I love programming and I love Mathematics. I choose Mathematics myself when I applied for jamb since 2017. Currently in 200lvl. My eldest brother called my dad and ask him what I was studying, so he told him it's "Mathematics". After their discussion, I was told to start planning to write another jamb and choose computer science. I don't know how to convince them. pls help, should I continue with Mathematics or sit for another jamb.

pls, I need your candid advice.

which of the maths are you studying? Is it Pure maths, Applied Maths, Maths & Economics or Industrial Maths?

I'll advice you to continue with your mathematics program. Computer science is not something you drop out to study, with the proliferation of MOOCs everywhere on the internet, you can learn just about everything a CS degree in Nigeria would give you.

Listen, myself and a lot of my friends are hardcore programmers and software architects and none of us have a CS degree, we learnt the art of our trade online, study mathematics and do the same.

Though, these days, maths by itself is useless without programming. The beauty of maths in my industry is in the application which basically means you should focus more on your numerical methods. Scientific computing is hot right now and is a fine blend of both worlds (maths and CS).

As for job opportunities, so long as you can master a few programming languages, you'll never have a problem. You're in 200 level, which means IT soon. Just improve your numerical methods skills (I mean master and own it) and you can apply at CypherCrescent LTD www.cyphercrescent.com, it's a Nigerian company that has some of the smartest dudes in the country, they do a lot of mathematical modelling, just the sort of thing you'll like. Look them up, contact me if you wish, I'll love to help you harness your passion for maths. Cheers bro.

continue with your mathematics and learn coding in your spare time. dont tgink lecturers will teach u how to code u will still learn it yourself. intense of job most employer will take u based on your skills.

Programming is just a part of computer science. You must not study computer science before you start writing codes.

I studied physics and here I am making A living from programming. I have never made a dime with my physics cert.

I started learning Programming while in school studying physics at 300L....just imagine mixing physics and coding....it all boils down to passion. And you have it!

Mathematics, Physics, computer science and engineering are the four subject one should have a degree in to get a programming job. However getting a job in programming solely depends on your skill.

You can still be getting millions from programming as a freelancer with your mathematics even while still in school studying.

CODING is a skill....not something you need to go to school to study.
Y
My 2 cents..
Your last statement though. Have you ever heard of a descipline called software engineering?

My brother, sometimes it feels sad that such things do happen. Since you like mathematics and you are already in 200L I would advice you to stay put.

Convince your mum that mathematics is your passion and I want to believe your results are giving good testimony to back it up.

Watch her convince your father over a plate of egusi soup with palmy to wash it. Your elder brother wouldn't have a choice than to fall in line.

Many lives have been ruined due to this ish. You see students walking about with no purpose just counting the years so they can finish their sentence and embrace freedom.

My guy, please continue with your mathematics. Computer Science curriculum in our public universities is more than 80% mathematics. Start developing yourself in the particular area (programming, networking, security etc) of IT you have interest in at your leisuren time.

1. You're not going to become a programmer by studying Computer science. Check my many posts on this regard.

2. Computer science is 80% mathematics.

3. Ignore people mentioning algorithms and data structure because you're already learning them in mathematics without realizing it.

JOB, JOB JOB!!!

For many companies, a CS degree is not enough to get you a job. Your ability to use languages like Java, C# will be the main requirement for getting the job. Unless you have connect, few companies are ready these days to train new staff on programming.

Your ability to program in any of the ffg: Swift, Objective C, Java will be required to get employed by companies who build or maintain mobile apps.

Mastering two or more of the ffg: HTML, CSS, Javascript, php, Asp.net, React, bootstrap, laravel... will be required to work in a eCommerce like Jiji, and Jumia, and web development companies.

Mastery of any of the ffg: MySQL, MsSql, Oracle, Windows Server, Ubuntu server will get you a job as a database / sever administrator.

Mastering Python can get you a job in all the above and also as a data analyst.

In fact, master just Photoshop and you can become self-employed, work with eCommerce, app / web developers...

Again, a CS degree will get you an interview. But mastering just two or three of the above will get you the job.

You have two more years to make yourself a hot cake as a programmer. If you're willing, patient and ready to spend money on internet data to learn, PM me.
please can you contact me on 08142425930...I want to ask you something and learn from you

You are better off studying Mathematics, trust me. I would advise that you put your mind to it and achieve a 1st or a 2.1 with Mathematics [please do not go beyond a 2.1]; before then find a research area which you are keen on and then pursue a Masters or a PhD outside Nigeria [with a 1st you can proceed into a PhD directly without an MSc] and you will be shocked at the near limitless opportunities you will get with that, inclusive of scholarship opportunities. Graduates with excellent quantitative skills are sought for especially in the West. Develop your computing and programming skills alongside your degree.

