A Bank Verification Number (BVN) search may have exposed more accounts linked to the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Detectives are understood to have written three banks for details of the alleged accounts of the suspended CJN.

The banks are Standard Chartered Bank, Union Bank and Heritage Bank, according to a preliminary report on the activities of Onnoghen by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and other agencies.

The CJN is accused of false declaration of assets. A six-count charge has been filed against him.

Further investigation into Onnoghen’s accounts notwithstanding, the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the European Commission (EU) yesterday urged caution on the part of the federal government in its handling of his case.

The US called for due process to be followed in the matter while UK faulted the timing of the suspension.

Sources knowledgeable about the investigation of Onnoghen’s finances revealed to The Nation yesterday the turn-over in the alleged accounts of the CJN as follows:

USD account from October, 2012 to September, 2016 — $1,922,657.00
GBP (£) account from 2012 to September, 2016 — £138, 439.00
Euro account as at September 30, 2016 — €55,154.00
Naira account from September, 2005 to October, 2016 — N91, 962.362.49
A document sighted by The Nation correspondent states: “Upon receipt of the report, a preliminary investigation was conducted during which the following actions were carried out:

“A request was sent to the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) for a report on the suspect.

“A letter of investigation activities was sent to Standard Chartered Bank, Union Bank and Heritage Bank to provide the statements of accounts of the suspect;

“A BVN search through the NIBSS platform was conducted on the suspect and six (6) more accounts were found to be linked or connected to the suspect;

“The statements of accounts of the suspect were analyzed and further to that, a letter was written to Standard Chartered Bank requesting for additional information on suspicious activities in the account.”

There was anxiety yesterday over alleged restriction on the movement of Justice Onnoghen.

Security was tightened at the official quarters of the Justices of the Supreme Court.

Journalists were turned back from gaining access to the quarters in the three arms zone.

A reliable security source said: “Yes, the security around the quarters was enhanced but I doubt your insinuation of restriction of movement of the CJN.

“With the tension generated by the suspension of the CJN, security agencies are only taking pre-emptive action to prevent the judges from harm.”

There were also strong indications last night the battle over Onnoghen’s fate would shift to the court tomorrow.

A counsel in the defence team of the CJN said: “We will go to court to challenge the illegal suspension of His Lordship.

“We hope the Federal Government will respect any court order reinstating the CJN. Anything otherwise is a judicial anarchy.”

OH LORD!!! shocked shocked shocked

When they steal government funds and buy choice properties for themselves and their families, they are Mr. A or Mr. B., but when they are caught, they become Niger Deltans who are suffering political persecution.
The United Niger Delta Youth Council says enough is enough of this treachery by political allies from the Niger Delta region. They must be held responsible for their actions and inactions as regards their conduct in office. And the case of Justice Walter Onnoghen should not be politicized to look like ethnic persecution.

Sane, honest and hardworking Nigerians IJAW YOUTHS have said it all above!!

It's so good to know the EFCC are investigating the corrupt people that paid these bribe to this criminal's account.
SLOW and steady, we will get to a New Nigeria.

God bless our President MUHAMMADU BUHARI.

People never really understood Buhari from the onset, he’d always maintain that abacha isn’t corrupt, meaning he didn’t steal, but took money from the government cause its his birthright as a Fulani army general, you expect someone that served under abacha to add anything meaningful to the lives of Nigerian, someone that didn’t bother to improve himself. History will never be kind to Obama, Kerry and Hilary for forcing Buhari on Nigerians.

No matter the amount of propaganda/ media trial, nothing will justify this nonsensical display by the cabal and APC.

Onnoghen is not been tried on a criminal case. No body is disputing how he got monies in his account, if not you would have had EFCC and ICPC gruelling him.

The case is about a mere declaration of asset.

APC and their devilish croonies are trying to turn in around into a criminal case which it isn't.

When in 2015 Osibanjo a mere judge in a,state declared almost $1 million in his bank account, how come nobody questioned how he got them?

The CCT trial is not a corruption trial.

Dem take STEALING swear for this guy?!
A WHOLE Chief Judge of the country!!
shocked shocked shocked

When he filled his accounts with dollars and pounds, he wasn’t a Niger Deltan. When he refused to provide educational assistance to scores of needy people, he wasn’t a Niger Deltan. When he bragged like he was a mini-god, he wasn’t a Niger Deltan.
But now that his atrocities have come out to the open, he is now a Niger Deltan. We the United Niger Delta Youths Council rejects such hypocrisy and would never be a part of such all on the name of ethnicity and religion.”

