I agree that this behaviors are absurd but you could ask why did Germans follow Hitler to commit all the atrocities he committed during war 2, why did, why did Charles Taylor win election with the slogan "I kill your mama, I kill your papa, vote for me" and why do people follow "Pol Pot" with the number of people he killed.
In my view, is down to how the human psychology is easily manipulated with propaganda and fear, irrespective of what skin color the people are. In America for instance, so many people oppose single payer health care system that will bring free health care to everyone in the country because the healthcare insurances companies that profit too much from it feeds them good propaganda, despite the fact that it workers well is cheaper for everyone as applied in other countries like Canada, UK, Australia, etc.
