A former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola, says over 60 percent of project reports of Nigerian undergraduates are plagiarised.

Speaking yesterday at the first Kwara State University Education Lecture, Okebukola said the rate of plagiarism as a form of academic corruption at the Masters level was between 15 and 20 percent and eight percent at the PhD level.

“It’s academic corruption when lecturers don’t show up in classes as required or teach only 10 subjects out of about 20 in a semester, and when students negotiate with lecturers for marks”, he said.

Okebukola said that solving problems in the education sector might be challenging, but not impossible.

“Government must place high premium on education by providing adequate financial resources for the sector. Our institutions of learning must also look for innovative ways to raise funds. The teaching profession must be considered as one of the most important jobs and accorded due regard. The Minister of Education must appeal to state governors to give special emphasis to addressing the problem of low quality of basic education. Also, there is the need for an enabling environment to be created for teachers and students through improved conditions of service, provision of basic infrastructures for the delivery of quality education.

He said Nigerian universities were grossly under resourced in human and physical resources, calling for adequate funding of public educational institutions in the country.

Okebukola also appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to embrace dialogue in resolving the ongoing strike.

Why would anyone waste all his time writing a project for a useless degree that guarantees you nothing on the outside. Gone are the days when undergraduate projects receive funding for implementation or are used for relevant external projects. Why pesin no go plagiarize na

I agree. Too often have I seen students copying the hard work of others. The truth is that it is quite simple to identify a student who has plagiarised another person's work. Ask them simple questions about the work and they will falter. Many are not even intelligent enough to rework what they've plagiarised. They can copy everything, including the matric number of the person they plagiarised.

99%

They just buy former project reports and retype, add their name and matric number and boom they submit to their dull supervisors and pay for approval, boom, project is done, next is to start pouring themselves dirty water and shouting I AM A GRADUATE, OLUWA THANK YOU!

Even while committing crime and doing the wrong thing Nigerians will keep screaming God and using religion to deceive themselves, its a pity angry

With all these cycle of doom repeating in Nigeria, we are heading nowhere!

So true, I remember that time, you will just go to the department and find one past project dropped on the ground anyhow, and modify the topics, and just do copy and paste for your supervisor.

No be school we dey go for Nigeria, God should just shower his mercy and guidance on this nation, so that things will get improved and change for the better if not the best.

Treat the cause: saying it does not change anything

Lecturers:-
- Low salaries.
- Multiple jobs.
- lack of dedication. (Only job available)
- lack of career growth.
- lack of govt palliatives to reduce financial burden.

Students:-
- poverty
- lack of guidance counselling (career paths)
- fear of failure with no alternative
- lack of dedication in education

Institution:-
- lack of project documents control & sanctions on corruption.
- lack of honour for great efforts (10k to best student)

60 percent is small for undergraduate. It is more like 95%. He is being very nice to masters thesis. About 70% of master's thesis are pure copy and paste.

Most schools do not have time to check for ppagiarism except a few like UNN where there is subscription to a plagiarism checker

It is all wash!
