how is he right?pilots only dump fuel on emergencies, not all that payload, takeoff weight mumbo jumbo he was yapping about.
Do you know what could happen if a plane crashlands with all that fuel in it?yeah, you guessed right,we gon a see a huge fireball in the air
Do you have comprehension problem. Op clearly explained that it is only during emergencies that fuels are dumped and dumping fuels leave a white trail. He is correct, even though this is rare.

You don't land a plane that has exceeded it's maximum landing weight.

There are other reasons planes dump fuel. Op just explained one situation.

Nonsense.

It's called chemtrails, or contrails or whatever, but not fuel dumping.

Ask yourself the question. If the airline still fly even it can not determine the total weight of the passengers and their luggages before hand, why should the jet fuel be any different ?

Actually, there are three types of trails an aircraft can leave in the sky:
1. Condensation of water vapor in the exhaust gas and/or the wake
This needs the very cold, very dry air at higher altitudes between 6000m and 12000m. Water vapor in the exhaust stream condenses and, pushing the local air above its saturation water content, forms a white, frozen mist. Also, particles from partially burnt fuel form condensation cores wich stabilise the contrail and let it grow over time from humidity already present in the air. Depending on the atmospheric humidity, these contrails disappear rather quickly by sublimation or can stay in place for hours and even grow into cirrus clouds. They are called condensation trails or short "contrails".

While the added water vapor in the exhaust gas helps in contrail production, the condensation happening in the pressure field around an aircraft can already produce a contrail all by itself. If the relative humidity is close to saturation and the condensed droplets freeze quickly, the aerodynamic contrail will disappear rather slowly. The same condensation happens also at lower altitude but will not leave a contrail in temperatures above 0°C. Fog (liquid droplets) will vaporize quickly, but when frozen the condensation will last longer, until the water is re-absorbed by the air by sublimation, a much slower process than evaporation.

2. Smoke from unburnt or partially burnt fuel
This was prevalent in early jets and allowed to spot them from a distance - just follow the black line, at its tip is an aircraft. Smokeless combustor cans which allow more fuel-air mixing put an end to this.

3. Oil mist or smoke flares
The third source is shown in your picture: Oil is injected into the hot exhaust stream which forms a dense mist. This can be done with jets and piston engines, and gliders or parachutists use smoke flares. Once they are ignited (in most cases electrically) they burn down and cannot be switched off.

Smoke flares on the wingtips and fuselage of a glider (picture source)
There are many more things that can be sprayed from an aircraft (fuel, obviously, when it has to be dumped in an emergency, fertilizer or insecticides, silver iodide to seed clouds), but these are special cases.

Have you ever looked up and saw an aircraft flying with long white lines like gas behind it ? I’ve seen it many times and what the aeroplane is doing is called fuel dumping. Now you’ll be wondering why pilots will dump fuel considering the fact that aviation fuel is very expensive and also causes serious pollution to the environment. In this post techcapon be explaining to you why it is necessary for the pilots to dump fuel sometimes.

Now this also includes our local airlines in Nigeria like DANA, AERO etc. Although fuel dumping is more common with airlines that travel long distances and make international flights. Before take-off, the airline do the maths. They calculate how much fuel is needed to the aircraft to complete their journey and they fill the aircraft tanks with enough fuel to make the complete their journey. There are some terms I’ll like to explain in this post for you to understand how it works.

Dry operating weight: This is the weight of the plane without fuel, passengers or luggage.

Payload: This is the weight of the passengers and their luggage

Zero fuel weight: This is the weight of the fuel needed to reach their final destination including reserve.

Dry operating weight + Payload + Zero fuel load = Take-off weight

Take-off weight MUST always be greater than landing weight

The major reason why pilots dump fuel is because the landing weight of the plane exceeds the maximum. Inside the cockpit, pilots have a meter that tells them the weight of the aircraft at all times. For example, Boeing 747 aircrafts have a maximum landing weight of 312000kg.

Anything above that weight will cause the aircraft to suffer serious damage during landing or even crash during landing. Infact, if the maximum take-off weight is above 312000kg, the cockpit will blink red lights and give the pilots warning. The question on your mind right now will be, if the airline calculates how much fuel is needed to arrive their destination, why dump fuel before arriving ? The answer is simple.
[/s]

This is probably the most bullsh!t nonsense I have read on NL.

