Akata Planning To Relocate To Nigeria by MrAkata: 7:58am On Jan 03, 2019
As the title suggest I am an Akata. I intend to relocate temporarily for various reasons. I basically would like to explore different opportunities and build a network in Nigeria. I have a background in IT and was considering enrolling in an University to further my studies and build a social network. I was wondering are Nigerian degrees recognized in America or would it be a waste of time ? I have a decent knowledge of IT and programming mostly self taught and certs. I am not too considered w/ school but rather the network it would provide.

I also have done some limited research and was torn between Lagos and Abuja. I am wondering which area would better suit my interest. I understand Abuja is more affluent but Lagos is a commercial hub with a lot going on. Im not timid or scared , I've lived in NY in rough parts so high density areas of black people do not intimidate me ( Im no tough guy ,either). What I am not interested in are any forms of "pan africanism" or any village experiences and wearing dashiki's ( no disrespect ) I just find those type of endeavors a waste of time and laughable. I've been to Ghana and did not enjoy it because of that reason . Too much emphasis on " cultural " shit , I respect African culture and can appreciate it , but it is yours . I do not seek to be something I am not. Too much tribalism and other political bullshit only confuses me and Im too old 4 that shit. My ONLY purpose in being in Nigeria is purely economical . I don't have time to waste on endeveours which will add no value to my life or the people i come in contact with.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback which I could take into consideration b4 making my move. I intend to travel there by March for 2 weeks just to touch the ground 1st b4 I make a decision. I tried searching YouTube but all of the Akata youtubers seem to be naive clowns to me so I take their opinions w/ "a grain of salt" as far as NIgeira.

I dont mean to come off disrespectful because I hold Nigerians in high esteem its just rather the narrative of the returning Akata which I hold in disdain. I don't want to be confused w/ some lost puppy looking to return and find his long lost culture and heritage. I have a culture and background o my own ( carribbean descent) so I can appreciate yours as I hold onto mines.

I dont believe in pan africanism.

Straight to the point.

Nigeria is full of opportunities. Nigeria degree is not recognised in the US.
Your programming cert will help. Many top programmers in Nigeria are self taught. If you are an expert you might teach wannabes for cash

are you a junior or senior developer? We dont have many senior developer in Nigeria. Look up for andela and apply for programing jobs there. They pay local rate.

Gather a list of startups in Nigeria with good funding and start applying.

Lagos is the king and the market, so lagos will be the place to live, work and make money

have enough money saved for survival.

Nobody will know you are american except when you speak

I have to comment on this post...lol.
It is seriously hilarious..lol.
So much to say here..where to begin?
"Mr. Akata"?...lol.
I gain more and more enjoyment off of that word...and that's from one fellow "half-akata" to a "full" one wink
I actually love using the word! I learned it from this site and have been using it ever since.
Anyhow, just a few questions for you...if you don't mind.
So you are a Black American looking to temporarily relocate to Nigeria strictly for financial reasons...?
You are not interested in the culture...just purely economical? Really?
Why Nigeria..if I may ask?
Do you plan on taking some oil and running out of the country

You also asked if, "Nigerian degrees are accepted in America?"
But I thought you are an "akata" relocating from America to Nigeria? So the question would be are American degrees accepted in Nigeria? Correct?
Or are you planning to relocate to Nigeria, enroll in a university there, and then relocate back to America with that Nigerian degree?? That would not make sense to me though.
You also said that you found the "akata" Youtubers to be jokes basically...lol. How many have you viewed? What were they talking about? Was it in regards to relocating to or visiting Nigeria?
Umm....alrighty then.
Honestly (and I could be wrong), BUT you don't sound like an "akata" at all.
No person of the Black American race (and please re-read those 3 former words) would relocate to an unfamiliar country and just jump in "head-first" purely for economic reasons and disregard the culture.....
Perhaps other races would....due to power and strong economic means.
You neither disregard nor disrespect an unfamiliar country....when visiting. How could you ignore the way in which a country functions (government, culture, religion etc)?
It wouldn't hurt you to wear some clothing or visit a particular service her and there I guess.
If they aren't trying to religiously convert you, force you to join a particular political party or join their particular tribe, then what's the problem?
I get the part of not wanting to get involved in tribalism and politics..but seems to me that you would need to know the background of a country...such as to why so much tribalism and religious separation exists and how you (as a business person) could maneuver around that. I don't see how you could ignore or avoid that.
Perhaps I'm missing something? Please help me out here.

