In Ontario now, if u or ur parent(s) makes 50k or less, ur undergraduate education is free

naijaman3:

Hmmn, I don’t know how you are doing your math. It looks to me that 7M Naira (or about CAD $25,000) per annum in Nigeria will be equivalent to maximum CAD $50,000 (or 14M Naira) in Canada taking tax and cost of living into consideration.

Your math is off because you did not take into consideration a lot of other things that you will spend money on while living in Nigeria but you don’t spend money on them in Canada. Some of the other things are:

Elementary and Secondary Education: In Canada, world class quality education is free from kindergarten to the end of high school. However, in Nigeria you know what you have to pay per term for schools that are not even as good as the free ones here in Canada.

Health and Medical: In Canada, you get this for free. However, in Nigeria you know what you have to pay for medical treatment at all the death center you call hospital. It is so bad that your yeyebrity (celebrity) that are believed to be making more than 7M Naira per annum run to social medial looking for help to cover hospital bills when they are sick.

Unemployment Benefit: If you lose your job in Canada due to no fault of yours you are entitled to government paid employment payment for between 14 weeks to 45 weeks. This is in additional to whatever severance pay that your company will pay you. What do you get from government in Nigeria if you lose your job due to no fault of yours? Nothing.

Government Pension: In additional to pension you get from your employer when you retire; you also get government paid pension monthly in Canada when you retire (You don’t need to work for the government to get this). What do you get from government in Nigeria when you retire? Nothing.

Old Age Security Payment: In Canada if you are 65 years and above you get paid Old Age Security payment irrespective of whether you have worked or never worked all your life. What do you get from government in Nigeria when you are old? Nothing.

You can argue that all of the above are not free because the government uses our tax to cover for these expenses. This is why our tax is a little high. But in Nigeria since you do not pay high taxes like we pay and you still need all of the above basic needs you have to pay for them or plan for them by yourself from your 7M Naira annual income. So, if you add high tax to your Canadian expenses, you also need to add the cost of all of the above to your Nigerian expenses.

Apart from the above items covered by our taxes, there are a couple of other items below that are extremely expensive in Nigeria compared to Canada:

Generator Running Expenses: Despite paying your NEPA bill, your power is not stable or not available at all. Hence you run your generator. In Canada, I don’t have to run a generator to live so the cost is zero. What is the cost of this per month or per year in Nigeria?

Tokunbo Car: The tokunbo car that you buy for about 2.24M Naira (CAD $8,000) in Nigeria will only cost me about CAD $2000 (N560,000 Naira) in Canada.

University and College Education: In Canada my kids have the following options available tom then in financing their education without me as a parent paying anything (government tuition grant not to be paid back, academic scholarship, part time work while schooling etc). In addition, they also get tax refund from tution and books etc but in Nigeria parents have to spend their live savings sending kids to the university.

There are more but I stop here for now!

Taking all of the above, all other cost of living and taxes into consideration, I would say that 7M Naira (or about CAD $25,000) per annum in Nigeria will be equivalent to maximum CAD $50,000 (or 14M Naira) in Canada.

Think about the sane environment country like Canada will offer you. Think about the life of Op children which supersede money.

As far as he is with his permanent resident visa, he needs no soothe sayer to tell him to stay back in Nigeria. Couple with the fact that he will also get his citizenship in five years time after arrival, is enough reason to make such move.
citizenship is in 3 years

Patronising olosho in Canada would land you in trouble with the police, so it's better that your body be firewood. It is illegal in Canada, and police often carry out sting operations to catch suspects.

However, the law will only prosecute the buyer of olosho services, and the olosho would be let go.
A conviction would make you inadmissible to Canada; hence, PR would be cancelled followed by prompt deportation. If you are a citizen, jail term and job loss is guaranteed.

But then, most Nigerians still got their mentality messed up so........

