This is not cultural. Perhaps this has been experience in his own family.
All Igbos I know have emerged worse off following the funeral of a relative, there's no profit to be made.

Are you Igbo?

If not, leave them alone to enjoy their tradition - they're not complaining. cool

But whatever it's their tradition and I respect it.

don't always allow your child to write or type for you.

cool

Exactly the same way the PDP shared the proceeds made from oil during the last administration. But thank God, most of them are now in APC and they have been washed clean by my body odour. We will never allow opposition to take over power again, so that they won't share the money we have made from agriculture and cattle rearing.

This thesis is even annoying to read. Lies from devil's hell all over.
Op, say that is what happens in funeral in your family. Not anambra, not igboland.

So their burials are for financial upliftment ? I see why some think Igbos' love for money is too great.

it is so so unfortunate. I thought it was an article written by a professor of Igbo Culture.
Not knowing it was one riff raff that doesnt have money to bury his mum.
See the whole nonsense.
Money is borrowed, properties are sold, proceeds of the funeral are sold and profit is made and shared with ratio eldest brother getting double the portion etc
Nonsense. Absolute rubbish.

I'm Igbo from Imo state, I stand bold to say that this is quite strange and not applicable to my state. Funeral is funeral, and not done for gain.
Everybody that attends a funeral eats and drinks, irrespective of whether u bring anything or not
It's quite unreasonable and foolish to attribute this to d entire Igbo land .
I once more wish to reinstate, that we don't share nothing as most people just come with drinks, hence there's nothing to share thereafter.

That's quite a detailed exposition, and it's aggressively true. Nigerian tribes (excluding the Hausas) and several other African tribes need to understand that a funeral is not a time to spend so much money and attempt to recover the money. You only spend so much if you have it. It shouldn't be a norm that whoever doesn't spend millions on a funeral hasn't put the deceased to rest. Millions that are supposed to be used to send the living to school.

That's one thing I wish we would emulate from the Americans and the British, not their accents and acceptance of LGBT. Learn that we should spend on the living and peacefully bury the dead. Funerals are meant to be solemn and calm, even if it's a "celebration of life". A time to reminisce on the life of the deceased, a time to cry and lay memories to rest, not a time to eat and dance and sow clothes and get drunk and fight over money and struggle over coolers of rice.

Please there is something called a befitting funeral for your aged loved ones and we yorubas do NOT joke with it. So if you can afford to throw a party of 10m you will now spend 500k because living. If you say people should cut their coat, that applies to EVERYTHING in this life.
