The rate of denials of visa from the consulate is alarming. There appears to be a policy shift as people that ordinarily qualifies for a visa are refused these days

Not all Nigerians 're running away. There exists several airline routing to the US daily and this would only have been possible because many visit and return otherwise who would those airlines be catering for

The UK and most other countries explain their reasons for denying visas to applicants in writing, making it easy for those denied to work on those areas and correct them. The fact the US issues pre printed papers with no pointer to why applicants are refused makes the entire experience difficult and people are left to make the same mistakes over and over

While other countries continue to adjudicate their visa decision based on documents, the consulate continue to do document free visa adjudication making the process lottery like. Those qualified but less prepared fail, while unqualified applicants but well prepared are issued visas. This also leads to more applicants who never returns, which are used to punish the countries involved in future visa decisions

They need to really review their process

Serious nonsense. They should further make the process even more difficult. Everyone should sit down and fix his or her country. You want world class or American class education, make it happen here. Do it if in power or be an activist for it if without power. America is not what it is today by people fleeing it, but staying and fighting for a better society.

If every man on earth flees their country into America then we have a one country earth because every man on earth has one challenge or the other.

Let's stop rumning away from this country, no matter how enjoyable and comfortable life may be abroad, you are still a second class citizen. If everybody decides to leave, i don't what will become of our dear country. The rejection y'all are getting is a way to tell us that we should strive to restructure this country ( not in Atiku's case). I know if we fight this battle, the upcoming generation will have something to live for, a coumtry they can boldly call their own.
I know we'll get there.

What you people should do is mandate the embassy not to collect visa fee until the visa has been issued.

Some people's comment show how they see themselves as American slave.

Yes, America is a sovereign state but does business on Nigeria soil. He is therefore answerable to the Nigerian government.

How can people pay a lot of Non- refundable fee and yet denied visa unjustly. If you are not ready to accept Nigerians let them make it plain rather than wasting our time.

Anyway, if you are interested in travelling to other countries of the world, contact us. You only pay when your visa is ready!
Cheers

I just love the lion's heart of this Kayode Bello. He always stand to dare authorities even at his own detriment. This reminds me how he was rusticated from UI, how he was expelled from law school just for him to kick against the abnormalities in the schools. This is the real lawyer we know even without there accolade "Barrister".

The new Fela of our time.

The National assembly does NOT have the power to summon any foreign ambassador. When will this power drunk legislators understand simple proceedure, thats why no foreign country takes us serious. They should rather look for ways to fix the rot in our education system

Don't know why you cannot understand what is in plain sight. They are pretty candid about this. Your people overwhelmingly donot return. They have a working immigration system with local and foreign agents who track these things and the dishonesty is glaring. Most Nigerians lie about their intent so they have a duty to protect their country. Let me ask you. With the way foreigners flood Nigeria from Niger, Chad and Mali some bearing arms and some perpetuating crimes, don't you wish we had a proactive border control and immigration system and don't you fear Nigeria will be irreparably damaged if this illegal immigration continues unchecked. That is how they feel.

As for the cost of visas, that is deliberate to discourage applications in the long term. Make it a costly system and people will think thrice about repeating the process. Their message is loud and clear. They want to slow down entry and illegal migration which costs them and their economy more than the visa fees could ever mitigate.

Every country has a right to its immigration policy. Not every country is as loose and careless with its demography like Nigeria.

The National Assembly has summoned the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stuart Symington, over the alleged high rate of visa denial of Nigerians.

The invitation was said to be at the instance of an activist, Kayode Bello, who petitioned the House over the matter.

The PUNCH had done an investigation into how many Nigerian students seeking to study in US schools were denied visas despite spending a lot of money on different fees.

Some of the fees, our correspondent learnt, were application fees, evaluation fees, courier fees, service fees, visa fees, school fees.

The fees were said to be non-refundable.

While some of the students claimed that they were denied visas because they were not married, others said they were denied because only one of their parents was their sponsor.

A parent claimed that his daughter’s interview was cut short because she asked the interviewer to speak up.

Our correspondent was further told that the embassy usually issued preprinted blue papers to those it rejected without giving a specific reason for the decision.

More than three weeks after enquiries were sent to the embassy, no response had been got by The PUNCH.

A former ambassador to the US, John Campbell had, however, told our correspondent that visas were given by consular officers on a case by case basis, adding that the refusal of many people to return home after finishing their programmes made the process difficult.

The activist, Bello, petitioned the National Assembly through a member representing the Ede and Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Prof. Mojeed Alabi, after suffering a similar fate of denial.

The summon, titled, ‘Indiscriminate denial of United States of America visa and illegal increment of exchange rate of visa fee by the American embassy’ was signed by the House Committee Chairman on Public Petitions, Uzo Azubuike.

The two-page document, dated November 27, 2018, and a copy of which was received by our correspondent, said the hearing would hold on Tuesday, December 4 at 2pm at the House of Representatives Room 429.

The House asked the ambassador to present 20 copies of his defence.

The Clerk of the House, Mr Omale Adoyi, confirmed the development to our correspondent on Monday.

He, however, said the US embassy rejected the summon.

“But we will go on with the hearing and may have to adjourn if they fail to show up,” he added.

This is unnecessary

To the news

US embassy does not deny someone a visa without stating the reason

This is bad journalism

On that blue paper, they usually state why an applicant is not qualified to travel to the US

They usually cite that they fear that the applicant does not have enough ties to bring them back to their home country

The issue is the fees. They should make the fees refundable except the visa fee of course. Imagine spending half a million 3 different times yet you're being denied visa
