UNILORIN Increases Tuition Fee By More Than 100%’ by InoutNaija(f): 5:11pm On Nov 03, 2018
The University of Ilorin has increased its tuition fee by over 100 per cent, students and a university official confirmed, Naija News Understands

The students union president, Seyi Animasaun, first confirmed this increment in one interview said:

“What we have woken up to is rather unexpected, shocking and challenging. This cannot stand. I have called emergency meeting with all SU executives and all Faculty presidents and we shall release a comprehensive report after,” he said. When he was asked of the amount added to the tuition, he said it “varies across different faculties”.

It was also gathered that the tuition for the department of Mass Communication for instance was increased from N10,700 to N23,300.

Inoutnaija understands that the increment will take effect from 2018/2019 academic session.

Confirming an increment, the institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, also said that the increment is ‘marginal’. He was however contradictory in his response.

“It is not an increment. Do you have the fees of other Federal Universities? Even with the increment, we are far ‘better’ than other universities.

“The increment is just marginal with the current economy reality and we are still below other universities,” he said.

Meanwhile, students have stormed the social media to demand a reversal.

As someone who knows how that University operates, nothing will happen.......
It looks very insensitive, but we are in Nigeria and like I have always said, the biggest corruption today is in Government Universities....if they are probed, they will make our Legislathieves and Executhieves look like saints...
I pity the students....God help their guardians

If govt can release over 250k as subsidy per student why can't the students cough out 60-70k on their own part to get education?
Lots of graduates are just going to school to get certificate and don't pay emphasis on the skill it affords them to acquire.
If you value the education you would even do manual labour to save N200k as buffer to help see you through school and enjoy millions in subsidy.

The increment came at the wrong time

The labour congress are still battling with the govt on minimum wage issue, all of a sudden unilorin increased their school charges by 100percent.

Naija which way

Thank you. Nigerians don't realize the universities are dealing with over 5 times the student population of 25 years ago with almost same resources. They think education is cheap because govt subsidizes it.

Minimum wages across the world don't determine university education cost. Govt dont create wealth but circulate what is gathered and there must be balance.

As long as the economy helps them own big phones and drink beer it should be good enough for making 70k. People take loans in developed countries.

you are ignorant of what you are saying here, I'm saying that it is bad cos' the less privilege ones that gained admission to the school will find it difficult to pay the school fees.

Oga the less privileged card you are playing here amount to blackmail of govt. Let all less privileged ones take loans and repay it when the graduate. Or they should work and save for it. Govt can't increase funding infinitely.

The fees is still cheap compare to other federal universities that had increased theirs. To avoid this drama, fellow Nigerians vote for presidential aspirant that value education. A person passionate about human capital development. Buhari or Atiku are after fame

I know not all are careless but the majority are like that. Developed nations provide loans for the serious minded ones.

Are you serious, so you wasted my data because of an increase from 11,000 - 23,000. Like are you guys freaking serious? The majority of you guys use phones worth way more. Your cummulative data in a year is probably worth more.

Don't give us that "Nigerians are poor crap". If you take an holiday job you would definitely be able to afford a part of it and then you can complement it with your parents give to you. Nobody should come here to complain about school fees not exceeding 30,000 naira.

Instead of you to celebrate your university, asking them how they manage to keep the school running with such low fees you are here rambling.

It seems you don't know it would take the current annual school fees of 70 unilorin students to pay one professor's monthly salary. And 840 students annual school fees to pay one professors annual salary...

Inasmuch as we don't want govt to leave the poor behind, pls do not be ridiculous. Any school fee lesser than 30,000 is fair on the part of govt and the university.

The fees are actually low compared with what's obtainable in some other federal universities.

However an outright 100% increment seems insensitive especially when stakeholders aren't carried along.