Anyhow, it just seems questionable that an alleged "akata" would be subtlety throwing "digs" at his own...and on a foreign website.
That's embarrassing and makes you look ignorant (with all due respect).
Yes..."akatas" have their faults (as do all racial and ethnic groups), but that's not enough reason to trash them.
I could be totally wrong though and would be totally willing to render a sincere apology if I am proven wrong.
Sorry so lengthy...

I appreciate your reply and I would consider myself a junior dev but have the capabilities of a mid level - upper network engineer. I prefer working on networks and just recently have been delving into Web Development. I never thought o it but I believe that joining a start up would be good idea. I am not interested in NIgeria wages 4 the most part. Any work I take on would be probably be more voluntary based . I don't intend to come travel this far to find a job . The idea of teaching locals is also something I can definitly do. I have many books and old routers which I use when taking my CCNP which I could set up and let them lab with. I also have friends in the states who have more formal training than me who could also.

I have a substantial savings and I also have the ability to work remote so money wont be an issue. When looking for housing , I heard that foreigners should be ready to pay 1 year rent upront. Is this standard on most properties ?

Thank u
Re: Akata Planning To Relocate To Nigeria by Nobody: 8:43pm On Jan 03, 2019
I do not know alot about network engineering market in Nigeria but i know the market is hot and their is demand especially in installations and setting up network systems. if you want to start a business doing that.you will have to register a company, list your services, print a business card and go out and meet small businesses and sell them what you have.

For apartment. You need to determine where you wanna live. the island or mainland.

For rent. We all pay in advance(foreigners inclusive). One year or two years depending on the landlord and contracts. Go with a trustworthy nigerian when renting apartment.

Wow , its so much in this post and I dont know where to start. The fact you generalize Black Americans in one narrow minded sense is what really pisses me of. You assume I am " throwing digs " which makes me look ignorant , is your opinion. The fact is it is not digs , its my opinion and my experiences. I am not throwing digs at ALL my people just that small MINORITY who in my opinion are naive and lost fools (not all) Me moving to Africa thinking EVERYBODY is my long lost brother and we will drink palm wine and I will some how be reconnected w/ my "Roots" is laughable. It would be the same as a Nigerian moving to Atlanta or Harlem believing they will automatically be accepted and their life will be like a rap video. NO , they would get ROBBED being naive.

I have an Associate already from the past . I was just exploring the idea of going to a University to continue my BA while I was there. Since I dont know anybody I figured a University would be the ideal place to build a social network. I dont intend on just walking the streets approaching random people. There arent many Youtubers in Nigeria except some guy named Uhuru . I find his content PERSONALLY a waste of time. He travels to each African country and pretends to be from a different tribe each time. One time he was a Muslim in Senegal then he's in some village in Nigeria participating in voodoo rituals. That is DEFINITELY not what I intend to be doing.

The fact that u believe only other races are capable of relocating for economical reasons I find disrespectul . If White Americans and Indians can relocate 4 economical reasons , why cant black americans ?? I know the media and youtube only represent Black Americans as being some type of oppressed and incapable group begging 4 acceptance but we are not. At least not ALL of us. I have been traveling since I was a child and have ties to other countries because as I mentioned I am of Caribbean descent but was born in the states. So maybe I am of the minorities of blacks who have traveled outside of America and dont believe the hype o America being the "end all , be all" greatest place on earth.

U strike me as very ignorant "Do you plan on taking some oil and running out of the country" I dont believe u are Nigerian by saying some stupid shit like that. U sound more like a British or American NIgerian who thinks like a white man who u hold in high esteem. NIgeria has one of the biggest economies in the world and the biggest market in Africa . So why wouldnt a Black American see it as an opportunity and consider relocating there ?? I have a skill set and a strong network in America so I just want to see would I be able transfer them to Nigeria and make money. Even something as simple as selling barbecue ( example , i dont cook ) I am into IT now but I've done construction and can operate almost any heavy duty equipment. I have friends who fix and sell tractors and other equipment. I have access to auction license in America and have bought and sold cars so my intentions have nothing to do w/ oil.

