The last time I was in Nigeria was 2013.. I always planned to go home every year but as many of you know .. Yankee work and bills, always super busy. However this time around I decided to surprise everybody.

I had to first figure out how the dual passport situation. When exiting US - checked in with the Airline with Nigerian Passport, US TSA security check only needed boarding pass and valid ID. Flying Lufthansa, trip from US to Frankfurt was ok, although it seems the seats got smaller but the services were ok. The problem started from Frankfurt to Nigeria. Lufthansa ensured they gave Nigerians the worst services they can come up with. The boarding gate was in the middle of nowhere, the gate lounge was not opened so we were standing at their corridor, finally when their staff came - no apology .she opened and we all trooped in like Sheep. I never felt so degraded - worst customer service I've seen at Airports. The flight time changed without warning and no apology, sometimes they made announcement in German without translation. They asked us to check-in the hand luggage cos they claimed there was no space in the plane. Finally we got a rowdy boarding - survival of the fittest. In my history of flying I have never seen such hostile hostesses, the aircraft bathroom was not working properly and they would leave your food trays with you untill you beg them to remove it.
When choosing airlines ..I always wanted to avoid the flying Turkey or those Airlines with terrible customer service - I expected more from Lufthansa - however some said they have excellent service , they just don't think Nigerians deserve it.

After 21 hours journey I finally saw Lagos Airspace - Looked like it was enveloped in smoke and dust - every other Airspace I saw you could see the houses clearly - Lagos had this fog cover that makes it look like a 2nd cloud. The next thing was the German announcement - a strange sound from the bottom of the plane and the English translation said Landing was aborted. Oh God of Moses - I didn't tell anyone I was coming home o - Jesus .. save your child .. Landing aborted bawo? After a period that felt like several hours of prayers and fasting - we landed.. and behold the glorious MMIA that looks a building from a CIA movie - when they want to go kidnap a fugitive from a remote jungle in deep Africa. Our airport is the first impression - it looked so dilapidated with missing windows and broken down trucks. Yep ! This is home ! I guess I was expecting more since 2013, however this is Nigeria. I started missing O'Hare immediately.

To be continued .....

Welcome to Lagos. Welcome to Nigeria! Welcome to our beautiful country where almost everything is done differently. Welcome to the craze, the heat, the smell, the neverending traffic jams, the hustling and bustling. Welcome to the agoin beans, agege bread, our unique shawarma, point and kill fish and chips. Welcome to NEPA wahala. Welcome home. No place like it.

Yes, I do agree with you.

The Lufthansa route from Frankfurt to Lagos has been getting worst with their customer and boarding services.

Even most of the planes they use on that route is so old.

Continued -

So we landed in MMIA, welcome to Nigeria. However we had an incidence when we were still on the runway - Most passengers got up and started opening the luggage compartment - The Pilot had to announce everyone to get back and buckle up. I also heard boarding gate at London Heathrow airport to Nigeria is also a war zone too. We need to learn to respect ourselves or else nobody would.

So the custom and immigration process were very smooth - presented the Nigerian Passport - I guess the recent rants by that actor had affected them. No extortion as I expected. Luggage claim was almost an hour. However the excitement of seeing my mother after 5 years dint make me feel the delay. My brother picked me up - I guess i have changed - grown myself some beards..lol

Oh my gawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwd...the wet clammy heaaaaaaaaaaat !!!! it was a hot sauna !!!! I just left Chicago snow blizzard, now I am in serious high humidity heat. Wow, it was just 2013, why does it feel so different in 2018? Then the drive home - Lagos looked much more crowded than I left it (from statistics 2013 -12.5m, 2016 - 21m) Everybody seems angry about something or with someone, the traffic was hell. Under the bridge in Ikeja looked like a scene from Mad Max. Its been a while I experienced this- I kept screaming at my brother to watch out ; he was frustrated. He said my brother who came last month from UK kept "matching" invisible brake at the passenger seat too. lol. I decided to close my eyes all the way home, see no evil, hear no evil. I wont survive 21 hours (+Stop over) flight to die of Cardiac Arrest in Lagos. My mother did not know I was coming home ..so you can imagine the surprise - she was about to eat and she saw me- she screamed !!! everyone screamed !!! except for my brother whom I told.

Ok so we "talked" till late in the night. I had a lot to do, probably planned spending 2 nights in my mothers house and move to an hotel in 2 days. I got myself this awesome bug repellent from Amazon, the rating was fantastic - I literally bathe myself in it, generator blaring in the background - fan in full mode, AC blaring, closed my eyes and the nightmare started - A Celestial Church around the corner decided to include me in their Midnight deliverance Night vigil. Why would any sane church put a cone loudspeaker facing the neighboring houses. Welcome to Nigeria.

To be continued - the hotel experience, Uber experience, Kingsize, Ocean Basket, La Mango .. I would send pictures later.

Thanks I brought Imodium and Advil. I stayed off all water except Eva bottled water from authorized distributor. Also no street food for me. Stayed in hotel throughout. I missed the malaria vaccination too so i was extra careful with mosquito bites .

Bro, I love this thread already. I am waiting for my oat ceremon, then passport then I'm off to Naija too. Already following.

Could you digress and include some "flashbacks"( Nollywood style) of how you came to America and how you became a citizen and the journey. Job prospects then also the story of you visiting home now and it all seems strange to you lol.

Thanks

My first night was not so great .. I could not sleep .. the noise was terrible .. so I checked into the nearest hotel - close to Shoprite Ikeja. Ate at Ocean basket ..reminds me of Red Lobster in Chicago. The crowd at Ikeja Mall was too much. Chilled with friends at King-size and La Mango in GRA. - I only had 10 days to spend.

Ok let's talk about Uber... My UberApp gave me Naira cash option. I Uber everywhere - the cars though ..lol. it's only in Naija I always have to explain where I am going to Uber driver. However it was all fun.

BA is not any better with customers service towards Nigerians on routes from Heathrow to Lagos.