The picture is of condensation trails and not fuel dumping.

Not every trail with smoke-like appearance behind a plane is a plane dumping fuel. Fuel dumping rarely even occurs cos it ends up as a great loss to airline operators. It only happens during emergencies. Some are done even for entertainment displays.

Contrails, or condensation trails, are "streaks of condensed water vapor created in the air by an airplane or rocket at high altitudes." Fossil fuel combustion (as in piston and jet engines) produces carbon dioxide and water vapor. At high altitudes the air is very cold.

The OP is not TOTALLY wrong. In as much as condensation trail (contrail) is the major explanation to this phenomenon, fuel dumping creates the same effect too. His explanation about fuel dumping is correct but fuel dumping is NOT the major reason for the formation of those white trails in planes, CONTRAIL is.

EMERGENCY

For example, a plane that’s suppose to fly from Lagos to New York city loads enough fuel to reach their destination. Everything is going fine then suddenly a pregnant woman who is on board goes into labor. If there’s no nurse on board and the flight attendants cannot handle the issue, the only choice will be to make an emergency landing.

The flight crew will alert the pilots on the situation and the pilots will have to land in the nearest airport. The first thing the pilots will check is the weight of the aircraft. For an aircraft that has enough fuel to reach New York, of course the landing weight will be far above normal. In this scenario, the pilot must dump enough fuel in order to reduce the weight of the aircraft before landing.

The pilots have no choice. There are 3 things that add weight to an aircraft. Passengers, luggage and fuel. Obviously the pilots cannot dump passengers. Neither can they dump cargo (except in very rare cases), the only option is to dump fuel.

The pilot will dump the fuel, make the emergency landing in order to get the pregnant woman to the hospital, refuel before they can continue the journey. Of course dumping fuel is a big loss to the airline companies. They lose big money anytime these things occur but it’s better to dump fuel than land an overweight aircraft thereby damaging the aircraft or jeopardizing the lives of everyone on board.

But op,I once read somewhere that those white smoke like lines that trails aircraft are called CONTRAIL,I can't remember exactly how the phenomenon was explained but are you saying CONTRAIL is as a result of fuel dumping or they are different phenomenon with similar results?.

You can be right in some way, because this only happen with big airplanes at high altitude, at high speed, what the hope wrote is wrong,
The white line that we see from our houses, or in fact not just from houses, but the anywhere on the ground, are not from a rocket, but from a commercial jet aircraft. These may be:

Contrails (Condensation Trails), and
Wing tip vortices
Read on to know the simple details of what they actually are.

1. Contrails: The aircraft that we see in the sky leaving that white line are in most cases, flying at an altitude of more than 25,000 feet. The atmospheric temperature drops as we go higher (The same reason that tall mountains are freezing). It is, on average, is -35 deg Celsius. Just imagine, what will happen if you put a glass of water in your refrigerator ehich has a temperature of -0.18 deg Celsius. The aircraft engines produce exhaust by burning hydrocarbon fuel (High grade kerosene) . All such fuels on burning, produce water vapours too. On getting exposed to such freezing temperatures, the hot vapours cool down and condense into water droplets or may be into ice crystals sometimes, creating thw white line

2. Wing Tip Vortices: These are more of a physics thing. The very reason that the aircraft flies is responsible for these tip vortices (Singular: Vortex). The reason is lift. The wings of aircraft are subject to lower pressure on the upper surface, and high pressure on the lower surface. This causes the air from the bottom surface to leak to upper part from the end part of the wing called the wing tip. This air lelakage creates a circular cyclone like structure called a vortex (The one you might have made in a bucket using your hand by moving the water in circular fashion). These also cause resistance to aircraft forward movement and is a cause of induced drag. The pressure due to the speed of the wind in this circular structure drops to a very low level, reducing the effective dew point of that region. This causes the air, which contains water vapours, to liquify or freeze, making them visible as white lines. They may not be visible everytime, but only in favourable conditions. However, they are always present. They can be reduced by using verticle smaller wings at the tip of the wing called winglets.

I finished ground school even if I don't have my private pilot license (PPL)yet
Op don't know where you get the wrong information