As far as culture and politics , I stand on my response. I have no problem learning and understanding other peoples cultures but Nigeria is too confusing to me. I do not SEE the difference between a Yoruba , Igbo or Hausa I see them all the same. I do not want to be involved in the cultural differences between each group . That is for you people to dwell on , and I respect it , I just dont want to be involved in it. Whatever culture I encounter I will look it at all the same and just do not want to be bombarded and consumed w/ the nuances of them. I respect everybody and respect all cultures , If I went to China I would not try to be a Buddhist . So I wont go to Nigeria and pretend to be Yoruba , that is what I mean , if it makes sense to u. As far as politics is concerned Im burnt out on American politics so y would I burden myself w/ Nigerian politics ? I would allow whoever I befriend to make all political decisions on my behalf. If it doesn't involve paying off some local politician to do my biddings I have no interest in who is in power. ( I feel the same about America)

Well....I want to say so much. My apologies...I didn't think you were an akata the further along I read.
But so you say...so I'm sorry.
Let me just say this: when I was saying other racial groups would go to Nigeria and have no true interest in the country but rather just pillage from it, that was what I was saying I was hoping you were not doing.
By you saying that you don't care about anything in the country BUT money, that was what I was saying was ignorant.
You saw 1 YouTube akata and made a generalization about "several" akatas.
I am a Black American/Nigerian...
I hold white, black, purple and green people all in high esteem...simply because they are "humans".
Just so you know: Although they are all under the umbrella of Nigeria...they are NOT all the same people. They have many different tribal groups, many languages and practice different religions...which affects how their country is governed.
I'm not sure that it's as easy as saying..."All I want to do is business here in this country." "Leave all that other stuff out of it."
Also, I would never want you to pretend to be someone you are not....but news flash: I bet some of your ancestry dates back to Nigeria. Black Carribeans share similar "dna" with west Africans.
Sir, I was asking you these questions cause some of what you said was confusing.
I knew you would get hostile, but it's okay.
Wasn't my intention to get you so angry.

Thanks for clarifying "some" of my questions.
All the best for your travels there. Perhaps you may decide to stay permanently.

I can smell your attitude from a distance as AA or West Indian. You cannot make it anywhere In the West Indies, USA or Africa.

Go back to school and learn some manners preferably in one of the historical black colleges.

Now I understand u though , U are African American . You have adopted the same talking points of these African Americans in America.
That whole colonizer and oppressor talk is why I dont watch MOST black american Youtubers. It is tiring and counterproductive. One reason I favor Nigerians is because most I know do not entertain that mindset . Most Nigerians I know in America are all about productivity and trying to make money . You seem to have that "pan african " mindset I try to avoid. I embrace the ideals of pan Africanism but most American Pan Africans I came across are not into progression and productivity but talking . I have known "Pan Africans" since the 80's and those same people have not "moved a stone" in Africa.

Respect to you brother and do not be so critical of people who look like you . We tend to be extra critical of people who look like us , which is discouraging and why some choose to do nothing.

Actually I don't ascribe to "pan-Africanism".
I just believe in showing respect for anyone's country that I enter and am unfamiliar with.
I would expect foreigners to do the same when they enter our country (although I know that the main reason (for many) to come to the U.S. is to try and build a more stable, productive, and financially secure life.)
I can't "knock" that.
Perhaps I have a bias of sort...a soft heart for Nigeria..a country I have yet to step foot in... (it's coming though)...and have been trying to know about vicariously through this site.
I have direct descent to Nigeria through my Nigerian dad...so this is very personal for me (as I've stated a million times on N.L).
He's told me some things...but it's just not enough.
Trust me, I've had every single reason to leave this site....but I just won't do it.
I get what you are saying now...it just "sounded" (at first) like you didn't care about the country as a whole. It also sounded like you were degrading our fellow akatas.
I was trying to somehow bridge the gap between Black Americans and Nigerians...cause if you haven't seen it yet...they have a deep distaste for akatas and have made it very and plainly known here on N.L. too many times to count.
There is a tension so thick....that i wonder what it would take to eradicate it?
Sorry for the judgment on you.
I love my Black Americans (hence why I questioned you)...and I'm trying to get to know my other side...Nigerians (so I can love them too).
Blessings to you..
P.S. I'm a sister...

