Hi, everyone, am tobi from ogun state, a tall guy in his early twenties, I'm a stammerer from birth but recently i have been noticing that it's been getting worse, I can't talk anymore in public without the fear of embarrassing myself.

Everytime am on the net, searching for "How to stop Stammering" but up till now, no improvement, I have tried all method, but still no improvement, Each time I go out to buy something, I usually embarrass myself, sometimes I overhear people saying, is he deaf and dumb?

I have few friends I talk to regularly, they do understand but not everyone understands, it wasn't as bad as this early this year or in the middle of the year, I just can't explain, Usually I talk fast, but people advise me to calm down while talking but even though I try to calm down I still end up Stammering, am frustrated, nothing is working, its even leading me to suicidal thoughts, am just tired,

Ignore my typos, am just frustrated

Tobi, I understand your plight. I'm in my early twenties, a graduate of English, and a stammerer. oh! I forgot to add that I talk super fast..
I know how bad it is. not only does it cause low self esteem, it restricts your social life.
First, admit that's the way you are. that's self realisation.
Second, work towards overcoming that fear or phobia. Personally, I overcame my fear on 200L. I was elected the PRO of my department... Not funny! I stood in front of all Language and Literature students and addressed them. Gradually, I created confidence in myself. Tobi, you have greatness within you. Stammering or stuttering isn't a barrier. Imagine yourself speaking to a large crowd. don't mind what people would tell you. it'd only bring you down. avoid it!
Third, take your time to speak. don't rush words. take your time to pronounce voiced sounds. (b, d, g, etc)... Speak slowly, not too slow though. and most importantly, no one should complete words for you. my siblings are used to completing words for me. I warned them to stop. if possible, rehearse your words before you speak them.
Fourth, visit a language or speech therapist. you can them for free online. or if possible, download Oral Ai application on your android device. it helped me.
Fifth, pray about it. Tell God you don't want it. I know of people who were born a stammerer but God changed it. a good example is Benny Hinn.
Tobi, there is no magic pill that can stop stammering (drugs)

Tolu

I recently saw a clip on similar issue on Steve show lately. A lady in this case had requested for way out, just as you have asked here. Anyway, here is the suggestion that Steve ( a former Stammer from birth and now a great TV show presenter) gave her.

He requested her to say everything sentences internally 3 times before voicing it out. Saying it three times help to stabilized the mood of the speaker and they on the fourth time, you are audible and clear without Stuttering or stammering. Also, avoid looking at anyone in the face while speak for now cause this in a way causes some form of fear in you. You can look else where and as you get better at it, you can choose to maintain eye contact much better to gain more confidence when you speak.

I am glad you said you have some friends who understand you very well. You can have them stay behind you while you face a mirror and have them ask you questions while you practices this internalization speech three times before voice it out. Constant practice it key towards gaining mastery over any task or situation in life.

I wish you the very best and sure hope you get better and that Stuttering issue becomes a thing of the past in your life. Be of good cheer, you are more than a conqueror.

I have good news for you.

Background:

I have been stammering for the past 40years. I can still remember my neighbors laughing at me when i was 3years old because i wasn't as fluent as my younger cousin.

But that's all part of what makes me me. With my stammering I got a job with one of the top 4 audit firms, left to join a top oil servicing company. That's to say I was interviewed, passed the interview, and now working effectively with people. I am a c-suit manager.

The background is to encourage you that your stammering/ stuttering cannot limit you if you don't allow it to.

My suggestions on how to manage your stuttering

These are the few ways i have learnt to manage the stuttering:

1. Have a good idea of what you want to say before you say it
2. Deliberately start speaking slowly - starting from the very first syllable. If you don't feel weird and uncomfortable doing this, then you are not doing it well
3. Carefully enunciate each syllable of every word you speak i.e. make every part of the word distinct e.g. po-pu-lar.
4. Try to have even amount of space between each word and syllable e.g. "po-pu-lar" not "po......pular"
4. Learn to breath while speaking

These are the exercises I suggest

a. Do at least four 2minutes audio recording of yourself everyday talking about different things. Then listen to the recordings and do the needed adjustments
b. Do at least five 1minute video recordings of you trying to market or convince people to buy a product or something. Observe your facial expressions and correct as required.

This should be done for the next 60days until it becomes a part of you.

The sky is the limit (and still remember to pray to God to order your steps).

All the best

Warley overcame stuttering and shows us in the whatsapp brazilian group how he got it .. he never did speech therapy treatment, he elaborated by himself methods that helped him improve his voice and overcome stuttering by 95 percent ... I will post Some tips here, I have already used it myself and realized that they help you speak better yes, they have not totally solved my stuttering, but they help unlock the blocks .. try and see if they are useful to you ..

1 - Tighten your belly when you notice that it will lock in a word, this causes you to take the tension off the vocal chords and transfer to the diaphragm, leaving the vocal organ free.

2- When speaking, feel that you are blowing a small ember on a piece of straw! You only have that ember, you can not blow strong but she extinguishes, if you blow too little it will also erase, blow with affection and in the right dose, do it with your words too.

3 - reading 10 minutes a day with a pencil crossed in the mouth see in the photo ... serves to strengthen the tongue it seems that those who have stuttering have soft flaccid tongue, this helps to strengthen it and with this improves verbal fluency ..