I'm vehemently anti Buhari. But that wouldn't mean I'm blind to these questions

1) What Exactly is his source of all these wealth?
2a) If legit why didn't he declare?
2b) Can forgetfulness be an excuse when ignorance isn't?
3) If not legit then what a scandal!
4) Doesn't that mean MOST of our top men in Nigeria are secretly filthy rich?
5) SHOULDN'T THERE BE A NATIONWIDE INQUIRY INTO THE ACCOUNTS OF ALLLLL NIGERIAN PUBLIC OFFICE HOLDERS IRRESPECTIVE OF PARTY, TRIBE AND RELIGION?
6) What is wrong with the black man's brain? How could u be so rich and living in a country that is so poor? IS THERE SOMETHING INTRISTICALLY WRONG WITH NIGERIANS?

This has NOTHING to do with politics. Removing Buhari remains a goal.

cheesy

Some useless youth whose brains have been mortgaged will come and defend the judge

I don't support APC blindly, i have called PMB a dullard several times here. I know his anticorruption drive is highly selective e.g. Babachir , Maina

But half a loaf is better than no bread. GEJ opened the doors to the vault.

Score Buhari 10% on anticorruption.... isn't 10% way better than 0% ?

Its very funny that people are lashing out on only Buhari (he also acted stupidly) with so much vitriol when the real culprit is the CJN. A whole head of.the Judiciary. First of all, he didn't declare his assets beacuse obviously he can't describe this sources of wealth. No one screamed Blue murder on something that obvious. Secondly with an authoritarian move, he suspended a meeting that was meant to.act on the CCT's order to suspend him. That move alone is undemocratic, corrupt, selfish and an abuse of power from.a whole CJN because he was trying to delay Justice. No one lost their brains over that. The NBA who should have called him.out on this but they kept mute all because of Partisan politics.

No one brought the internet down. If he had done the right thing, will the Executive have to.step in? This is just Hypocrisy on Steriods!!

Let me tell you the rape of Democracy here, A CJN who has kept a whole body like the NJC hostage, A senate who should.be sitting to.delibrate on national, legislative and budget issues but left their jobs to campaign and also the President for foolishly unsurping the power of an independent body. The anger should be directed at all of them. We should learn to.stop making the same mistakes when we cherry pick with bias on who to call out cus of sentiments that will favour no one. Call all.of them the f*ck out!! Perioood!

...Less than 2 months after Buhari was sworn in, he confessed he cannot do much for Nigeria as he earlier promised because he is now old and weak, and lamented that he wished he was a younger man.... he would have done more for Nigeria.. this was July 2015.

And people are ready to vote in this carcass and brain dead jihadist for a second term of 4 years in 2019??

If Buhari wins a second term, God forbid, he will move Aso Rock to London as he will be taking treatment for his undisclosed illness for another 4 years with the country footing the bill..... and the Cabal will openly be running Nigeria as a mafia state, and you will not even find Buhari, to blame him for anything.. that is what they are planning to do....

Nigerians, if you re-elect this evil man, then you so much deserves whatever will happen to the country afterwards, Enough said!

No northern CJN will ever go through this level of humiliation. Never! It would have been settled on Friday inside the Mosque after prayers. More so, the emirs would intervene and crush every dissenting voice within their sphere. This is one thing most Southern muslims and non-muslims do not understand and may never comprehend.

The North is strategic and never tarnish the image of the few brains they have alive. Never! Only the south pounces on the flesh yea demand the blood of their own to drink.

Nigeria will not move forward with sectionalism or nepotism but nepotism/sectionalism practiced across board will bring all to the table of rationality. Some folks will still not get this.

Even if you link Onnoghen to murder of CHARLES DE GAULE and JF KENNEDY, the law has provided a procedure to deal with him. Anything less or more is acting "ABOVE THE LAW".
Somebody must sooner or later be made to pay for this nonsense.

BUHARI IS NOT ABOVE THE LAW!

Rubbish, all they are good at is media trial.

Ganduje was recorded taking bribes, nothing was done, EFCC didn't freeze his personal bank accounts like they did Fayose

Obanikoro and Fayose were caught on tape talking about how they will share money and rig election, Obanikoro joined APC and he's now a free man whereas Fayose is still being prosecuted.

COAS Burutai was exposed my investigative journalism of the mansions he has in Dubai and other properties, Buhari didn't sack him neither did EFCC go after him, today he's still the COAS despite all the corruption going on in the military

Maina was reinstated by Buhari despite evidence of corruption against him

Kemi Adeosun was never prosecuted for certificate forgery scandal after all she also claimed ignorance that she didn't know the certificate was fake, but if anybody else claims ignorance, they will be quick to say that ignorance is not an excuse in law.

Minister for communication was exposed for not participating in the compulsory NYSC program, he still remains a minister today.

Babachir despite proven corruption allegations against him was never prosecuted and even has free access to Aso Rock till date

Omisore's passport was returned to him and his sins are forgiven because he helped APC win Osun election.

Let all Buhari appointees, aides, APC governors and members of APC also have their assets declaration form perused and scrutinized and let's see if they are not all guilty of the same crime they are accusing the illegally suspended CJN of!

Everything has an expiry date, so is tyranny.

Posterity will judge us all