reading this, just made me pissed off, i dont want to sound rude but then again this is a ridiculous piece, in my opinion you are just strong on the pan African idea even though you deny that you dont believe in it. subconsciously you do.

if you use this forum to judge Nigerians then i guess you are making a big mistakes, for the most part of it, nigeria is a multicultural country, there are almost 250-300 ethnic groups in Nigeria, we marriage each other everyday, many families here are mixed, tribalism is not a problem especially if you stay in big cities

you need to understand Nigeria and its tribalism, it is not brutal but based on identity, i was born on this land and i need to have access to opportunities before any strangers does but that doesnt mean a stranger cant create his own luck, he can.

you think Nigerians hate African- american aka AKATA, Many Nigerians do not know that word,on this forum, (the word is popular in the travel section) we dont care if you are an african-american or from the carribeans but we will sure ask you where you are from when we hear your foreign accent and invite you home to look cool.

The only Nigerian that call African-americans AKATA are those that immigrate to the US but guess what, some of these same people when they come back home wanna speak and behave like african-americans(hypocrisy)

Miss, open your mind and try to be positive, just because your father told you some negative stuff doesnt mean it is true, his generation is different from ours, i dont care about MR AKATA purpose in Nigeria, as long as it is productive, he is welcome, he doesnt have to care about the culture but just respect it and he will be welcomed and invited to many homes.

i personally when abroad do not care about other people culture, i am there for a purpose and once i achieve my purpose, i move on, that is how life is suppose to be, we cant change the mistakes of the past but accept it and try to make sure it doesn't occur again.

Many African americans do not understand the word Pan africanism and African unite, many africans wont subscribe to that, you do not expect me to leave my culture, way of life and language and start speaking swahilli like a slowpoke, pan africanism is just another form of colonisation that what most people do not understand. lets accept our differences in cultures and way of life and bring different ideas on the table to move us forward.

In conclusion, i laugh when many african- american shout china is doing these and that in africa, what they dont understand is that they are helping the western world spread their message of "Africa is for Europe any country coming to africa for business need to be destroyed by propaganda, we are losing grip of our former colonies , the Chinese are getting influential and we must do all means to stop them" unknowingly to many African- american they are spreading the former slave masters message. I laugh when i watch many african-americans youtubers pread that, to them and their viewers that are making sense, to people that understand foreign policies, hstory and international trade, they are saying rubbish.

China is the only country that has treated Africans equallly and like grown up adult, the west has always treated africans like babies, who cant think for themselves, that is why they love the pan african idea and african unite agenda so that when they achieved all these, they can control africans from the comfort of their bed.

MrAkata:

Blessing 2 u Brothers

Judging from your right up you may not be mentally ready for Nigeria my "Akata" brother. If your whole mindset of coming to Nigeria it "economical' then you better come as other economically minded "Oyinbo" people come, with plenty of cash and an already established business or Idea as you seek to exploit the country. If not you are wasting your time.

Many a Nigerian who are returnees have attempted what you are seeking and a very little percentage find what they are looking for.

I would suggest you come and get a goo feel of the country as a tourist, learn the ins and outs and the two cities you are attempting to do "business', make contacts and go back and then re-evaluate.

As for your "Pan African" comment, understand that all black culture are inter-connected from the Caribbean to the Seychelle islands so rather than hightlight the differences, use the similarities to your advantage. You don't have to ear Dashiki's or pray to Olodumare to accomplish that.

i think you need to read his write up he said he is coming to understand the country first.

so what is wrong for a black man to come to Nigeria for purely economical reasons? there are people doing it but they are low key.

I read his write up more than once.

There is nothing wrong with "anyone" let alone a "black" man coming to Nigeria to explore business opportunities, he will not be the first nor the last.

I gave him what I would consider reasonable advice being someone with good experience concerning the ins and outs of business in the country. Like I said it would be advisable for someone who has never visited the country to come in as a Tourist/Visitor, get a feel for the how the country works then begin to explore business contacts if he did not make any prior arrangements with such. Abuja is a good city to begin from then transition to Lagos which is much faster. He would be able to evaluate the pace of the the cities and see what works.

