To the mods in Literature section, I want to understand if I have done something wrong. Maybe I broke a rule or offended someone. I noticed that my stories no longer make front page. My last 4 stories on here haven't made front page. The exposure I get from my stories hitting front page have helped with my career in the past, but things have really slowed down.

Anyway, to the readers of this story, I will post an update tomorrow.

Chapter 5

It was already getting dark by the time he left the man’s home office. After talking about what he would be doing as a magician’s assistance, the man had prompted him to start his visualization session right there in his house. It was supposed to be a ten minute session, but Sesan had stretched it to twenty minutes. Just as the man had instructed, he had imagined himself spending time, laughing and talking to his crush, Huawa. To make the visualization session feel real, he made use of his sense of sight, touch, sound, and even his sense of smell…perceiving how he thought she would smell; like a garden full of roses. At the end of the session, the whole thing felt so real that he felt like he already knew her. Sesan couldn’t wait to get home to practice his new exercise again.

When he got to the Hebert Macaulay road junction from the University road in Akoka, the traffic was crazy; everywhere was blocked. He stood at the bus stop weighing his options. He knew there was no way he was getting a bus any time soon, so he started looking out for bikes. His eye caught a petite looking lady in blue jeans and a white body hugging long sleeve top at the T junction to his left. She was some sort of reporter, but her camera guy was a teen in skinny jeans and roller skates, holding up an iPhone to record her. Sesan looked down at her feet and saw she was also in roller skates. She started moving here and there while talking, and her camera guy followed her around. He had a better look of her and saw she was actually a young girl, about his age.

He heard sirens in the distant and cars started making way for an incoming convoy of police vans. It amazed him how a way was made for them even as jam parked the road was. The girl kept skating backwards, and talking to the camera; she was so engrossed in what she was doing and didn’t know an incoming convoy was approaching. When she did notice, she froze. Without a second to think, Sesan leaped into action; snatching her petite body out of the way in time to prevent the black Hilux van from hitting her. He turned around swiftly, hitting his backpack hard on the passenger’s side glass of an old, red Mercedes Benz 200; protecting the girl from hitting the car face first. He could feel her warm breath on his face and her heart beating fast on his chest; she was in shock. “Are you okay?” Sesan asked and she nodded, still looking shocked. He slowly let go of his hold on her, and when her knees buckled, he held her up again. By this time, a crowd had already gathered around them, wailing and talking about how lucky the girl was. Her camera guy came to her side, thanked Sesan, held the girl’s hand, and skated out of the scene with her. Sesan quickly crossed back to the side of the road he had been earlier and kept walking, heading back towards the Magician’s house. He was disoriented himself, and also didn’t want to be around the crowd that had just gathered.

He crossed to the other side of the road that lead back to his University, and hadn’t walked far when he heard a familiar voice call his name. He looked up, shocked as the blue Renault Megane veered off the road and parked a few meters in front of him. She stepped out of the car, wearing black jeans, a white polo top, and a black baseball cap. She turned the cap to the back, folded her arms, and leaned on the car, with a big grin on her face. He smiled and shook his head as he approached her.

Chapter 6

Ngozi never picked him up after classes, but she had gone out to shop for Black Friday shopping, and was trying to avoid traffic by passing inner roads while going home when she had seen Sesan. As they drove home, she told him about all the great things she had bought for ridiculously cheap prices. She mentioned the name of the store, which Sesan didn’t know, and told him she even got him a pair of jeans, and three polo tops. She got herself her normal tomboy clothes too, but most of what she had gotten was feminine clothes as she said she was trying to make the transition to dressing more like a lady.

