Firstly you have to answer my question
Do you just want to be okay in life or you want to be successful?
Re: Advice: Should I Go For Medicine Or For A Masters? by OAM4J: 8:06pm On Jan 05, 2019
Your passion bro! Your passion!

You can never get it wrong following your passion, no matter how long it takes. Even when the money is not flowing you will still be happy following your passion, but you will always look back if you are doing something that is not your passion.

What's your passion?. Do what you are passionate about. What brings you fulfilment.

[s]Im quite young so i think if i go for my masters and phd as soon as im done i shall be a phd holder by 26 provided everything goes as planned[/s]

Is finishing a PhD at 26 now an achievement? The main question should be what exactly are your career goals? Why do you want to do a masters and PhD in biochemistry? Why do you want to study medicine? Etc

My candid advice is that provided you're doing very well in biochemistry, you could further your studies or career by exploring an area that bridge both biochemistry and medicine.

If you don't like this, then you can go for your medicine if that's what gives you joy. It's better to do what you naturally have passion for. Better later than never.

Shalom!
It is my brother, a huge achievement

If Medicine is ur dream, I say go for it. BCH is not a professional course. But if u still wanna do a master's program, I suggest u go for a professional master's program like MPH (Master's public health).

It is better to go for one's dreams and know that at least u tried, than to take an easier route and live a life full of 'what ifs'.

If it cannot guarantee you a job, then, it is not an achievement, you just wasted money.

Good day everyone. I am a final yr biochemistry student. And i have been wondering what to do after school. Ive always dreamt of studying medicine but the situation here in Nigeria has discouraged me(due to how difficult it is to get the admission even after scoring good enough scores in Jamb and p.utme).

I'm speculating if i should take a direct entry form or i shld just head for my masters as soon as im done. Im quite young so i think if i go for my masters and phd as soon as im done i shall be a phd holder by 26 provided everything goes as planned. But then there is this medicine i also love.

Your advice would be appreciated especially those that have been in this situation before and have already passed through this, any regrets.

By the time you answer this question you will know what choice to make.

Ten years from today do you want to be a medical doctor or a biochemist?

If you have the funding, go abroad for your MSC AND then your PhD at a research-intensive university. You will never, ever regret. Go beyond an MSc abroad.

If you don’t have the funds for that— or your funds are constrained to Nigeria— stay in Nigeria and complete an MBBS degree. In that way you could work in Nigeria or do some PLAB exams after your House Job and head to the UK or somewhere else in the West.

As far as Nigeria is concerned, Biochemistry will not fetch you any good job. Even with a first class or Masters or PhD, your best bet is a lecturing job. I advise you go for Medicine or Law, or any other professional course since you're willing to continue studying.

Talking from experience, I studied Microbiology and was jobless for 3yrs even with a good 2.1 grade. I had a lot of friends in similar situation. I then switched all the way to study Law, it's paying off and I'm very glad I did. You can never go wrong with a professional course.

Make sure you don't try to study law if this is not in your "passion set".

That said, if you're a top, top student in your biochem degree, you could get a scholarship to study medicine abroad, full scholarship, provide you also take and blast some other tests. As far as Nigeria is concerned, the chances of landing a decent job as a medical doctor are way, way, way, higher than for lawyers.

Do you have a top GPA in your biochem?
Yh im gunning for a 4. Cgpa sha

At 26, you should be on a career path and adding to years of experience.

However, if you decide to study medicine, do not study in Nigeria. Except you dont mind spending 9 years or more in school.(strikes or extra year). Only exception is if you get into Unilag or ilorin.

You will be studying with 17/18 year olds , just so you can prepare your mind.

Basically, you might be 40 before getting to the point you are right now with Biochemistry.

Whichever u finally choose, please make sure it is outside the shores of Nigeria...

I hope it's not the fear of not getting a job after graduation that's putting this pressure on u already... fear not... ur future is bright...

I've come to realize that one mustn't practice as a profession what one studied in school...

Going to school is to get "educated" aka learn sense, interpersonal relationships, strategies, planning and preparation for the future.... it's not solely about learning a "course"...

I had my masters just after NYSC...in Nigeria... I cant say it's useless, but till now am yet to see an opportunity I won just because of it... (We just too like certificates in this country...) The academic part was abit advanced but way less than expected.... I reminisce each time, seeing it as an opportunity to get more "educated" (as above)

#my thoughts.... I see going for a Ph.D. as streaming one's self to lecturing and research (not much opportunities for that in Nigeria as compared abroad)....and if u miss these two... employers beginning to see u as "over qualified"...

And in the industrial world in Nigeria, Ph.D. and masters with no experience makes u feel like sh!t... experience matters

Don't let that fear freak u out.... Good u're planning early but don't rule out the thoughts of other opportunities if they come...

Las Las... na money everyman dey pursue. We're encouraged to follow our passion each time but it sure has to not only make us happy but roll in the money....Passion too dey change o... that y people change career midway.

I wish u well... Get a good understanding of something before delving in...

Go back and study medicine, masters degree without work experience is stupidity of Nigerians, it is a waste of time common to Nigerian graduates thinking it will increase their chances of securing a non existent job in a nation with a high increase in graduate unemployment undecided

What are you mastering How to cram textbook and write jargons called thesis on what you know nothing about except what you read from a white man written textbook

Just go back and study medicine, don't waste your time and scarce resources doing masters in Nigeria lipsrsealed
