Hello everyone, please I need a Canadian address that my ICES evaluation mail can be delivered to as I'm super desperate to save 75CAD cost of sending to Nigeria. Any good Samaritan should mention me. Thanks

Winter gears from Russia, preferably the one designed for Moscow will be well sufficient for Canada's temperature.. They are winter brothers like that!
Yes. Winter gears from Northern US states would be fine too. They gets lots of snow and cold in places like North Dakota, Michigan and Minnesota.

Jackets, I agree as your UK winter jacket will probably be a Fall/Spring one here. However, in my opinion, M&S cotton blend thermals are warmer and more comfortable than any I have seen here.
You are right. My thermal or longjorns worked just fine, but the jacket was very light compared to what was obtainable here. It was more appropriate for spring or fall weather which one can manage with just a wind breaker or sweater.

I had this exact issue. I booked my dirt cheap egypt air flight to Toronto, 2 weeks before landing i decided to settle in Calgary. I just booked a local flight from yyz to yyc with westjet.
Local flights are a bit expensive plus you have to pay for your checked in luggage. I missed my westjet flight due to landing formalities and was put on thr next available one FOC. It's no biggie really as long as you aren't PNP you can settle anywhere.

Guitarlife:

Thanks I just got back from wakanow office. It isnt looking good. I was told egypt air does not fly to Calgary.
The best option is to land in Toronto and hitch a flight to Calgary after landing formalties have been concluded.

How many hours is it likely to take for landing formalties in Toronto if I land at 7am on a working day ?

I need to have the right estimation to enable me leave the right time interval before the flight from Toronto to Calgary.

Congrats oh!!

We are waiting for your landing gist please. At least for us still in naija

Hmm....okay, Landing gist.
Came into Canada from Australia. Had till 20th November to make my landing even though I got COPR ending October, because my Medicals was done same time last year.

Was expecting stringent checks and all, but the only real check I experienced was at Sydney Airport. I was the only black guy around, I was made to go through secondary checks, then told to take off my shoes ( the only person to) and go through the checks again. ( in my mind was, anything to get to the permanent site, I am ready).

Did a self check-in at the terminals in the Air Canada stand, and went for weigh-in of my luggages. Was told will get them at destination.

Straight flight to Vancouver, like 15 hours or there about. Smooth flight, though I remember saying some little prayers with little turbulence every now and then as there was this feeling of the plane being overcome by it.

In Vancouver a lady at the door told me to go take my luggage and continue. As I was already told I would get my luggage at arrival, I asked her if she was sure I need to. She then asked where I traveled from, I told her Australia, she then said no need, I should go ahead, I'll get in at destination ( in my mind I was like, better country good oh, I then imagined what I would have gone through with the heavy boxes if otherwise).

Joined the queue to immigration, was then redirected into another area for PR and students. Got briefed by an Indian lady, then to immigration for stamping of my COPR and passport. Smooth process. Met an Australian here and we got chatty...Fine soul.

Then went through the scans to catch my connecting flight to Calgary. Quick process.

Was in Calgary in no time, went to claim my baggage, met up with the Australian again also claiming her baggage and snow board, my brother came tho pick me up, offered her a lift to her Airbnb, she came to work and holiday in Canada, hoping to go for Snow boarding lessons someday,

The posts here had made me panic, as I felt I was to under dressed to deal with the cold. Told my brother to bring winter jacket for me. But I didn't really need to use it. It was cold, but to a level I am used to (if coming from 9ja still get your warm clothing oh).
I'm still going to get my winter clothing for the freezing temperatures.

Went straight up from airport to get my documents done, got a sim (Fido), health insurance (was told to come back when I have proof of address), Social number ( met a very nice Asian guy, who was just trying to be sweet, told me happy birthday, even though it was like 2 weeks ago, and I think he told me welcome to Canada like three times, seeing I just landed).
Tried asking about drivers license as my license expired on my birthday while in Australia I have been, was told they just need the license even expired to proof that I have been driving, then I'll take the lessons and issued (something like that).

Also opened a bank account with Cibc after gong to different banks, and being told to set up appointment.

That's my Landing story, still jet lagged, so no much done yet.

I read somewhere that you finished from MMU. I did my MSc at Salford University and stayed at M6 area. Did you stay at Salford?
salford:

Winter gears from the UK would not work efficiently in Canada. Their winter apparels are not suited for the extreme cold in Canada. I moved here from the UK and ended up throwing my UK winter jacket in the trash bin.

SOS!
Please I really need help with accommodation. Yes I have gone through the various websites and still going through them. I’ve even viewed a few places but for some reason, they’re all unavailable until dec1. I’m not sure why. I need a place by next week Thursday Nov 22. That’s when my Airbnb will expire and I really don’t want to pay for another Airbnb as I’m seriously on a budget. Please anyone that has an apartment and maybe wants to share rent? Or you know of an available place please contact me. I’m looking for private room in a shared apartment preferably with private bathroom too. If it’s shared bathroom no wahala or a basement apartment
I’m a single female and I’m in Mississauga. I’d prefer Mississauga but any place around would do. Like Brampton or Toronto city. Please help a sister in need.
Thanks in anticipation!

Thanks einsteino for the pictures, very thoughtful of you! Looking at the pictures though, one would think we were talking about living in the North Pole smiley

I have stayed in the East Coast of the US in the deadliest of winters and didn't require this much, is it safe to assume that Canada (in your case Montreal/Toronto et al) is colder? I did check the weather today, NY is 390, Phil is 450 and Ottawa is 370.

I just want to manage my expectations. Thanks again.

