hello, I didn't know where to start my own message so I had to use reply. thank you.
I'm a student of medical laboratory science, I just finished 400level and I'm about to enter final year but I'm confused on what major to choose. I like both hematology and medical microbiology and I'm really good at both to. I really don't know which one to choose that will not limit my opportunities and career options and also I also need to choose one that I can easily further abroad.

Also, what if I want to study medicine abroad after school? can my MLS degree get me a direct entry? will my choice of major affect this direct entry?

I'll really appreciate anyone's advice and opinion.
thank you very much.
I have a feeling the person asking this question is from Uniben here. Anyway the elders will come and contribute with their wealth of experience but from my own little knowledge. You can get to the peak of your career no matter the specialty, MMB is more common per say than haema, you have those in pure microbiology, SLT microbiology option etc but Haema is reserved for medicine/medlab. And Yes I think a first degree in health science course can get you direct to med school instead of going through pre med in US if you feel that is the career path you want.

Good day to you all. Please is it possible for a direct entry student in MLS, who had done some courses similar to the ones offered in 200L to be considered for a wavier in such courses? while i'm asking is because I had done Renal Physiology,GIT Physiology and Endocrinology and Reproduction in the past which i performed very well, Now the same courses are reflecting in my 200L courses with same syllabus. Please I earnestly await your responses. Thanks.

Nah it can't be waived, you're been considered as a 200l student and you'd be treated as one (you'd take all the courses a 200l student would take + exam). But your course advisor will/should tell you more.

In terms of private practice in Nigeria today, which do you think is more profitable.

@Amid1010,
You are Welcome to Medical Laboratory Science.
Here is a General breakdown

First year:Basic Sciences i.e.Bio,Chem,Phy and Maths,General studies and others.

2nd year: Anatomy, Physiology,Biochemistry and introductory MedLab Courses. These courses are not easy. You just have to keep reading and By the Grace of God you will scale through.

3rd year:You will go into the Department proper and Clinical Posting Starts in the Teaching Hospital.you will be posted to the different branches in MLS(Haematology, Histopathology,Med.Microbiology,Chem.Pathology and Immunology)

4th year:you will Sit for your First professional exam and Must attain a culmulative of 50%.The exam consist of MCQs, Practicals in the Different branches of MLS,and also ViVa(Oral Exam).
If a Student doesn't attain 50%,he/she will repeat the Year.

Final year:you will Choose two branches in MLS that you wish to specialize.Sit for your 2nd professional Exam.Write your project.Your Posting will be only to your specialty.

This is just a General Breakdown. grin grin

congrats. Your first year you will basically offer basic sciences again: maths, zoology, botany, physics, chemistry.
200level : you move to core medical science courses anatomy, physiology, biochemistry.
From 3rd year you move to medlab proper with clinical posting in the teaching hospital LUTH in your case till final year with professional exams in 4th and 5th year. My advice for you is look for a second or 3rd year student to guide you as schools and lecturers vary. Good luck

Just do what you are asked to do.
Instead of trying to defend nothing.
We all make mistakes,But correcting our mistakes is the Main thing.
Do the right thing bro.

Sure I do but we should be able to correct certain things where necessary. Before "we" become an object of mockery if you don't understand then read back some previous pages then you'd understand.
Sorry if you misunderstood my stance

Only MLS has the licence and the required knowledge to conduct Laboratory investigation for diagnosis purposes.
You can float/own a Laboratory as a technician,MCB etal. But the Running and operation of the Laboratory Must be Manned by a Certified and licenced Medical Laboratory Scientist.

It Depends on the Hospital.
You are not a MLSt so you are not meant to be there.IT in chem path Lab doesn't Make you an Authority in it.you need a Licence to work as a MLS(Which you don't have).
Just try your Luck. But i know big Private Hospitals would reject you.

Good morning great scientists.

I am a 200 level Biomedical Laboratory Science Undergrad. I have a question for the certified professionals here. The job of paternity testing or genetic related tests, is it a role of the Medical lab scientists and which of the specializations in MLS affords opportunities for the Scientists.
