The rest of the day was eventful as madam and I visited some ministries and held some business meetings. The following two days witnessed similar routine, but on the third day, we inspected a housing estate madam was constructing at Kubwa, a suburb of Abuja.

The morning of the fourth day, we returned to Lagos. After the last call of Steph three days ago, I had not heard from her and I refused to give her a call. Whatever I wanted to discuss with her would wait until I saw her physically.

The flight to Lagos was slightly delayed. While waiting for the takeoff, I thought over my experience during the trip and felt fulfilled.

On getting to Lagos, madam told me to take the day off. I went to my apartment and rested on the sofa. There was something I could not get off my mind - what Steph said. What kind of statement is that? I was still thinking about it when Enny called.

'How're you, darling?' she greeted.

'I'm fine. How about you?'

'Like I've been saying, I miss you.'

'Well, I'm back now.'

'How was the flight?'

'After the initial hitches, everything went smooth.'

'That's good. I'll be in your place after closing from work.'

'Alright, see you.'

About five in the evening, I was having a nap on the sofa when Enny came. I hugged her and gave her a peck.

'You're looking fresh,' she said. 'This Abuja trip is really doing you good.'

'You think so? Then, I thank God.'

She sat by my side and I wrapped my right hand round her shoulder.

'I've discussed the marriage issue with my parents and they said we should pick our dates for the introduction, engagement and wedding.'

I was glad to hear that. I had decided that nothing would stop me from marrying my darling Enny. We picked dates for social engagements. The introduction would be done in three weeks' time, while the wedding would come up six weeks after introduction. That meant in nine weeks' time
Enny would be my wedded wife. I was gladdened by the prospects.

I informed Madam B the following day about the dates.

'That's great, Alex. Congratulations in advance.'

'Thank you, ma'am.' I decided to also inform Mandy about it, but I was quick to sense her cool reception.

At the close of work, I was driving home when Steph's call came in.

'I'm on my way to your house to see you,' she informed.

I sighed. 'Okay.'

While I could not stop her from coming over to my place, I could at least gird my loins and restrain myself from being carried away by passionate overtures. I would have to be very careful with Steph, I told myself. Hardly had I entered the flat when she came. She gave me a warm smile which I tried to reciprocate.

'What can I get you?' I asked.

She shrugged. 'Anything.'

I went to the kitchen to get a packet of fruit juice and cookies. With two glasses, I returned to the sitting-room. 'Help yourself,' I told her.

I went to the bedroom to change to casuals. By the time I got back to the sitting-room, she had poured the drinks inside the glasses and was sipping from her glass. I picked up my drinks and sat opposite her.

'Mummy said you've picked a date for your wedding,' she started.

I sipped from my glass cup and nodded. 'Yes.'

She looked at me curiously. 'Do you really love her?'

I paused as if trying to weigh her question. 'Yes, I really do.'

'So, why are you endangering her life?'

The cold juice became hot in my mouth. I put the glass down. 'What are you talking about, Steph?'

'She won't last with you. No other woman will last with you.'

I shook my head in astonishment. 'Honestly, Steph, it's very difficult to not to believe - sometimes - that you say things that are absurd.'

She gave a short laugh and stared at me so hard that I had to look away.

'But why're you talking like that?' I asked in exasperation.

'I'm only telling you the truth,' she said.

'What truth? What you're saying doesn't make sense.'

'It does. You can't marry any other lady.'

I was getting angry, but I tried to control myself. 'Give me one reason why I can't marry her. You said this same thing on the phone when I was in Abuja. So, go ahead, what's your reason?'

There was a long pause. She sighed. 'It's because you're mine and no other woman can have you.'

I stared at her. 'Steph, tell me you're joking.'

She shook her head emphatically. 'It's no joke, Alex. You belong to me and I belong to you. We've been joined together in the spirit as husband and wife.'

I opened my mouth in bewilderment. 'Steph, are you okay?'

'Of course, I'm okay.'

'No, I don't think you are. You're saying nonsense.'

'It's because you don't understand. You're mine. You and I should be the one talking about wedding, as it is. We can travel to the U.S together and get married there. I'll be a good wife, Alex. I promise.'

'Oh, my God, you’re going crazy.' I stood up. I could see that she looked very serious and all I could say was that she was becoming crazy; and

I too was becoming crazy to be listening to her.

I started pacing round the room. What should I do?

'Why don't you sit down, Alex?'

I stopped pacing and looked at her. She smiled up at me.

'I lost my virginity to you, Alex, remember? I told them whoever deflowered me will be my husband. So, you're mine.'

'You told who?’ I was shocked again.

‘You won’t understand, now. You’ll understand later.’

‘All this is crazy. Steph, please stop saying crazy things. Right now, I think I'm going batty hearing all these from you.'

I went back to my seat. 'See, Steph, I'm sorry I did that to you, but I didn't rape you. It was consensual, but let me still apologize for being
carried away. Now, let me be a brother to you,'

'You're not my brother, and you'll never be, Alex.'

'Let me be, at least symbolically.'

'Ah, na by force? I want you, but not as a brother. I love you, Alex.'

I shook my head. 'Oh God, Oh God.' I didn't know what else to say.

Just then, there was a soft rap at the sitting-room door. It opened to reveal Enny. I was surprised since I wasn't expecting her.

'Hello, dear. Hi, Steph.'

Steph stood up and smiled at her.

'Sister Enny, welcome.' She went on to give Enny a peck.
This Steph was a good actress.

'I was just on my way. Since brother Alex came back from

Abuja trip, I've not seen him, so I decided to come say hello.'

With Enny around, I could not accompany Steph. I tried to converse with Enny in a lively way through out her stay with me, but deep down in my mind, I kept thinking about Steph and all that she had said.

Later, I decided to ignore her foreboding. Enny was the one I had promised to marry, and Enny I must marry.


The following morning, while in the office, I received a terse message from Steph that read: You are mine! I only shook my head and discarded it.

That afternoon, I received a bank transfer of 1 milliun naira into my account. It was sent by Eunice Adebimpe Da Rocha. Incredible! It must be a mistake. Madam probably wanted to send it to one of NGOs she gave donations.

I went to meet her and pointed out the error.

'It was not a mistake,' she said, smiling. 'I gave it to you to help you upset some of your wedding expenses.'

I prostrated to show my appreciation.

'Thank you so much ma. God bless you, ma'am.'

I could not believe my luck.

This Madam B was definately the most generous person I ever met. But it was a big irony that while she was urging me to marry Enny, Steph, her daughter was against it.

For two days, I didn't hear anything from Steph, and I didn' call her either. I hope she would come to terms with the fact that I had made up my mind to marry Enny and nothing would stop it.
