The rate at which the Nigerian youth are embracing betting as a source of income and the number of bet companies and shops that open in all corners of our streets is quite alarming.

I am afraid that if something urgent is not done to curb the unwanted development then in no time we will have virtually all the young people walking around with white long betting tickets.

I am fully aware that even the old are involved in this but I am more disturbed when I see the youths engage in this act because the youth are supposed to be positioning themselves to take over the economy and leadership of this country.

But instead, they are less concerned with the happenings in the country and are most times after an easy way of making money

Due to the high level of unemployment, a majority of the unemployed even the employed has resorted to betting of all kinds just to make ends meet.

In as much as it comes with a promising and tempting return it also has its own negative impact on the person involved and with time it will have a ripple effect on society.

The Effects of Online Betting On Nigerian Youths

#1 Debt and Financial Embarrassment

Majority of the people who engage in betting are mostly a form of debt or another. They go to the extent of borrowing or even using monies that were entrusted to them to place a bet with the hope of winning and then paying them back after they must have made some profit.

I know someone who used the huge loan he collected for a project to place a bet with the hope of winning but unfortunately the whole funds went down the drain.

#2 Frustration, Anger and Suicidal

When you come in contact with those who have lost a bet it is always red with frustration and laced with intense anger. Over time these may degenerate to depression and if care is not take the person may consider suicide as an option.

#3 Laziness and Poverty

Generally, once you start engaging yourself in betting your mentality and attitude towards hard work will drop drastically.

This is because you will begin to feel that you can make a lot of money just with little effort.

You begin to believe that someday you will become a millionaire by just a single winning. This will ultimately lead you into perpetual poverty.

#4 Conflicts in Relationships and Lack of Vision

Definitely, I don’t think any person would want to associate with someone that is obsessed with betting.

It destroys one's relationship with friends, and even family as the person will mostly isolate himself from other people especially when they are being rebuked.

The person will lack vision, and can barely focus or concentrate on work or anything.

Finally the earlier we realize the damage betting is doing on us as a Nation the better because it may get to a time that the effects would have become so bad that a fix might be nearly impossible.

SAY NO TO BETTING TODAY.

Don't worry yourself. In America and other advanced countries bet is part of their life.

So why worry? All for God

Thank God gambling is not part of my bad habit

Gambling is addictive.
Gambling makes one to be lazy intellectually ( waiting for free money)
Gambling makes one to be aggressive unnecessarily(e.g if 12 out of the 15 games you selected already came through, the remaining minutes /hours for the remaining 3 matches always makes one to be so anxious and aggressive.

Some people resorted to betting as a 2nd source of source of income. OP made some vital here so it's a thing of mind and up to you to decide doing right from wrong. There is no difference between the online betting and polling the olden method (Chacha)

I do agree with the effect of betting.

An idle hands is a flexible hands both for something productive or evil. I would rather they take to betting to engage themselves & to an extent create hopes for themselves than to take to guns. The country has created hopelessness & totally excluded the youth.

That feeling you get when hold a ticket worth of 700k is second to none. It will just get your mind settled, at least before it cut.

Honestly, this is Buhari's major achievement. Unemployment, lack of hope, frustration and many more he had inflicted on Nigerians caused it all.

Have you noticed betting shops is outnumbering redeem Church in most streets.

Anybody but BUHARI

Even the bible warns against betting or gambling. In Isaiah 65:11, the scripture says: "But you are among those forsaking Jehovah,Those forgetting my holy mountain,Those setting a table for the god of Good Luck,And those filling up cups of mixed wine for the god of Destiny"

When the economy is harsh and corruption at the top, the average guy on the street needs a job and can't get one or source for capital to be self employed, all these factors are ingredients which makes betting inevitable.

Your parents are first responsible for you not the government. Greed and laziness of life makes you use your productive time and life to bet not hash economy.

It has become a menace in our society and the situation is same everywhere in this country.

I share same sentiments as the op btw but it's better they are hopeful on something, anything, than pour out their frustration into robbery and other ill vices

D number of people dat gain from betting would not more dan 2%...... D remain 98% lose in d process.

Moreover, most of d 2% go back there to spend morr dan wot they gain....

Sport betting is structured in a way dat u can use #100 to win #20,000 today and go back there everyday to lose #100 everyday for the next 1 year....

From my view.....

It is waste of time, money, energy, bring fear, anciety and takes away rest of mind

D only winner are betting site owners and agents....

It has ruin so many lifes, business....taking away youthful/productive time from youths

Note i can play it for fun but neva to b expecting gain. So u knw am against it not bcs am alfa or pastor

Good one but i expected more like solutions, alternative to what Nigeria youths can engage in.

1)in my town we no longer go to farms due to Herdsmen attack.

2)to start up a business in this country is not beans, getting a loan is difficult and really not friendly.

3)Driving a taxi ain't easy, touts will make it hell for you, extortion at every corner, roads are bad that you will end up using your profit for car repairs.

4)No power supply to encourage businesses that requires electricity like barbing saloons, pure water/cold drinks businesses, dry cleaning, etc. Patrol is 145/litre (by this time next month, it would be higher)

5)This country kills ideas.

6) There are no jobs.
They government of this country is now focused on next year's election and tackling opposition, Governors included whether APC, APGA OR PDP
Really a lot of people have tried and now fed up.

Do you know even those earning salary are betting
Things hard joor, before people are discouraged from doing certain things but now even a yahoo boy will be encouraged by elders "not to give up".
