For Mi band 2 that I use, it is selective in terms of skin colour when reading heart rate. I don't know about Mi band 3, may be the same too.

You can also read ur heart rate by placing ur thumb or index finger below the sensor.

Another angul, place a clear white paper under the sensor before you wear it.

I have the Mi band 2 and 3, measuring heart rate with the 3 is still hit and miss in my opinion, but it measures way better than the 2..

The three is a big upgrade on the 2, try and get it, worth every penny..