Comparing New York city to the hustle and bustle of Lagos Nigeria is like apple and oranges, they are no where near each other in any aspect you can imagine. Johannesburg is far more comparable to New York city in terms of pace, Lagos is not. (please take this from someone born and bred in the city of excellence.

Ther are several blogs on YouTube that can give you additional on sight information of the the country and how travelers navigate the cities and where are the best places to make business contacts in Lagos and Abuja

Lastly, Nigeria has its own culture and if one intends to do business there as a "black" American or Caribbean, one most be open minded and learn to adjust "culturally' without feeling like they are relinquishing their identity.

Black-Caribbeans/Americans are not Native Africans but the two groups are far more related culturally than say a Scandanavian to a Nigerian so he should use that to his advantage.

i understand your points but i think since he is going to the economy city (lagos) people really do not care about culture there like the rest of nigeria, Lagos is diverse and multicultural, the only culture they respect in lagos is MONEY

but anyway, i just think he should be ready mentally, and have the ability to live in an environment where he will actually have to create and provide his services for himself.

Lagos definitely has a culture and everything in the city is not money, there are certain nuisances that exist that must be understood.

For example try asking for directions to anywhere in Lagos from a person who is your elder and see if they don't scold you for not "greeting" them first before proceeding with your question regardless of if you a cruising in a benz or a taxi and come back let me know if Lagos indeed does not have a culture.

reading this, just made me pissed off, i dont want to sound rude but then again this is a ridiculous piece, in my opinion you are just strong on the pan African idea even though you deny that you dont believe in it. subconsciously you do
.

if you use this forum to judge Nigerians then i guess you are making a big mistakes, for the most part of it, nigeria is a multicultural country, there are almost 250-300 ethnic groups in Nigeria, we marriage each other everyday, many families here are mixed, tribalism is not a problem especially if you stay in big cities

you need to understand Nigeria and its tribalism, it is not brutal but based on identity, i was born on this land and i need to have access to opportunities before any strangers does but that doesnt mean a stranger cant create his own luck, he can.

you think Nigerians hate African- american aka AKATA, Many Nigerians do not know that word,on this forum, (the word is popular in the travel section) we dont care if you are an african-american or from the carribeans but we will sure ask you where you are from when we hear your foreign accent and invite you home to look cool.

Oh boy..
I just knew that there was absolutely "0" way that I could have a decent, informative, "angry-less", no tirade conversation.
Why are you so "pissed off"?
Unless you are the author of this thread, then your anger is ill-founded.
Try channeling that "pissed-off"-ness into something positive so that your blood pressure won't get so high.
You absolutely 1000 percent did not understand any of the conversation...clearly by your reply to me.

I, for 2 years, have been getting to know how your country operates (vicariously through N.L).
I have seen and read it all.
I don't need to judge Nigeria.
Its citizens do that for me.
Perhaps you should read through my 900 plus posts..to see how I've tried to be very impartial about many topics.
If I believed all Nigerians behave like the ones on this site, I would never ever want to visit.
But in spite OF...I still will visit.
Now let me ask you: do you know me personally?
Do you know my dad personally?
Have you listened in or been present at any conversation I've ever had with him pertaining to Nigeria?
If so, then you have a right to say he's spoken in a negative manner about his birth country...
If not, (which I know is the answer) then you should respectfully close your mouth boss.
Just so you know: he has a right IF/WHEN he wants.. to speak about his birth country to his child IF/WHEN he chooses... wink
Now on the use of the word "akata"...
What you have said is a lie from the deep pit of hell.
I learned about the word right here on this site...and actually having spoken by phone to a Nigerian nairalander (in Nigeria) who told me everything about the word.
I have seen that word so many times RIGHT HERE on N.L. that I can't count.
I saw the word in several sections....
It was not coming just from Nigerians in the diaspora either. Plenty of Nigerians (on the shores of Nigeria) use it freely and in a derogative manner.
So yes sir...Mr. Boss...Nigerians (home and abroad) are extremely familiar with the word

