Much grateful for this.

I am one of silent readers on nairaland since this great platform helped me achieved my dream of coming to canada few years ago. I think it is high time for me to give back to this wonderful platform. I quite agree that few nigerians move to BC because everyone believe that BC is expensive to live in but you start your life in all these cities you mentioned which are affordable like the rest of the cities in canada. Another reason is that nigerians are few in BC so, some of us relate to white people a lot because you don't see many nigerians to relate with grin. So, people goes to Calgary, toronto, manitoba etc just to be in the midst of nigerians. And so other reasons personally known to nigerians.

Yes. I agree with you. Another name for BC is Bring Cash (BC). Car insurance monopoly, higher gas etc. We know that we are paying for good weather in BC compared to other provinces. We called it Sunshine tax but if you have a good job, BC is Paradise. Another things is that most nigerians start from these cold provinces and later move to BC once they have enough money to live here. I will advise people that want to move to BC to start from not too big cities then move to a bigger cities in future. In kelowna, i bought my first 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo 2017 for $200k. Like i always tell me friends in bigger cities. there is always a rat race in bigger cities. If you are making big money in bigger cities, please stay but if not, please think again. It takes me 3 hours driving to vancouver if i want to see bigger cities.

snoop4dem:
well as much as I agree with everything you have written, people dont think BC is expensive. It actually is expensive to live in. I used to live in Victoria before moving to Vancouver and I can tell you that the cost and standard of living is very high compared to my friends in other cities. From housing to Insurance, to gas prices, etc... trust me it is on the high side compared to other places and the assumption is that the weather is fantastic and which is what has been driving the prices of things up in this places. e.g a person could be paing 400- 600 CAd for a room in any other province but might have to cough out at least 800 or more in BC for the same room and with stiff competition. People in Calgary can afford to buy houses for like 350-500k in the long term. In BC you wont get a house on the average for less than a million. I live here and I still live here and it is a super nice city if you have a stable job et all but the standard of living is high. But look on the bright side, it is very beautiful and you will know that you are in canada in BC

This license thing confuses me. If I have a naija license and FRSC letter do I go straight to G1 or G2? Would I also hand over the naija license?

Edakun answer me.

Yes you would definitely hand over the naija license. Having the FRSC letter and license will only give you exemptions if you have years of driving under your belt. i.e. you can't show up with a spanking new license and get the exemption. The license has to be at least one year old to exempt you from the G1
Also it must be original license, they check.
To verify that your license is genuine, go to the link below, enter your license number and DoB. If your details come up, it's genuine. If it doesn't, it's fake - even if you did it in FRSC office

They don't take your Nigerian license in Ontario. They just have to see that its valid and they would give you back.

So, to your question sir, I will analyse each cities one after the other because i have been to most of the cities either for work or vacation.

Kelowna
This is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada now. I lived in this city for 3 years because i did my schooling there and also worked there before moving to Kamloops for full time position. Though, i still go there on my days off because of my great network there. It is a relatively big city that has all the social amenities present in bigger cities. It is very affordable to live here if you have a good paying good. Few nigerian doctors are here with a big mansion living in grin. Is just that real estate is becoming pricey now because, it is like a retirement city (Lots of old people with big money), people from nearby bigger cities (vancouver, calgary, edmonton) comes there to purchase house after getting tired of bigger cities rat race grin. Kelowna has one of the best weather in canada. lots of sunshine. It is a tourism city as well, lots of beautiful place to see. Nice beaches, hiking trails, mountains surrounding. i can keep going all day long about kelowna because i love this city. Not too small, not too big. traffic is getting worst now because people are discovering this paradise everyday grin. Lots of construction companies in kelowna which gives you hope of getting a job in your profession sooner or later. I don't know anything about civil engineering job in kelowna or any cities in BC because am in Health care profession but i believe you will probably need so sort of licensing body but lots of construction companies because

I hope i am able to give you few info about all these cities. Generally, they are all great cities to live. And note, BC
Bring Cash, Everyone know that but all these cities are affordable. Trust me. Don't be afraid. God bless you sir.

Wooooooow!!! Bros u too much...to know that there is someone here who could give this much detail is amazing...God will bless you for us. With this I already have enough basis to compare and decide...I really appreciate you for this. Cheers and wish you all the best as well.

Wow nice!! I'm finding more and more reasons to port to Ontario. In Alberta and Saskatchewan, they collect the license from you. In Alberta, it's even a crime for you to hold two licenses - so you can't come back to Nigeria and do a reissue

Good day, please will really appreciate some clarification. I've posted on the sister thread as well:

Medicals are due to expire in 2 months, even if PPR and COPR are issued within this timeframe, chances of landing before expiration of medicals are very slim at this point. If asked to redo medicals (which hasn't been asked yet), is there a way to fast track this process? Will it be just a case of walking into any of the chosen physicians for this or one has to go through the long process of booking an appointment and is the amount to redo medicals same as the initial amount paid?
Thanks

I was offered a job in Kelowna about 2 years ago and was thinking of buying a home if i relocated to BC. The houses I viewed online where very beautiful and were around 600 to 750k. They were mostly custom built houses. At that time, one won't be able to buy similar custom builds in Calgary for same amount. There are however lots of 450k to 500k houses in Calgary which will help people get their feets into the housing market if they have a decent wage. These homes will usually be attached/detached cookie cutter house within that price range.

Vancouver though...I don't know how people can afford to live in that city....

Since your wife is a nurse, am very sure he can get health care assistant job with less struggle because BC government is having shortage of these people now then she can focus on getting her nursing licence sooner or later

Thanks for this post. That Kelowna fine sha. The lakes are beautiful. BC attracts a lot of doctors from the prairie provinces. Possibly the milder weather and mountains are the main attractions.

Very insightful Einsteino. Your posts are always very refreshing. Might you be able to shed more light on your time at Amazon? What did you do there? I'm looking at a career change when I get to Canada. I'm a geologist now, but I'm looking at project management. Thanks.

I worked at their FC, which is basically a warehouse. I am not sure that is something you want to make a career out of. If you need details about what I did there and what I think of my time there, I wouldn't mind to share.

If you are asked to redo medicals, you book appointment again like the first process. However, you would have a maximum of 1 month to redo the medicals (thats what applied in my case) so you have to book with the clinic with closest date. Amount for medical is as per rate on the day of medical.

I dont think you can fast track after you redo medicals but request for passport happened few days after my medicals and visa issued is valid till the expiration of new medical anniversary or passport expiration - whichever comes first.
