The photo above, taken during the Battle of Mammy Yoko Hotel in Freetown(May 1997) shows a young Lieutenant Alechenu in the heat of battle, sans flak jacket and with the old mascot of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps embossed on his shirt sleeve.

It is a testimony to how far we have come that practically all troops on CTC0IN operations as we speak, wear flak jackets. We even now have a joint DICON-Maron venture producing live jackets in Nigeria as we write this.

During the ECOMOG era, flak jackets were an absolute luxury item for Nigerian troops, as tens of thousands of soldiers and guerrillas slugged it out in savage hand to hand and street by street fighting in urban warfare around Freetown and Monrovia. It underscores the sheer bravery and heroism of those ECOMOG soldiers whose gallantry we shall never cease to celebrate on Beegeagle’s Blog.

Well, Alechenu is a Commanding Officer of a battalion these days(as of March 2012) and wears the rank insignia of a Lieutenant Colonel. He is of Idoma ethnic extraction and as such, a native son of Benue State.

The presidency has ordered immediate arms procurement of critical equipment for the armed forces in line with the Federal Government policy of purchasing such items from the original manufacturers on government-to- government basis.

The president also directed the enhancement of the welfare of troops, particularly those serving in operational areas within the country, Guardian reports.

Minister of Defence, Mansur Muhammad Dan-Ali who disclosed this yesterday during a meeting with the service chiefs at the he Ship House, Headquarters of Ministry of Defence, ordered the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, to relocate to the North East pending when the security situation improves.

He also directed the General Officer Commanding the 8 Division, Nigerian Army to relocate his tactical headquarters from Sokoto to Gusau, Zamfara State to oversee the conduct of Operation Sharan Dahi.

The minister mandated the chief of defence staff and Buratai to effect changes in the operational commands of Operations Delta Safe in the Niger Delta, Lafiya Dole in the North East, Sharan Dahi in Zamfara and Katsina states and Awatse in the South West. Dan-Ali said the changes were to enable them meet up with the current threats and security challenges in their areas of responsibility.

The directives came as a pro-democracy organisation, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) said the special forces of the army fighting in the ongoing counter insurgency in the northeast needed special weapons to fight the Boko Haram terrorists. To this end, the group urged the National Assembly to pass a legislative framework which will make funding of the defence sector as a first line charge to ensure efficient and effective roles by the military to stabilize national security.

HURIWA lamented that the $1billion said to have been taken from the escrow account was yet to drop at the Defence Ministry, wondering why the government could allow bureaucratic bottlenecks to slow down the process of releases and utilization of fund for the prosecution of the ongoing war against terrorists.

The group also canvassed the creation of what it calls ‘War budgets’ and the time line for national security objectives that must be achieved by a particular set of service chiefs, and a specified tenure so that other competent professional and combat-tested and trusted military generals are appointed to replace the serving military chiefs so the counter terror war does not become a commercially viable sector to be used by them for personal aggrandizement.

These were contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and National Media Director Miss Zainab Yusuf.

"Government will soon buy modern weapons to stop Boko Haram" - President Buhari.

Your Excellency, people voted you to change our nation, change our army. So you, retired army general trained in tank MBT combat in America, does not know T-72 tank is from 1970 and obsolete? You dont know Vickers tank maximum shooting range is only 500 meters or half a kilometer, while Boko Haram shoots anti-aircraft from 3 km far away cutting off the head of our troops that cannot reply fire from long distance?

Nigeria has 1970 tech tanks made in 1980 used under Buhari an America trained army tank warfare commander 4 Star General, so its now 120 innocent Nigerian soldiers died in 45 minutes fiery combat defending our base with broken down T-72 that fired twice, old gun stopped jammed, Vickers tank ancient relic of 1980 could not even touch the enemy far away, allowing Boko HARAM fighters to enter the base as our tokunbo tanks malfunctioned after 40 years of manufacture, sale and resale, and over-use for Oyinbo's own training in Europe, then sold to Nigeria third hand, used four years non-stop in Borno war, no yearly mechanical maintenance overhaul till guns broke down and most ERA broke off, because we have only 47 old obsolete T-72 tanks when Algeria bought 500 T-90, India 2,000 T-90, Uganda 44 T-90, Azerbaijan 100 T-90, so Buhari does not know his army is badly equipped until death visited 120 widows and fatherless in Nigeria?

What modern equipment these Buhari and Dan Ali vow to buy now, maybe a lie, maybe true, ask them to name these modern weapons they want to buy now; no name, no list, you are in darkness again my friend, PHCN darkness includes information blackout in this unlucky Nigeria that is always a victim of bad leadership since 1960.

Over 30,000 innocent Nigerian civilians and an estimate of 2,000 soldiers have died wasted in this Borno war turned to juicy business for army generals, ministry of defence civilian directors and politicians by looting money meant for real modern weapons in good quantity.

I begin to wonder if Nigerian army generals with BSc degrees and ministry of defence Abuja directors with MSc degrees know the meaning of modern weapons, because GEJ era same people promised us modern weapons for our billions of dollars but procured 1970 technology T-72 tanks. So Buhari-Buratai can also now buy more T-72 tanks obsolete relic of 1980 factory line and call it modern weapon, while Boko Haram has now 2018 acquired deadly antitank weapons beheading our junk tokunbo T-72 tanks like Sallah ram.

The crying blood of 32,000 dead innocent Nigerians is on your head and your children's head for the blood money you steal from our weapons fund.

You are not wrong. It has always frustrated me the army's inability to state what it wants nor what it has ordered. It is not as if it is locally made technologically advanced equipment that needs to be kept under the hat.

I don't see the reasoning behind it apart from not wanting to be scrutinised as it has no basis in strategic thinking. Where is the transparency?

In fact, knowing the inventory of your enemy is a deterrence in itself.