As far as pan-Africanism and China and whatever else you were fussing about, ok.
Believe and label me as you wish.
I was just saying to have some humanity and respect when travelling to other folks' country....
I do not discuss politics with anyone...be it America or Nigeria. It is too sensitive a topic...so you bringing up China...well congrats.
I have no problem with my Akata brother coming to Nigeria to do his business...and I made that known.
I will be visiting also...
I was confused about some things and therefore asked HIM.
Your problem is that you had an issue with nothing...other than you wanted an argument....
You interpreted my words the way you wanted to...so you could "light" into me.
Ok...hope you feel better Boss brother...
No hard feelings...
Blessings to you too

i dont want to argue with you and i dont have the time

on the issue of the word Akata, it seems you generalise alot, i myself do not understand the word AKATA and their are millions of Nigerians who do not understand it, also, from the word, it sounds yoruba and not every nigerian speaks or understands yoruba. as i have said earlier, you will hear the word from yoruba Nigerian immigrants in the US, here in Nigeria it is not a popular word and many people do not use it except maybe US returnee and i hardly hear them use that. i personally know how Nigerians exaggerate situations to feel cool or superior but this word Akata, many Nigerians do not know about it. as i have said before except US returnees. i am sure the nairalander you spoke with about the word, wanted to impress you, i am sure of that.

you do not know a lot about Nigeria, all your opinion about Nigeria are from this forum or some information online,if you keep using this forum to judge average Nigerian on the street, you will be surprised when you land in Nigeria, that it is a different ball game, that this forum does not represent millions of Nigerians opinion on african- americans. the reality is different from your own online formed opinion, i live in Nigeria and i rarely come across that word except on this forum.

Note: there are only 20 pages with the word AKATA out of about 10 million pages on Nairaland
and they are in sport, culture, celebrities, travel and politics, the bunch are in travel and culture)

Maybe you are talking about lagos of old. I still stand with my word, Lagos culture is MONEY, once you have money, respect will follow. you can treat people like shit and even become everybody friends, even your ELDERs, the police and your landlord will start calling you SIR,OGA. this is from personal experience, even your elder on the street will start hustling you for money, it will go like this "anything for me" etc.

i am sure you trying to show that we are a respectful bunch, i am sorry to tell you, it doesnt exist again in lagos again, once you have cash, the door is open for you.

I am sorry sister but I must agree with him about you. You whole argument was an " emotional " one rooted in Pan African ideals. I am so critical of "Pan Africanism" because it is something which is deeply rooted in my culture . I grew up surrounded by Pan Africans and come from a country with deep African roots. I am not Jamaican but of Caribbean descent and I come from Garifuna parents. If you have never heard of the Garifuna's we still to this day have our language which originated from West Africa . We were the slaves who broke away and have scattered through Central America and neighboring islands. I personally don't speak the language but some of my family does and 4 the most part it is a dying language and culture. This has shaped my country along w/ Reggae so Pan Africanism is nothing new to me . I grew up eating casava every thing. Casava Bread, Casava pudding Casava leaves before i ever stepped foot in Africa . We even eat a Fufu type dish made w/ plantains instead of casava. (HUDUT)

My experiences in America where I was born and raised was surrounded by West Indian immigrants. Primarily Jamaicans and Haitians who a large portion of which were Rastafarians . I have been studying with and surrounded by "Pan Africans" since the 90s , this is nothing new , but rather a resurgence for African Americans. Hailie Selassie put aside land in Ethiopia for "Pan Africans and Rastas" in the 1950's. That land has yet to be developed and no one is interested in actually getting off their ass and going. Instead they sit around EVERY GOD DAMN DAY talking about colonizers and Africa. It got tiring 4 me and I quickly became disillusioned .

Even with that being said I still understand you sister and do not look down on you. As a woman you will view the world different from me as a man. Women are more idealistic and emotional where a man "should" be practical and rational . This is why certain things don't bother me and I dont concern myself with other things. As a woman you are a looking 4 love and acceptance. As a man I am solely concerned w/ respect and building something 4 myself and children. Women have the luxury of optimism and believing they will meet some African prince and be treated like a Queen.
While I am burdened w/ the responsibility of facilitating these dreams and aspiration.