In general Canada is good for kids and young men of 21 to 29 years. If you a man and u are above 30 and u are earning 7M, please stay in Nigeria. Canada has been set up such that 50% of ur earnings stays in Canada, that's taxes of 50%. Someone says you can earn $150k I laugh, that salary role is for CIO or senior executives. Guys before u reach that level here it may take a while. I was telling some one yesterday if I get commissioner role in my state in Nigeria. I will leave my family here in Canada. In Canada lots of people work just to pay Bill's and are indebted. Again Canada is good for young men and kids as well as women. Opportunities are in Canada, however if you are doing very well in Nigeria u can move ur family to Canada. Whilst u hustle in Nigeria as a man, with a strong agreement with ur wife before leaving.

People who are Physicians, Pharmacist and are doing high skilled medical professional jobs in Canada make about $100k or even more.

I don't know where to start from in my reply to this your write-up. Your write-up contains information that is purely your own opinion which I respect and will not be commenting on. On the other hand, I will be commenting on the information (the part in bold above) in your write-up that just is just plainly wrong.

To start with, what you wrote up there about people not being able to make a meager $150K (yes, meager $150K, I repeat) unless you are a CIO or senior executives is an irony. It is irony because you were the same person that wrote on the other thread complaining that Nigerians are negative people because when you came to Canada, Nigerians you met in Canada were telling you that you can can not get a professional job. That the job you will get is support worker and that no Nigerian spoke positively to your life.

Link to your write-up on the other thread: https://www.nairaland.com/3617393/living-canada-life-canadian-immigrant/503#74341506
My comments to you on the other thread: https://www.nairaland.com/3617393/living-canada-life-canadian-immigrant/504#74342262

How is your statement about not being possible to make meager $150K unless you are a CIO or senior executives any different from the statement of people not speaking positively to your life? Please reflect on this.

Take this from me when I tell you that it is not only very possible but it is also very common to make $150K and more even as an individual contributor talk less of being in management roles (entry level, mid level or senior level). A lot of people I know are making this much and more in individual contributor roles. Just like I said on the other thread you just have to mingle with the right people to know and experience what I am talking about.

To give you more insight, read my second post here on Nairaland about Six Sigma Black Belt career and how much people in that career make. This was back in 2006. So, figure out what the salary will look like now in 2019 (12 to 13 years after that post).

The post is available here: https://www.nairaland.com/10173/six-sigma-black-belt-career#279221

When you now consider many people are IT professionals, Professional Engineers, Doctors, Pharmacist, Finance people etc working in wide rage of industries such as automotive, investment baking, technology, IT, oil & gas etc making such amount as individual contributors you will understand what I am talking about.

I do agree and understand that a lot of people in the professions mentioned above are also not making that much but this fact does not negate the fact that many people are making such money and more as individual contributors.

Now regarding 50% taxation in Canada, it is obvious you do not know how the tax system works in Canada. Canada tax system is graduated whereby you pay different percentage tax rate on different portion of your salary. This is different from a flat tax rate whereby you pay the same percentage tax rate on all of your salary. I will encourage you educate yourself about Canadian tax system.

You can also follow the link below to get an idea of the percentage of your income you pay in tax depending on the province you live in:

https://www.taxtips.ca/marginaltaxrates.htm

You can also use the calculator below to give you an idea the amount of tax a person making $150K will pay depending on their province of residence:

https://simpletax.ca/calculator

As an example, if that person lives in Alberta, s/he will pay $29,007 in federal tax and $13,201 in provincial tax. This is a total of $42,208 (or just 28.14%). If we factor in CPP and IE Premiums (which are really not taxes), the person will pay a total of $45,660 or just 30.44%.

Beautyaddy:

You are very correct. In fact, just like I already mentioned above you do not even need to be a Physician to make $100K and more. Even nurses (including Nigerian Nurses) make that much ($100K) and more.

You are kind of right about not bothering to reply @GodbPraised post, but I replied him for two reasons:

First, I was sick to the stomach reading his write-up doing exactly the same thing he was accusing other Nigerians he met when he just arrived in Canada. He is saying something is not attainable when it is attainable. On the other hand, he complaint and did not like it when other people told him that he could not get professional job when he sure could. I wanted him to see how he is exhibiting the same behaviour as the people he was complaining about.