4- Use a belt around the chest similar to what the macguire method uses but the latter uses towards the ribs ... helps in breathing ..

5 - Always do diaphragmatic breathing.

6 - daily exercise of voice imposition, inspire and speak the vowels in a single time until the air ends ... make one vowel at a time ... serves to make the voice stronger and to release it ... in general almost all Speak to "inside".

7-- THIS LAST IS A MY TIP THAT I USED AND HELPED ME ...

10-minute daily reading with the d.a.f. (Delayead auditory feedback) download in google play store, it only works with the headphone connected in the mobile .....

8- talk on whatsap in front of the mirror so you can see where and how it hangs and you can go fix yourself ...

Can post in the comments tips exercises that worked with you do as he ... share what they have learned in fact and worked with you ...

As he said this was how he overcame the stuttering ... if it will help someone just know if you try it .. he will be happy if what he learned help someone else in the world!

Put it into practice after giving your testimony here ... and encourage others to improve their verbal fluency .. and 'possible many have achieved the difference between them and you? Practically none .... we only have bad news in Brazil, let's do our part here, trying to improve the life of some Brazilians .. this is a chain of well .. whatsapp group leave your number .. let's brothers brothers.

Facebook group several tips there

I remembered the tip of the varley he overcame stuttering or as some speak he healed ...

speak without charge. TECHNIQUE ZERO COLLECTION, talk the way you can. No technique at all. Stutter stammered ..

MANY TIMES FOR TRYING NOT TO GAG OR HIDE THE GAGUEIRA STUTTER IS THAT WE TRAIL ...
and when trying to hide the stuttering we sent a message to the brain and subconscious that we have difficulty speaking and we get more tense ...

This technique works with me many times.

maybe it will work with someone else here. EXPERIENCE NOW .. MAKE AN AUDIO AND SEND TO SOME FRIENDS ... SPEAKING WITHOUT USING ANY TECHN ..

GAGUEJAR stuttering THAT DANE ..
Re: My Stammering Issue Is Depressing Me by madenigga2dcore(m): 6:14pm On Dec 21, 2018
Overcoming stuttering is more a matter of losing the fear of stuttering than striving to speak better.
Do you agree?
Re: My Stammering Issue Is Depressing Me by madenigga2dcore(m): 6:19pm On Dec 21, 2018
take advantage of times when they have a better verbal fluency and speak as much as possible. this causes our brain, our subconscious mind, to see that we have the ability to speak fluently then in future moments when you speak. that voice that says "you can not talk well" is getting weak and shut up, this can be fast or it can be time consuming. it depends on the history of each one.

fact is: enjoy moments when you are speaking fluently and speak a lot and in every possible opportunity!

use the "useful, true or loving word" filter. if what you are going to say fill one of these 3 qualities. speak and talk a lot

I hope this tip will help you a lot as you help me to this day.

Do you stammer:
1. When you are talking to yourself?
2. When you are reading a book?
3. When you are singing to yourself?

At this point, I have to comment.

I was going to create a thread like this, but I'm glad someone stepped up. Personally, I don't feel bad about it anymore. I have gotten used to alot of embarrassment especially with impatient people. But because I'm starting to get used to it doesn't mean it's okay. No, it's definitely not!.

I'm in my late 20s, stuttering/stammering is in my family (like, maternal and paternal). But non of my parents stutter, but I and my siblings stutter at varying degrees, mine is worse.

I speak better and more confidently around people I know very well, (I can almost not stutter when with bar), but when I'm red with anger, all bets are off grin grin.

When I talk to myself, I don't stutter.
When I read aloud to myself, I don't stutter.
When I sing to myself, maybe with headphones on, I feel like a rockstar, not even a trace of stuttering.

Back then in school, seminars, IT defence and final year project defence was a disaster back to back. But I got an A in A, I feel like they pitied me, and I still not like the idea. I hate when people complete my sentences for me.

For me, part of my new year resolution is/will be to make plenty offline friends (exp with ladies), the more the better.

To my stammering brethren exp those who stutter from birth, people who don't stutter won't really feel our pain. They will be like "breathe, calm down, don't rush, talk slowly et al", it's not as easy as it sounds o. The thing sometimes is like a chain reaction, one minute you will think you have gotten the hang of it, and the next you are like choking on some consonant sound cheesy grin.

Lastly, live free and talk as much as you can. Cheers!!!

I am glad you seem to be on top of the situation. Your answer to those questions are an indication that stammering is your reaction to the factors outside of you. It has very little to do with you and more to do with your assumed perception of your audience. Steve Harvey has some decent hints on how to tackle the challenge. Search online for a short video he did on one of his shows. Summary of it goes like this:
1. Do not rush into saying anything
2. Say whatever you want to say to yourself at heart 3 times before saying it out loud.
3. So if I ask you how your day has been and your planned answer is "it's been a good day", be sure to recite that to yourself in your mind 3 times before saying it out loud.
4. Practice this all the time for several weeks and it will gradually become part of you. I can only assume it works. Good luck
4. Do not be in a hurry to respond. Let them wait. If your audience is impatient, they can buzz off.
