my advice stay on the job and work on your farm, if you decide to leave your job u would have to wait till harvest idle, and for now I am not sure you know your market that's another issue, also what if something goes wrong with the farm etc but with a job you can still secure loan to acquire more hectare n cultivate n pay back but without a job how could you do all that run both at once manage both ur job n farm properly n then if the farm is able to sustain you n your family then you can call it quit |

Benyfil: Hold on to your job while you farm. Farming like any other private venture entails risks, sometimes you lose everything you put into the venture. Find a way to juggle the two. 1 Like |

[quote author=Benyfil post=72200574] One of my reasons exactly. I wake up 5am and get home 8pm (Mon-Fri). But in my case, the job is not high paying, I run all my expenses on loan, at the end of the day, my take home pay is 39k. I spend an average of 1k per day (eating and transportation to work), thats about 22k per month. I only use my car once in a while. If I remove that from the 39k take home pay, it remains 17k (which is not even enough to care for the family talk less of saving). Been living on the edge of management and if any sudden expectation comes, I would have to seek for loan again, which continues the cycle and this is the 10th year at work. If the management decides to call it quit, that would spell trouble. My wife supports a lot, but a man got to be a man. right? All the same, thanks bro.[/white] Your last statement says it all. I'm not married yet but I have just learnt something from this thread. Kudos 1 Like |

Others have said it all...let me just add, stick to your 9-5 for now and do the other businesses on the side, when things pick up and the businesses require your undivided attention, you can leave. Don't forget you cannot throw caution to the wind since you have a family, the case would have been different if you were single. Wish you all the best. |

My friend. The reason the rich remains rich is because they have multiple sources of income. My advice will be that you continue working and using 10% out of all your remaining money for yourself, invest or save it then when its ripe to be put out you either use it to invest in your tomatoe business and learn more about your business. Seek advice from experts before you invest cash in any business. Your salary will be a backbone for now until your investments are mature enough and yielding. Then, you can think of quitting. I teach people how to start and manage online home based businesses. 0 8 1 7 9 5 9 1 8 5 6 1 Like |

Number:Z6SS8MM6 I will advice you to remain in your job while you give it a try since you don't have to be going to the farm everyday.tomato farming is not sustainable and considering the fact that you have a family.so many factors determine the price of tomato's in the market. and you can only harvest once in a year. you can't just quit your job for a business you are not certain about |

Benyfil: Don't quit your job yet. Hire(make an agreement) with a a few persons to "work" the hectare of tomato plants. Youth or Women are preferable. You could even get a group of widows supervised by your wife and split profits with them. (they should also be involved in marketing and sales) Divide your hectare into 5 areas and plan your transplants every 2 weeks into 1 of the 5 areas. This ensures year round harvesting. Your profits will soar in times of scarcity. Ensure to create a sales plan that will involve supply of fresh tomatoes to homes, hotels, small grocer/supermarkets Etc. You can even open a tomato shop in the market. Cutting away all the middle-men in the supply chain leaves you with a higher than usual margin. That said, YOU PERSONALLY have to draw a simple management plan and work schedule for your workers/partners. I hope you can ensure year round water supply. I hope the farm is close to a densely populated area. Create cash flow. Have dedication and QUIT YOUR JOB in a year or two. 2 Likes |

Benyfil: Truth is bitter bro, I left the farm few years ago for paid employment. I don't regret the decision now, although it was difficult. For farming to work you need knowledge plus lots of money and money and money. I would be going back to the farm soon on a part time arrangement very soon. It might be laughable if you are a first time farmer and trying to do 1 hectare of tomatoes at once. Bro, Tomato is very delicate ohhhhh. You should be ready for the unexpected. Have a back up plan for feeding your family for 2 yrs. Advice on the farm 1. Ensure you plant improved seed variety. 2. Having water near by is good, but how do you supply the water to the plant. 3. Think deeply about your irrigation. (i suggest you purchase drip tapes, forget the noise about rain guns ohhhhh) 4. Eagle eye always (ensure you observe any change quickly and seek advice) 5. What is your weeding plan (that labour cost can kill you, mulching films could be a good investment) However, I would advise that you keep your job and do a pilot farm of one plot. The outcome of that farm would answer all your questions. It would take just 3 months for you to know your fate. 1 Like |

frehage: A lot of people send me such messages daily (even today) and I usually have one reply for all of them: KNOWLEDGE COSTS MONEY TO ACQUIRE. You can get information in two ways. a) You can PAY MONEY to someone to provide you with the information or knowledge you seek. b) You can INVEST MONEY into your own mission by spending time on the internet to search for the answers you seek. Both routes cost money. Personally, I have since stopped providing information because it was grossly abused when I first did it (and for FREE too). So I usually ask people to invest in their own mission by spending time and money in their own mission. I know someone who went from a complete novice (read a social science course in university) to becoming a programmer within one year of YouTube tutorials, spending minimum of 50GB data monthly on downloaded video tutorials. Last I heard, he rakes in close to $5,000 a month. So it is a choice of being spoonfed, or you actively buy scrap metal, spend time and effort to carve out your own spoon and feed yourself. I chose to carve my own spoon and today, I am neither moved by minimum wage or recession or any of Nigeria's economic problems. 5 Likes 1 Share |

frehage:Passion is Key... But let him first look into his current financial responsibilities. Because, starting any business may bring a momentary financial struggle before finally balancing up. The best is to have one's own business. So start as an entrepreneur whether there's available enough capital to start or not. |