I havent been to the U.S but I have seen a video of an American who landed in Toronto during winter and he was outraged at the cold and kept asking "why do y'all live in a place like this?" Lol. My guess is that he is from a temperate U.S state, cos Toronto isnt that cold by canadian standards, that would be the likes of Regina. Anyways Canada is north of the U.S, so should be further up the poles and so
most parts of Canada should be colder than the USA.
But it isnt cold all year. From what I have heard it gets very hot during summer, and generally depends on what part of Canada you live in. Montreal was much colder than Toronto, if I am to compare my time in both cities.

The cold in most canadian cities is not something you cant tolerate if you dress for it, and if your work is indoor, ultimately you would just commute from a warm house to a warm office by driving a warm car - via a snow stormed road though(hopefully you arent as broke as me and dont need to wait buses in the cold). Anyways there are people living in Yukon, though i dont know how they manage to call that living, to me i think it's more like battling the elements.

What I least anticipated is how much effect the short day light can have on one, I am beginning to suspect that it's affecting me psychologically.

Rent here is usually on a month to month basis ie 1st day of the month to last day, that's why. You could find some that are available to rent immediately but they would be in the minority. There was a shared basement apartment I was to rent in Mississauga but got turned down cos they wanted a female, I would ask to see if its still available and if they havent a filipino/indian preference.

What you could do in the meantime is just wander around to see if you would find any to rent signs. Also, speak to as many buddies who are already settled in your neighbourhood esp nigerians you know, thats how I managed to get a place even when I wasnt yet in Toronto. Brampton should have couple of free places, only that its dominated by indians and dem dey want Veggies. Na guys i sabi for Brampton, so they may not be able to help with info as shared rentals here usually would stick to one gender.

By the way have you checked facebook marketplace too?

Thanks Einsteino for responding to my post. Please I’m looking forward to hearing back from you about the shared basement while I continue my search. I’ve encountered a few of those vegetarian requirements. I just gave such a long hiss. Anyway, I don’t have any buddies here. Hard to believe I know, but the only person I know in Canada lives in SK. So I’m kinda on my own here that’s why I’m soliciting for help from the good people of NL. I’ve checked fb marketplace but those communities that may be more beneficial to me like ‘Mississauga buy and sell’ et al are closed groups. I’ve requested to join though. I hope they approve me soon.
As for your guys, please still ask on my behalf, they may know a place that’s available.
Thanks again. I truly appreciate

Hello everyone,

Please what do you think of project management and supply chain prospects for immigrants in canada? Are they fields where an immigrant can break into successfully? Are there jobs?

I'm thinking of enrolling for a graduate certificate program in conestoga college in any of these programs. It is just a one year program.

Please seniors in the house, what do you think?

That's what it feels like now in Edmonton. ....

Some things I've learned so far (Edmonton, Alberta)...

1. Research, Research and research before you leave for Canada, trust me every "little" info you can gather will help.

2. Charities function well... Ask questions and don't be shy to ask again.... I called a that charity almost completely furnished the 2 bed I rented from bed, to sofa to dining table & chairs to plates, iron, toaster etc saved me more than 2k. Major things I bought was just TV ($100) & microwave ($15).

3. Contact a settlement group like Bredin, EMCN, they're really useful and give you loads of info. Also there lots of benefits you could benefit from before you start working like cheaper bus pass etc.

4. Look @ some bridging programs being sponsored by the govt, like I know of 1 with CCIS in Calgary for power engineering and another with EMCN for project management, they are mainly for un/under employed imigrants. They might also have other courses that might relate to your previous/ desired field of work. The government will pay you for upkeep while the training is on-going as the trainings are like full time work.

6. Start preparing for your class 7 knowledge test, even if you don't plan to drive immediately as this will serve as an easy means of identification instead of carrying intl passport or even PR card around.

7. In my opinion, if you're already driving in naija, uber is a good side biz. So instead of me doing survival jobs while waiting to get licensed or to get a job in my desired field, I could just do uber (if possible). You'll need a Class 4 drivers license and a car not more than 10yrs old from production date.

8. I believe employers value soft skills more than tech skills ( almost any grad with work exp will possess the later, but few have the former)

9. IELTS (RLS) will come in handy..... lol. You'll experience it daily,

10. it can be sunny outside but the temp is -18. That was my experience this morning, didn't go out with gloves, thought I'll loose my fingers. The cold is biting and REALLY COLD..

11. Have a clear cut career plan both 2months and 3 yrs plan BUT KEEP AN OPEN MIND...

My 2 cents...........

Hello guys.
Pls i need answer to something dat has been borthering me. I found out im expecting a baby before receiving ppr. Have gotten copr now n will b landing sk on d 6th. Pregnancy will barely 3months. Do i still need to inform cic about it or its ok for me to land?

If pregnancy will be barely 3 months upon landing in Canada then you have nothing to worry about as documentation cannot be issued for an unborn child. We received our COPR before our little one was born. They were cancelled and then reissued after we informed CIC of the new change. We had to upload documentation for our newborn online (passport, birth certificate) and then sent off our passports to get the new COPR issued.

If the case was that your little one was born after you received your COPR (in Nigeria) you would need to inform CIC of the new addition into your family so proper documentation can be issued for landing in Canada. As for you, it sounds like you would be having a Canadian baby. Wishing you a safe landing.

Just do some research so you know the minimum number of hours you'll need to work to get employment insurance (equivalent of our mat leave pay) when you have your baby. The payments will definitely come in handy... I think 50% of your salary for one year or 33% for 18 months.

I sent photos for the 3rd time late October. Called last week Monday and was told they are yet to send it for processing but that I will not have to send another photos even if the 3rd set didn’t meet the spec.

I will keep buzzing them regularly.

How far with your cards. I harassed CIC with calls and via their web form stressing that the wait is passed the normal timeline and I got my card shortly after.

Please call them at least once a week until you hear your card has been sent for processing.