“How come you are just leaving school anyway?” She asked when the car finally got quiet.
“I…I actually had a job interview.”
“Ooh! You’re in your second year at the University and already going for job interviews? I’m jealous.”
“Well, it is not that kind of job. Not a corporate job. It’s…” He didn’t know how to tell her he was getting a job because he needed money. Their families had in the same tax bracket, till his dad left, and things got tough for him and his family. “It is sort of like a part time job.”
“Hmm. That’s interesting. So what’s the job about?”
“I’ll be a magician’s assistance.” He said.
She took a few quick glances at him before saying, “Have you suddenly developed a sense of humor or something?”
“What? What do you mean?”
“First, you tell me you have an online friend named Chun Lee. Now you are telling me you are going to be working part time as a magician’s assistant.”
Sesan couldn’t help but laugh. “It does sound funny” He said between laughs.
“Please tell me you’re kidding.”
“No, I’m not. It’s for real.”
“So…you got a job as a magician’s assistant? Like a real magician?”
“Yes.”
“Like a local magician, or the type that pulls rabbits out of hats?”
“The latter.”
“Hmm. It’s still really strange to me.”
“Yea. It’s not like it is every day you hear of a stage magician in Nigeria.”
“Yea; and wait, aren’t magician’s assistants always beautiful girls in skimpy clothes?”
“Yea, that’s for distraction. He would still have those girls, but I will be like someone that can perform his tricks even if he isn’t around.”
“Hmm. So you are going to go into the dark arts now?”
“What? No. In the end, they are all tricks; nothing real about the magic we will be performing.”
“Nothing at all?”
“Nothing.” He said and the car went quiet for a while as he remembered his visualization session. Just thinking of it made him feel joyous.
“Why are you smiling?” She asked with a quizzical look on her face.
“What? Nothing.”
“Come on, tell me. I know there is something else you are not telling me.”
“Well, okay, the man taught me something else. He taught me how to get whatever I want.”
“How?”
“By the use of visualization; the use of my imagination.”
“That’s that law of attraction shiit, right?”
“What?”
“Law of attraction…The Secret, Think and Grow Rich, Power of Your Subconscious Mind and all those books are based on that theory.”
“You mean you know about that stuff?”
“The more shocking thing is that you don’t know about it. I doubt all those stuff work anyway.”
“I believe it works. The man is too old to be lying.”
“Hmm. So the magician is an old man? That makes your story creepier.” She said and Sesan went quiet. She could see he wasn’t feeling her vibe and she didn’t want to offend her only friend, so she switched mood. “Tell me more. Tell me how he instructed you on how to use your imagination to get what you want.”
He looked at her to be sure she was serious before saying, “Okay.”

……….

Sesan spent the remaining trip back home explaining the process of visualization to her, and they even spent some more time parked outside his house as she asked him some further questions. He finally got out, said bye, and she revered the car all the way to her house. They lived on the same street, just a few houses apart.

He pulled out his phone as he walked into his compound and was surprised to see he had 32 missed calls and 4 text messages. His heart skipped a bit. This was similar to what had happened when Ngozi’s brother had died a few years ago. With shaky hands, he clicked on the missed calls, and saw they were from a lot of different people; his friends from school, his cousins, and one was from his mom. He was about to check out the messages when he heard a car come to a screeching halt outside and someone get out in a hurry. He walked back towards the gate and was surprised to see Ngozi approaching with a shocked look on her face. “Dude, you’re trending.” She said out of breath as she passed him her phone. He collected the phone from her and searched her eyes for answers. “Look at the phone.”
Sesan looked at her phone screen and cursed under his breath, “What tha…”

Chapter 7

It was dark now, and they were back in Ngozi’s car, on their phones going through the series of social media and gossip sites that Sesan was trending on. Apparently, the girl he had saved from getting hit by the police van was a popular online traffic celebrity called Gidi Girl. She reports live traffic news around different locations in Lagos. She was Live on Instagram when Sesan had saved her. Her camera quickly cut up the video, and posted that part on her Twitter page, and went viral immediately. People started calling him a hero and wanted to know his identity; girls were making remarks about his good looks and they all wanted to know if he was single or not. Even the Gidi Girl herself wanted to know if he was single. He had become sort of like a modern day Cinderella; only that in this case he was a guy and not a girl.