Secondly, just like you said people who pass wrong information like he did, while they themselves are already in Canada, are in my mind just trying to discourage people whose life will be better off here in Canada from migrating legally. I do not like it when people who want to migrate legally are being discouraged by being fed wrong information.

I hope my write-up will encourage legal migrants that they can make it with proper planning and by mingling with the right set of people.

This is the more reason I have embarked on the PR journey and so far am closer to Canada than Nigeria even though am still in naija but am existing in utopia, a more perfect Canadian world.

I can't imagine having to live and serve a country like naija and still need to beg for help on social media at my old age.

Imagine parents spending there last on there children only to want to look up to them when they graduate hoping that they will get a good job but the children have to face evil reality of joblessness in naija eventually been frausrated not been able to cater for themselves let alone the parents. eventually the parent will be more poorer than they anticipated.

A country where I won't have to worry about school fee for my children for the first 14 years of their lives is worth trying.

Talking about tax, when you pay ur tax for certain facilities and amenities and u are really enjoying it I see no need to complain. U pay Nepa bill here in naija and also run generator simultaneously, u are doing yourself thinking u dey form big boy all because u collect 7M per annum. The stress of having to pull, polluting the air with toxic fumes from the general or kick start and some will even invest heavily on solar and inverter out of the 7M o just because u wanna cave a niche for yourself....

Here u work and get paid as at when due per hour if u wanna hustle and ur work hour tallies with ur pay. No salary delay, no outrageous security challenge, like robbery and kidnapping cos u struggle to buy Tokunbo Benz and people think u have arrived, no rushing at bus terminal like we have in Oshodi when the conductor have to open his smelly armpit over your head to collect fair.

Even, just and exposed society and people where nobody cares whether u trek with ur God given legs or u cruise on a 2019Range Rover sport.

I will like to take my chances going to Canada and am so dead sure I won't regret it. Will come back here to share my Landing gist soon and my progress in Canada. Can't imagine my child going through the same suffering I went thro in naija where u only get job by having to know people and not considering u base on your level of competence and experience.

Been working in Naija since I left university and no employer is even interested in the fact that I have a 2-1, all they ask of is who refers u here, are u computer literate as if everybody should study computer science.... Abegi

On the average: 150k per annum in canada is like $100,000 after tax, gov pension and EI. About 8,300 per month. Mortgage of say $2300 per month. Left with $6000.
Expenses on food, bills, entertainment, gas, professional dues, life insurance, finance etc $2500k to $3000.. Still remains about $3000 to $3500 savings.

That is like 9million naira per year. Your calcs were kind of close. While a lot of people will not earn close to 150k in Canada over their lifetime as that pushes them into the may be top 5% of the society; however, what money can't buy you in Nigeria is peace of mind. I can't quantify that. I would take $50k per year in Canada just for that reason over 20 million per annum in Nigeria.

Salford and naijaman3, i respect both top notch analysis. You guys are genius and sound in your analysis. My advice to people as always been do your due diligence and what makes you happy. If your goal in life is to live in a country with human right and social security, Naija will never give you that but if you are doing fine in Nigeria and your goal is to be an economic migrant in Canada, you might be depressed as an economic migrant. To me, earning 7M in Naija does not worth it except if you are earning above 20M per annum and your goal is to be an economic migrant, you might be depressed if you migrate to Canada and leave such job. So life is all about cost benefits analysis and trade offs. For someone like me, i will always choose financial security over social security as that is what makes me happier and kindly note we are not hardwired the same way. Its a capitalist mentality and thats why people will go to war torne countries to invest for the sole purpose of profit margins. For example, i am working in Middle East as a Pet Engineer but unfortunately majority of us even Canadians, Americans and co lobbied to be posted to war torn countries due to location coefficient. Imagine if you work in the likes of Luanda, Iraq and co, you get 1.7 coefficient of your salary unlike working in USA, Canada and co. Whereas we have others that will tell you, i dont care about the money, i care more about my life and good environment even if i earn less. In conclusion, there is no cap fit all for people, we are all hardwired differently.
