According to Alfred Gronevelt in Mario Puzo's Last Don, sport betting should be seen as a recreation and not as a source of income. The earlier we learn of this, the better for us.

Whatever people don't understand, they condemn it.

If a system developed to ensure steady income in this (especially) soccer betting, you will hear a different argument today.

My point where it is wrong is the addiction. Guys use it as a get rich quick scheme. Which it can never be.

But there are a few that are making it steady financially (despite not with the big odds) with some good turn overs monthly in this same sports punting that many quickly condemn and many keep loosing in.

Pity.

[quote author=gisthabit post=72887967]The rate at which the Nigerian youth are embracing betting as a source of income and the number of bet companies and shops that open in all corners of our streets is quite alarming.

I am afraid that if something urgent is not done to curb the unwanted development then in no time we will have virtually all the young people walking around with white long betting tickets.

I am fully aware that even the old are involved in this but I am more disturbed when I see the youths engage in this act because the youth are supposed to be positioning themselves to take over the economy and leadership of this country.

But instead, they are less concerned with the happenings in the country and are most times after an easy way of making money

Due to the high level of unemployment, a majority of the unemployed even the employed has resorted to betting of all kinds just to make ends meet.

In as much as it comes with a promising and tempting return it also has its own negative impact on the person involved and with time it will have a ripple effect on society.

The Effects of Online Betting On Nigerian Youths

#1 Debt and Financial Embarrassment

Majority of the people who engage in betting are mostly a form of debt or another. They go to the extent of borrowing or even using monies that were entrusted to them to place a bet with the hope of winning and then paying them back after they must have made some profit.

I know someone who used the huge loan he collected for a project to place a bet with the hope of winning but unfortunately the whole funds went down the drain.

#2 Frustration, Anger and Suicidal

When you come in contact with those who have lost a bet it is always red with frustration and laced with intense anger. Over time these may degenerate to depression and if care is not take the person may consider suicide as an option.

#3 Laziness and Poverty

Generally, once you start engaging yourself in betting your mentality and attitude towards hard work will drop drastically.

This is because you will begin to feel that you can make a lot of money just with little effort.

You begin to believe that someday you will become a millionaire by just a single winning. This will ultimately lead you into perpetual poverty.

#4 Conflicts in Relationships and Lack of Vision

Definitely, I don’t think any person would want to associate with someone that is obsessed with betting.

It destroys one's relationship with friends, and even family as the person will mostly isolate himself from other people especially when they are being rebuked.

The person will lack vision, and can barely focus or concentrate on work or anything.

Finally the earlier we realize the damage betting is doing on us as a Nation the better because it may get to a time that the effects would have become so bad that a fix might be nearly impossible.

SAY NO TO BETTING TODAY.

I used to think football betting is one of the bad calamities that can ever befall someone but my mindset changed when I saw how the white stake their matches on Scorum.

Nothing is wrong with football betting.. People only play football betting out of greed in this part of the world which often lead them to financial incapacitation

Gambling is totally evil. Gambling has one thing in common with other vices: ADDICTION! It should not be shocking to anyone that bettors are usually addicted to other vices like drinking and pornography.

It kills the bettor's mind. It makes them lazy and looking for the easiest way out. They sell their valuables in hope to win. Nobody really wins except the Betting house. Some youths with decent money will rather bet than start anything at all. You want to earn without really working that is what gives birth to problems.....

To Bettors: Take hold of your life and stop betting!

Good one but i expected more like solutions, alternative to what Nigeria youths can engage in.

1)in my town we no longer go to farms due to Herdsmen attack.

3)Driving a taxi ain't easy, touts will make it hell for you, extortion at every corner, roads are bad that you will end up using your profit for car repairs.

4)No power supply to encourage businesses that requires electricity like barbing saloons, pure water/cold drinks businesses, dry cleaning, etc. Patrol is 145/litre (by this time next month, it would be higher)

5)This country kills ideas.

6) There are no jobs.
They government of this country is now focused on next year's election and tackling opposition, Governors included whether APC, APGA OR PDP

The most sensible comment on this thread so far. The things OP failed to realised about d present situation of our country which make many people, both old & young to now resort to other crimefree or criminal alternative to sustain themselves are many.

I dont even know how to play it, but i can understand d reasons why those who love it plays it. But manytimes, this is not due to LAZINESS.

D number of people dat gain from betting would not more dan 2%...... D remain 98% lose in d process.

Moreover, most of d 2% go back there to spend morr dan wot they gain....

Sport betting is structured in a way dat u can use #100 to win #20,000 today and go back there everyday to lose #100 everyday for the next 1 year....

From my view.....

It is waste of time, money, energy, bring fear, anciety and takes away rest of mind

D only winner are betting site owners and agents....

It has ruin so many lifes, business....taking away youthful/productive time from youths

Note i can play it for fun but neva to b expecting gain.

Is a cool business but you don't know.please don't use money for this kind of fun if your not expecting any gain. Those who understand the secret are smiling every week in the bank.

there have existed online betting years before now. but i knew that the moment nigerians discover it they will abuse it.
i see young guys commiting sucide in time to come if this thing is not banned. betting is not for poor people. 5 years ago, i lost 45 million naire in less than10 minutes. it all started slowly. i never ever dreamt of ever betting as much a 45m in my entire life. yes i contemplated suicide etc etc. but i got over it because i had ways of getting the cash back. the average nigerian dosnt have a means of getting money lost on gambling back. most will use peoples money to gamble and the frustration is what will push them into suicide. gambling is not for the nigerian society. i hope they ban this soon
you are overly right. Gambling is not for impecunious people, you don't stake with something meager and expect to win big.

Betting is not meant for those who place bet with their heart on it, you place bet with mind and if it come through fine and if it don't come you just forget it. More also, you only play bet with money that is of less important to you. #Gambleresponsibly