As far as the word AKATA I dont take offense to it..It is just a word , and does not effect me . I have never been oppressed and discriminated against by Nigerians. So u can not give the word the same connotation as NIGG@.There is no historic context of the word being used to subjugate me or my people , To me it is a joke . I find it actually funny to be honest. The reason being is because we got a word 4 Black Americans also. Its a word I grew up being called. Every culture has a word they use to address foreigners ,not just black americans and its not always in a positive connotation (nor negative) I am from a poor country known for tourism, drug trafficking and money laundering. There are NO economic opportunities for locals nor foreigners for that matter. So whenever I return the 1st thing my family and friends ask is " yo wich pat de food ?" Meaning where the money at . After the hugs and kisses everybody expecting and looking 4 you to be coming back with a plan to make money . This is the type of culture I was raised in. So I know what being poor and surrounded by people stuck in a situation and they look to you to offer something. I am not implying all Nigerians are poor and living in poverty but I also know that the minority in America wearing designer clothes and bragging about driving Mercedes dont represent the country as a whole. Where I am from that mindset does not fly. I mean no disrespect but u would be robbed kidnapped and killed if u come back only to show off.

So yea sister we just come from 2 different thought processes and understandings of the world. I view tourist and the like as colonizers personally. Tourism is the only industry my country has and I watch as EVERYBODY black and white come to enjoy the beaches and eat cheap food and Bleep our women. How does that benefit a country ? Maybe I bring my own mental baggage but I feel tourism is 4 white people. If a black man/woman is planning to return to Africa w/o any type economical ambitions you are a waste of space. Just so u can come take pictures and post on instagram in some village to stroke your own ego and act as if u "connected to your root " Especially a country w/ the market size Nigeria has. I dont know of any other BLACK country with those opportunities which is not already completely controlled and ran by white and Indian people.

Open your mind sister ,
Love is Love

i think you need to read his write up he said he is coming to understand the country first.

so what is wrong for a black man to come to Nigeria for purely economical reasons? there are people doing it but they are low key.

Thank u brotha

Its crazy how they totally neglect the fact I said I was open to attending a University. What better way could u learn about a country and culture than by attending a University ? Its a common theme among OUR people I have noticed. When I say our people I mean black people. As much as we may deny the fact black people share common traits regardless of on the continent or in the diaspora. There is a huge distrust among each other. A black man seeking to open businesses or make money will never be welcomed or treated w/ the same respect as a white man. Where the white man is welcomed with smiles and enthusiasm a black man will be frowned at and looked at suspiciously. Whether tribalism or gang banging we will put it aside when the white man comes . I watched Ghanaians while I was there kiss white people ass at the slave forts and knew I could never live there. No disrespect but I could not live in a country who caters to tourism and exploits the history of oppression and the slave trade. When a white man visits a slave port they dont see what I see. They see remnants of a glorious part of their glorious history when the white man was supreme. Then these same dumb idiots run to kiss their ass voluntarily subjugating themselves. If it was left up to I would blow the whole thing up while a group of German tourist walked the dungeons .

We have real issues as a people we must overcome if we are to move forward. Which is why I say I would not involve myself or really participate in any tribal affairs or try to "learn" which tribe I come from. I see black people as ONE . If u black u black thats all I care about . once u involve yourself then Yorubas , will tell u how bad the Igbos are. The Igbos will tell u dont deal w/ Hausa . I dont have time 4 none of that

Respect 2 u

I have lived in Itire, bode Thomas, to Alaka estate to Iponri to Ekololu road in suruler to Gra Ikeja to Festac town to Akin Ogunlewe in Victoria Island and know the ins and outs of that city so please stop acting like because you come from a local government there you know the city better than me.

I am born and bred in Lagos guy!

so why aren't you telling the truth about lagos. Culture is long gone in lagos because the city has been able to accept everybody from nigeria. Culture is only strong outside lagos.

nobody cares about your culture in lagos. Many people are there to make money.

I know nigerians and how some of them think they are better than others. When in reality they are trying hard to survive.

Let's try to be realistic. Culture is not always strong in big and financial cities the same goes to newyork, london, tokyo, moscow and lagos.everybody is in that city to make money and not to talk about culture.
