The presidency has called on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State to desist from basing his campaign for re-election on falsehoods concerning President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Governor Ortom’s campaign is designed to drive attention from pertinent issues in Benue state.

“Governor Ortom’s campaign is clearly one designed to stir division and hatred, and to divert the people’s attention from his inability to pay staff salaries and pensions for several months.

Below is the full statement by the presidency.

“It has been noted that the governor has been visiting churches in the state where he falsely tells congregations about President Buhari’s so-called plans to Islamise Benue State.

This nonsense has formed the basis of his campaign, because he has nothing to offer Benue people.

The allegations coming from Ortom were particularly unfair, when one considers how much support the governor received from the Federal Government, which supported his grazing laws as a means to end the farmer-herder crises that have plagued the state.

If not for President Buhari’s insistence that the governor be given a chance to effect the law, he would have faced resistance from different sources and found it difficult to implement.

While advising Ortom to immediately stop his dubious attacks on President Buhari, the Federal Government calls on the people of Benue State to not fall for Ortom’s deception and allow themselves to be hoodwinked by such a negative campaign.

They should instead, ask him why he has refused to pay staff salaries and pensions for months, and what he did with the funding from the excess crude account which should ideally have gone towards addressing such payments”.

This Ortom is very wise. There is nothing he can use in campaigning for his re-election other than the herdsmen crisis. Benue people, It's one thing not to want to vote for Buhari because of the herdsmen issue, I can agree with that. But it is foolish to want to vote a failed governor because you think you are getting back at the president. In the end the president wins and Ortom continues piling up salary debt.

I'm from Kogi State and I will vote for Buhari. I will neither vote Smart Adeyemi (APC) nor Dino Melaye (PDP) for Senate because both of them have failed us. Come November 2019, if APC fields Yahaya Bello as its gubernatorial candidate, I'll vote against the APC.

This is an era where you vote on candidacy and not party line. So Benue people, you can chose to vote a governor that doesn't pay salary or find an alternative. The choice is yours!

Additionally, the presidency has cause to respond to ortom due to his activities against the president and that does not in any way suggests the president is in support of yahaya bello's refusal to pay salaries. Infact, buhari has suggested that govs who didn't pay salaries shouldn't be returned and that includes yaya bello, so what's the fuse?

Well, am in Kogi here and everyday what I hear on the news is Yahaya Bello asking Kogi people to vote for the re-election of PMB and his APC led govt.

Ironically is that Buhari has asked Nigerians to vote out people like Yahaya Bello who find it hard to pay salaries. I dunno what's up with Ortom but I wonder if these people still have conscience.

APC stands no chance in Benue. The presidency allows itself to be misguided for too long over hersdsmen /farmers clashes. The moment Ortom left APC he started paying salary, what is the magic and nobody is looking at that .
