I've my personal experience on this same issue of paying respect to elders who clearly don't deserve it, and I can categoricallyly tell you that it was not funny. Come and see so-called elders tell cheap lies that even an slowpoke can demystify. O boy I seriously had to change it for them. Right now, if not anything, at least them dey give me my way.

Respect is earned, though my elders earn my respect by default till they start f##king up. Also, respect is reciprocal. As the young person respects the elder, the elder is supposed to pay back the respect. It's embarrassing for a youth to respect an elder who clearly is exploiting such for selfish purposes. In such situations, I immediately or gradually, depending on surrounding circumstances, withdraw my respect.
