to explain some things to you,' she said. I nodded but kept quiet.

'First, I need to tell you more about myself. I'll start with when I was a baby. I grew up not knowing my parents. I grew up in an orphanage.'

I was greatly surprised. 'Really?'

'Yes. I got affection from the foster guardians, but that could not be like from real parents. But even at ten years old, I always believed I would live in amazing luxury. In education, I was able to get OND and HND in Business Administration from Yaba Tech. By then, I had met my husband, who was just an upcoming engineer. Within five years of marriage, we started having stupendous prosperity. I have no doubt I gave him good luck.

‘But before I married, I had always believed I would have two daughters. I'm not a psychic, but I was gifted in certain knowledge.'

I remained fascinated to her story. What she was saying was amazing.

'I once had a dream - that was many years ago. In it, I set a table before my daughters. They had all sorts of assorted food on the table, more than what they could finish. They were really enjoying themselves. Then, I saw a boy passing by holding just some biscuits. I asked the boy if he would like real food, and he said yes. I then invited him to join my daughters at the table, and he gladly did so. Within me, I was happy to assist that boy. In that dream, my mind kept saying treat him like your son. I then woke up. Alex, you're that boy.'

I opened my mouth in wonder. 'Me?'

She smiled kindly. 'Yes. Ever since the first day I set my eyes on you in the church, the dream came all over and my mind said this is the boy in that dream.'

I was too stunned to say anything.

'You can now understand why I treat you the way I’ve been treating you. You're like my son.'

I became so emotional I didn't know when tears dropped from my eyes.

'I thought I should let know this, so that you'll know where I stand.

I nodded. 'I'm glad ma, by your goodness and kindness.'

She nodded too. 'I will always wish you the best in everything.'

'Thank you , ma. I'm grateful, ma.'

She stood and spread her hands. It was an invitation for an embrace. I moved to her and hugged her. I felt so loved and so happy. It was the warmest and the most emotional hug I ever had.

'Thank you, ma,' I said after disengaging. 'I really thank you for counting me worthy. Thank you, mum.’

'It's alright, Alex.'

'So, tell me,' she said. 'When are you and Enny planning to do your wedding?'

I smiled warmly. 'We're thinking of before the end of this year, ma. Definitely, in the next one week or so, we will come up with the exact day.'

She nodded. 'The earlier, the better. I'm sure the moment you guys announce when it will be and go on to print the invitation card, Steph will mellow down.'

I stopped my smile. What did madam just say? 'Steph?'

'Yes, Steph. I know that what’s going on between you and her is the result of the crush she has for you. I think I can understand that. But that relationship will not stand. It must be severed now. She'll get over it.'

I sighed. 'I'm now careful with her, ma.'

'Good. Let me know the moment you fix your wedding date.'

I thanked her profusely for her caring.

We continued on different gist until the maid came to ask what madam would like to eat for supper.
'Alex, tell her what you want. As for me, I don't need anything today again.'

I requested for white rice and fried plantain. Madam and I continued to chat until late in the night when she excused herself and went to her bedroom upstairs. Not long thereafter, Steph called my line.

'Did you miss me, dear?' she asked.

'I miss everybody over there,' I replied carefully.

'I'm not talking about everybody. I ask, do you miss me?'

I sighed. 'Yes, Steph.'

She laughed. 'I miss you too. I really miss you.'

'But, we'll soon come back to Lagos,' I assured.

'I know. Can't wait to see you, dear.'

'How's Sophia?' I asked, trying to change the topic.

'She's fine. I just called mummy now. She said you told her that you and your lady would soon do your wedding.'

I was surprised she already knew. 'Yes,' I affirmed. 'We'll soon be tying the nuptial knot.'

There was a short pause. 'I'll not do that if I were you,' she said.

I thought I did not hear her well. 'Excuse me?'

'I will advise that you don't marry her,' she blurted out.

I was taken aback. 'Why did you say that, Steph.'

'See, I'm trying to advise you as a sister. Don't marry her.'

'But why? Why did you say so?'

'My spirit does not agree with hers.'

'Oh, oh.' Now, I felt like laughing. When did Steph start talking about 'spirit'? When did she become spiritual?

'Look, Steph, it's because you're yet to really know Enny. She's a good lady. She's loving and caring. But wait a minute, didn't the two of you get along fine the other time you met? I remember you told her I will make a good husband to her. Why the sharp change of opinion now?'

'Yeah, so it appeared to be. That was then. I only said that. Now, Alex, in your interest, don't marry her.'

Now, I was getting exasperated. 'Steph, you hardly know Enny. If you really know her, you won't be saying this.'

'It’s not about not about knowing her for long or not. I know what I'm saying, Alex.'

I had no doubt I was exasperated now. 'Anyway, let's forget that matter. Let's talk about other things.'

'I thought this matter is very important to you.'

'Of course, it is, but this one you've suddenly become a prophetess of doom, I don't understand.'

There was another pause. 'Do you really want to know why you should not marry her?' she asked.

'Yes, tell me. I've asked that before.'

'It's because she won't last as your wife.'

'What!' I was befuddled. 'Steph, how could you be talking like this?'

'I mean it, Alex.'

'No, I can't believe it. Perish that thought.' I realized I had started having a headache. 'Don’t say such terrible things again. Now, if you don't mind, I'll like to go to bed right away, Steph.'

There was a moment of pause. 'Okay. Good night.'

'Good night.' I said and cut the connection.

I realized the headache was real. Gosh! Trying to make my mind blank and devoid of any serious thinking, I went to bed. It was the following morning when I was taking my bath that I remembered what Steph had said about Enny.

Why must she say that? What was the meaning of saying she would not last? I suddenly had some fears. What was Steph up to? Anyway, I decided that when I got back to Lagos, I would demand that she should explain herself.