Do not go back and retake Jamb for Computer Science. It will be a waste of your time.

Continue with your mathematics, unless you plan studying abroad. start learning programming on your own. Its about what you can do not the certificate you carry and mathematicians are the best programmers all over the world.

Study computer science so that your future will be secured. Provided you have coding skills.
The future is glaring.
A message from a programmer with a Masters degree in CS.

U don't even need to write JAMB.

I'm sure math and CS are in the same faculty in your Uni .

You can do change of course.
Or Change of department.
Contact your HOD on the procedure.
You can as well contact your school Registere.

Change of course might reduce your current level from math 200L to CS 100 level with out writing JAMB.

Mathematics is equally as good. In a Nigerian Federal or state university, you're better off studying Mathematics than Computer Science.
Nigerian Universities can keep up with the trend of mathematics but not with ever evolving CS.
So my Brother, continue with the mathematics and at the same time, start learning how to code.

Nice Opinion.

Also OP needs to understand Mathematics has much more opportunities than Computer science especially when Studied in Nigeria and by Nigerian Lectures.

Infact Computer science is like GSD. You know that breed of dog that's been highly Bastardized so much that a single GSD can contain above 3 different dog breeds including our popular Ekuke.

Moreover, if you're good in Mathematics, you would be much better of than a Computer science graduate with additional qualifications from institutions such as NIIT.

Anyone can be a programmer as long as they're willing to learn and dedicate the much needed time required to be successful like every other fields and niche.

Don't let yourself be distracted or deceived by the Title Computer science or Developer or Whatever.

They are just titles mostly advertised by those rarely able to Properly Operate a Smartphone.

Plus with mathematics, you have got more Job opportunities And you get better Value for your money (Tuition fees) studying Mathematics than Computer Science especially in Nigeria.

Most Nigerian Lectures can't even write a simple program but they would bombard you with Algorithm and theory they rarely understand.

Abeg make i stop here as I dey busy BUT it would be stupid to rewrite Jamb.

As long as you have got a Certificate, what you practice later in life doesn't matter.

Any day they call out Graduates, you sef go follow answer Present.

And if you graduate with Mathematics and later learn programs or designs, etc, then you automatically have more than just the BSc. It's like having multiple Certificates for the price of One.

To be good in any computer field, just learn enough Tutorials, dedicate your time into it and Find any Organization where you would have a Real World Experience even if the Pay is poor.

Remember, it's just to earn a Real World Experience and it doesn't last forever.

Most people very Good om computer aren't even Graduates even here in Nigeria.

In fact most are Self taught.

Let me just tell you the truth. Mathematics has more opportunities, they need you virtually in most fields. When you finish your Bachelor's degree, you will appreciate mathematics. Lest I forget, Mathematics is the bedrock of computer science.

Please don't leave that mathematics. As a programmer, in my company, we have many graduates programmers that are Mathematician, Physicist. Most of who code more than we computer scientist. In your mathematics, you will still be introduced to C language, Mathematical modeling, numerical methods, there is even algorithm and simulation in mathematics. So all these make you a better person when you take programming as a career.

I wld advise u not to change. Mathematics has more job opportunities than computer science. You can do anything computer science graduates do with a b.sc in mathematics... jst learn ur coding/networking/database &cyber security. Depending on ur interests.

I guess you have had loads of advice, nonetheless:

half of your computer science course work in university will be focused on mathematics.

If you're expecting the university to teach u programing, u on a long trip!

Time don't wait for nobody, one of essential factor considered in labour market screening, is age, don't waste that advantage in abandoning your current course.

Here is my advice complete Bsc in mathematics, while in school improve yourself in programing find what computer language is in higher demand. Learn improve yourself, network with other programmer.

By the time you graduate you have added advantage on your side.

Thus
1. Age
2.Experienced programmer
3. Bsc mathematics ( analyst advantage, computer algorithm efficient and a good data scientists)

Any successful programmer needs mathematics for algorithm.

I studied Management as my first degree, and I am, for now, an intermediate in Python programming. Next JS and PHP. It's not about one's first degree anymore, even though some first degree, in this case, give you an advantage in coding.

Hello bro, I was in this delima in 2006, I defied my admission (industrial chemistry) and enrolled for pre-degree program after which I got the course of my choice (computer science).. I never regret that bold decision, I am an application and cyber security expert with a leading bank in Nigeria. I will sincerely advise you stick with your Dream course, (computer science). The fact that it ur dream course will make it easy for you to excel in it. I am a senior Information/cyber security officer with a leading bank, did my NYSC here in 2012 and was offered a job afterwards.
