The managing director of Shell Petroleum Development Company, Mr Osagie Okunbor, and two others have been sentenced to three months in prison with hard labour by a Port Harcourt High Court. Others also sentenced to three months in prison with hard labour in contempt proceedings were Shell’s secretary and head of legal, Nike Oyinlola and the deputy country head of legal/managing counsel global litigation sub-Sahara Africa, Keibi Atemie. The presiding judge, George Omeriji, has directed the Nigerian Police Force and other law enforcement to effect immediate arrest of the aforementioned Shell officials who were absent in court and send them to prison. I am impressed. With Judges like this, not intimidated by the BIG MEN of our Society, there is hope for Nigeria. George Omeriji you have done well. This will be a lesson to other big men that are fond of shunning invitations from Courts. |

HungerBAD:But you and i know he won't enter that prison ![]() Though the judge should still be commended for handing down the sentence. It'll be on record until it's appealed ![]() |

Could this have happened under a PDP led government? In that era of money must change hands judiciary, I am very very sure that this judgement would have never seen the light of day. Corruption must die in Nigeria and the party that turned it to a religion must die with it as well |

Shuku0kukobambi:True my brother you have a point. But this sentence can force the HQ of Shell( I believe it is in the Netherlands) to make Management changes, since those at the top echelon are not obeying court orders in Nigeria. Oyinbo people do not like their companies to be in the news for the wrong reasons. So it is still a win for the Judge. Check back in a couple of months, and you will see those mentioned by the Court have resigned. |

HungerBAD:Very true. A company of Shell's standing doesn't like bad publicity. Not even after their involvement in the Ogoni and Saro Wiwa saga. That case is still haunting them today |

So they feel they're too big to obey the court summon. Let's hope the Nigerian police will carry out the court order because, we know the law is kind of slow when people with money and influence are on the wrong side of it. |