It was like his whole world was spinning out of control. He had never experienced anything like this in his life, and it was making him really nervous. The video was everywhere in minutes; Linda Ikeji’s blog, Instablog 9ja, Nairaland, and a host of other online places. Ngozi was busy reading Tweets about him on her phone and laughing every once in a while. He was used to her talking all the time, and seeing her this way made him even more nervous. His phone rang and caller ID showed it was his mom. He picked up and she asked if he was the one that opened the gate earlier, he said yes. He told her he was outside the house with Ngozi, and would soon come in.
After ending the call with his mom, he turned to face Ngozi and said, “Wait, so what do I do now?”
“I don’t know, Sesanrella.” She said and laughed. “Go and find your princess; or your princesses.”
He shook his head before saying, “I’m serious. This whole thing is driving me crazy.”
She laughed a little more before saying, “Don’t worry; it will die down in a few hours when there is another trend.”
“Okay.”
“Unless someone discloses your Twitter handle and girls start bombarding you with messages.”
“Hmm.”
“Why are you freaking out?” She said and laughed a bit before adding, “You could use this to your advantage.”
“How?”
“I don’t know. Just think about something. You have free publicity right now.”
“Hmm.”
“Or, you could just have fun with it. Meet up with girls.” She said and put her phone up to his face. “See, this girl says she wants a date with you. She even left an email address you can reach her own.” Sesan stared at the phone screen for a long time. The girl was more beautiful than any girl he had ever known. “You do know you are a good looking guy, right?”
He sighed, put his phone in sleep mode, and opened the car door. “I need to just shut this whole thing out of my mind for now.” He said as he got out of the car. “Umm. I heard the street Landlord meeting is at your place tomorrow?”
“Yes. I still don’t know why they don’t do that thing on the last Saturday like every other street.”
“See you tomorrow.” He said and hit the roof of her car.
“See ya.” She said and started up her car. He watched her reverse all the way to her house before he turned around and walked into his compound.

He entered the house through the front door, walked through the dark living room and was already climbing up the stairs when he noticed his mom was sitting alone in the dark. He knew something was wrong right away. He turned around, dropped his back pack on the base of the stairs and walked back into the living room. “It’s stuffy in here, mom.” He said as he walked from one corner of the room to the next, raising the heavy curtains and opening the windows. When he was done, he sat next to her on the three seater couch facing the TV and smiled; she smiled back at him but didn’t say anything. It was a full moon night, and a little streak of moonlight illuminated the room enough for them to see each other’s faces. His mom was a pretty, petite looking woman in her early forties. She could pass for someone in her twenties and people usually mistook her for his sister. She was in a white floral print gown. Her rich black hair was packed to the back in a bun, revealing all the beautiful features of her pretty face.

“What’s wrong mom?” He said in a low voice.
With a quizzical look on her face she responded with, “Nothing.”
From how weak her voice sounded, he could tell something was really wrong, but he didn’t want to probe any further, so he just sat there in the dark with her, lots of thoughts running through his mind. So much had happened in the last couple of hours, and the more he tried to shot them out, the more thy flooded his mind.
“The house rent is due in two months, Sesan.” She said and cleared her throat before adding, “I have only been able to come up with half of the money. I don’t know if I will be able to get the other half in time.”
Sesan’s brain started working immediately. The house rent for their three bedroom duplex was eight hundred thousand Naira, which meant his mom already had four hundred thousand Naira, and they needed another four hundred to complete the rent. He had never held that kind of money before, but he just had a strong belief he would be able to come up with the money. Mr. Ojo, the magician had told him his salary for the job of the magician’s assistance was going to be sixty thousand Naira a month. If he saved his next two months salary, that would be one hundred and twenty thousand bucks; he would still need to come up with two hundred and eighty thousand Naira. Ngozi had told him earlier that the total she had spent on her Black Friday shopping spree was ninety-six thousand Naira. Her parents were rich, but it would be really awkward asking them for help. His mom wouldn’t even like it.
“There is a man…” She started saying and stopped to cough before continuing with, “There is a man that can help, but I really don’t want to ask him.”
“Don’t mom. Don’t ask him; whoever he is.”
“Sesan…”
“Don’t worry mom.” He said, cutting her off. “Give me two weeks; I’ll come up with something.” Sesan quickly got off the couch, picked his bag off the floor and headed up the stairs before his mom could say anything back. Although his Dad and Mom had never told him the real reason they had separated, he had guessed one of them had cheated. His guess had always been that it was his Dad, now he was thinking maybe it was his Mom. He didn’t want to believe it, and he sure didn’t want to hear about any man.
He got into his room, flung his back pack to one corner, shut the door, and dumped his body on the bed angrily.
