Students plagiarized it because most of the project topics in Nigeria are just useless.
No, they plagiarized because their supervisors and Heads of Department do not screen their work properly. Haven't you wonder why the plagiarism rate at postgraduate is between 8 to 20% ?
Re: ‘60% Of Nigerian Undergraduate Projects Plagiarised’ by Ufedolove: 8:49am On Nov 09, 2018
But those projects whether plagiarized or not, will they not end in the waste bin later? I wish I was in school at the moment, I would have loved to take a shot of the bin where project works are stored to later burn.

Seeing this myself how efforts are being wasted, I would rather not stress myself doing one yeye project.
Nonsense and ingredient

I agree. Too often have I seen students copying the hard work of others. The truth is that it is quite simple to identify a student who has plagiarised another person's work. Ask them simple questions about the work and they will falter. Many are not even intelligent enough to rework what they've plagiarised. They can copy everything, including the matric number of the person they plagiarised.

Why don't they use plagiarism detector for such students?

So true, I remember that time, you will just go to the department and find one past project dropped on the ground anyhow, and modify the topics, and just do copy and paste for your supervisor.

No be school we dey go for Nigeria, God should just shower his mercy and guidance on this nation, so that things will get improved and change for the better if not the best.
God will not come down to help us except we help ourselves.

More like 90%.

And up to 60% of Nigerian lecturers' research papers are plagiarised too.

You are correct but those figures are unreliable

thats the bitter truth and most lecturers doesn't encourage originality. I remember when i was in COED i decided to write a project that will be originaly mine but when i finish i end up getting b and those that copy directly from past students projects got an A i dnt regret my action tho
Don't regret your action because should you proceed your degree further, you see the fruit of your labour

Many schools have done this already but mainly at the postgraduate level. The truth is that Nigerian universities do not consider undergraduate projects as "serious" research and that's why they overlook some of these things. This attitude has to change first before we address the problems.

Treat the cause: saying it does not change anything

Lecturers:-
- Low salaries.
- Multiple jobs.
- lack of dedication. (Only job available)
- lack of career growth.
- lack of govt palliatives to reduce financial burden.

Students:-
- poverty
- lack of guidance counselling (career paths)
- fear of failure with no alternative
- lack of dedication in education

Institution:-
- lack of project documents control & sanctions on corruption.
- lack of honour for great efforts (10k to best student)
Add to it, most projects are not stored on the internet couple with the fact that it is rare to run plagiarism test for undergraduate projects

Nigerian graduates that have never heard of turnitin will say foreign graduates have it easy academically. 60% seems very low BTW and reckon the true percentage is in the 90s bar foreign Nigerian universities and some private universities.

people know how to work turnitin- besides it only shows similarities and lecturers start to worry should the similarity report become too high - in most cases, students will just reference anyways and that kind of covers their back! well until that software that would really catch students doing all sorts is released, turnutin only is a tool to help lecturers prevent plagiarism

well, you tell me - if you think I was taking a swipe at you - sorry bro, I'm only trying to reiterate that turnitin exists however it doesn't really detect plagiarism but assist lecturers when the markers go haywire - and what it does is it checks texts against database to see where papers have been submitted or published

So sad!

It is to save students from such academic embarrassment that we assembled a team of professionals to specifically offer academic assistance to students. Nigerians are hardworking but the system is making it exceedingly difficult for students to stay on a par with their international counterparts.

60 percent is small for undergraduate. It is more like 95%. He is being very nice to masters thesis. About 70% of master's thesis are pure copy and paste.

Most schools do not have time to check for ppagiarism except a few like UNN where there is subscription to a plagiarism checker

It is all wash!
subscription to plagiarism checker? how possible?

zakim:
A former executive secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola, says over 60 percent of project reports of Nigerian undergraduates are plagiarised.

Speaking yesterday at the first Kwara State University Education Lecture, Okebukola said the rate of plagiarism as a form of academic corruption at the Masters level was between 15 and 20 percent and eight percent at the PhD level.

“It’s academic corruption when lecturers don’t show up in classes as required or teach only 10 subjects out of about 20 in a semester, and when students negotiate with lecturers for marks”, he said.

Okebukola said that solving problems in the education sector might be challenging, but not impossible.

“Government must place high premium on education by providing adequate financial resources for the sector. Our institutions of learning must also look for innovative ways to raise funds. The teaching profession must be considered as one of the most important jobs and accorded due regard. The Minister of Education must appeal to state governors to give special emphasis to addressing the problem of low quality of basic education. Also, there is the need for an enabling environment to be created for teachers and students through improved conditions of service, provision of basic infrastructures for the delivery of quality education.

He said Nigerian universities were grossly under resourced in human and physical resources, calling for adequate funding of public educational institutions in the country.

Okebukola also appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to embrace dialogue in resolving the ongoing strike.

I think all universities should adopt anti plagiarism softwares to checkmate this.

Re: ‘60% Of Nigerian Undergraduate Projects Plagiarised’ by panini(m): 6:24pm On Nov 09, 2018
The first thing is to look inwards. Is it really the lectures fault? The university's?

A student who knows the value of his education will try his best in all areas, regardless of what the economy looks like our what the school will do with the project.

I blame our lack of honour and moral standards. I've met an OND graduate boasting of getting her project at a cybercafe. The document, the binding, everything... She didn't read it herself to date. I met another who told me of the way he cheated the plagiarism checkers. No remorse.

Isn't it funny that employers ask candidates about their project? Well, it's not. Would you trust your investment to a cheat?

I personally doubt if more funding into education will solve this.
