Actress and Mum of one, Tonto Dikeh, today expressed her displeasure over the culture in Nigeria where people refer those to older than them as Aunty or Uncle.

Tonto in a post shared on her IG page, said although she grew up with such a mentality, she will never allow her son, King Andre, refer to anyone who is not family as Uncle or Aunty.

WOULD YOU RATHER YOUR KIDS CALL STRANGERS MR/MISTER MRS/MA'AM THAN AUNTY OR UNCLE
I grew up in the age where everybody is called uncle and aunty wether related to us or not.
I really have FOUND this very offensive over the years and even actually embraced it to as i call TOTAL strangers Names like MAMA,AUNTY,UNCLE ETC..

I MEAN I EVEN CALLED MY SCHOOL TEACHERS,BIBLE SCHOOL TEACHERS (Uncle and aunty)??
Having a child now,i don't think i wld ever allow him address anyone with uncle nor aunty..

He will be extremely polite but for no reason wld he be calling anyone outside my family and his fathers family UNCLE NOR AUNTY!!!
NEVERRRRRRRR!!!!!!

That's how an overzealous religious friend of mine said that she wouldn't allow people call her son Davido if his name is David.

Aunty Tonto, there's nothing wrong with a child calling an older male uncle or aunty, it's just that you grew up and realised its real definition and all of a sudden you feel all too knowledgeable and exposed to let your child commit something so erroneous (in your mind).

In our quest for civilization and adopting of foreign culture we are slowly eroding little (probably unspoken) values of our own, like the "Community raising a child". In such instance everyone is like family and because of such bonds you cannot go to your neighbour's house and call his mother "Ma"; it would seem disrespectful.

Well, I am sure you also called Churchill's mother "Mother-in-law" and not mom, since you want to be so formal. Which explains a lot, really.

For me, it is just your ego talking because I think koreans refer to "Uncles" (older males) as Oppa. Language is so flexible and as long as the other person gets the message I really don't think there is a need for changing.

Anyway, your child , your business.

If the dad can take custody of this boy, it would be better for the boy. This woman just dey use boy do all kinds of experiments.

That said, I think Tonto should be more concerned about inviting Bobrisky to her house while she's still grooming a kid. There are things you don't confuse kids with. BTW, does calling an elderly man/woman papa/mama make them your parents? I think Africans are traditional people and that's why we call people we are not related to mama/papa/Aunty, Uncle, sister, etc.

I have come to realise that no Mata what u do Dike, that boy will still call some people aunty and uncle and there is absolutely nothing u gonna do about it, or will go with him everywhere?. In addition, calling aunty or uncle make d kid it is d gud hometrainning d child receves that either make or mar him!
