I've read a lot of views and ways to dive into the system from graduates of Accounting, finance, Mbbs, Nursung and the likes when one finally arrives in, either through bridging programs or taking some courses but we've had no information from Microbiology graduates over there or does it mean we'll have to change career path when we finally arrive. Just in case anyone is up for it, putting money in the Canadian/US stock market is really not a bad idea, especially now that the global market has tanked a bit. You really couldn't do this effectively in Nigeria given the shady dealings and insider trading going on on the NSE on the one hand, and because there is no ready access to this market for Nigerians on the other. But being a Canadian PR now offers you the rare opportunity to dive into the global market and profit from the growth of large US/Canadian companies. Buying ETFs which track the Dow or the S&P500 is always a good starting point, if you are scared of the uncertainties associated with individual stocks. These (ETFs) always mostly go up anyways, sometimes returning on the average about 7% annually, more than what any savings account will give. And there's no better time than now in this supposed "bear" market. Essentially, buying into the Canadian/US economy offers the chance to put some money in the same economy you trust to offer you a better standard of living than your home country.

I haven't landed yet, but will soon be with my two angels. I hear its tough by doable. Start making plans early ...accommodation, job, school, transportation etc. Get mentally, emotionally and spiritually prepared. Cheers

Hi, it's tough but doable like you have mentioned. I currently have 3 children and my husband is in Nigeria but we all landed together the first time and sorted out our accommodation and bought a car before going back to Nigeria. You might not be able to work some jobs cos of your kids and you will have to sort out day care for your kids. Make sure you have back up money too just in case. You are also entitled to some government benefits but it might not make that much difference.

Hi @blessings2017 not a lawyer but following your posts on the Nca and foreign lawyers pathway
As for everyone else who made posts about a profession or location that they have not been able to find any info on, I think it would be a good idea to find out whatever info you can online or on other forums that may not necessarily be Nigerian anyway and then post your info or just your experience thus far trying to get info and then just sharing and brainstorming with other people who would most likely see your posts and chip in. It may help someone else in the future or would help put things in perspective when others chip in.
Other professional pathways that seem like they have been discussed in detail were not always like that, as people found info they posted and it just added to the body of knowledge we all share.
I am saying this as a suggestion only and it is not intended to offend anyone.
That being said, I do know of one quality assurance mgr, first degree microbiology and years of experience in several quality mgt roles in food and beverage industry in Nigeria and getting here was able to get a job as a QA after a couple of months of applying and interviewing. We are not in touch anymore. One way of figuring out what may be required to get a job you want is by reading the skills and qualifications on job ads on indeed or any other site.

Hi, I'm not a microbiologist but I worked in this line in Nigeria. Here in Canada you can go into food safety and quality assurance as have mentioned. Food safety is also a big deal over here. You might have to do some courses either a diploma or a professional masters in any college or University of your choice to teach you all you need to know. There are also some ISO certification courses you can do. You can also work in a food laboratory either government or private. There are also opportunities as a food inspector. You will need to do some short courses to teach you what you need to know. There are some government agencies that hire microbiologists along this line. You can do your research and apply with your Nigerian degree and you can get lucky.

Oh I’ve got a lot to ask! I sent a pm request earlier.

I’ll like to know more about the following —
i. The accompanying documents for an NCA application
ii. The complexity of the exam, study materials and the recommended number of courses to take in a sitting for a full time worker
iii. If a student visa will be required to write the NCA exams in Canada
iv. The meaning of the phrase “articulating” (or something like that) after obtaining a qualifying certificate
v. The implication of having a qualifying certificate without being a member of the equivalent of an NBA branch
vi. The probability of a qualifying certificate boosting an express entry application
vii. The best way for a legal practitioner with less than 5 years practice experience to emigrate
viii. The approval chances of an in-house counsel planning to emigrate when compared with a lawyer working with a law firm
ix. Which threads are dedicated to foreign trained lawyers in Canada etc

It is definitely a lot of information to ask. But hopefully answers to these questions will also help other people in the legal field hoping to emigrate.

To the microbiology guy/lady. You did not mention anything about your work experience. A degree in Microbiology opens doors to a lot of other professions like the ones you listed. Therefore, your work experience plus your qualification will determine the sort of bridging program to apply for.

But how will the PR status be maintained if he just visits? It means he would have to use up all his leave (assuming a minimum of 30 days vacation per year) which would still not be enough to cover the 2 out of 5 year rule

However u can build a safety net.....
Process the application n if successful, send ur families over while u keep ur job in naija and visit until u deem it fit to move.....
The cons of families living apart due to PR was also discussed on the previous thread....

Whatever the case, this is a big opportunity for ur family especially the future of your kids and I'll advise u to consider this application seriously....
U can't compare the opportunity in the west to nigeria in all ramifications.....
