I've been learning makeup since last month when I saw they weren't ready to call off strike. We're resuming 2nd semester and there would be loads of dinners and events that would require makeup application on girls ,,that's money

Now this is a wife material here. Your no. 6 is working.
Rugged you babe, God bless your hustle

Hmmm. . .
Some extra curricula activities are more beneficial and relevant to what people study in school. Reasons like what you are supporting is why most student don't take advantage of the strike to study and make better grades. Why learn make up when you can learn computer networking or programming as an engineering student. Don't be surprised to see that such a person will still graduate poorly or go back to struggle with academic works they could have studied during their strike.
Sorry to say. But you are making one sided assumptions here. I love reading but you don't have to read ALL THROUGH a 2 month strike to be excellent in school.

The said programming you highlighted now has been commoditized (with every Tom, Dick and Harry trying their hands at it) i.e. anyone can decide to do it too.
By the way no one can be anywhere good in this if he/she just pursues the craft during this short strike break.

You seem to have a narrow impression of worthy endeavors to pursue in life. I used to too but soon discovered that it is myopic.

The point I am making is that we(you are very educated/enlightened) should never think that certain endeavors are higher and should be pursues to the exclusion of other seemingly lowly ones.

Everyone, or anyone can become wildly successful and yes rich in any endeavour be it making confectioneries or making highly complex healthcare electronic equipments.

My sister learnt both hair making and make-up on YouTube. She's cashing out big, use your money for data subscription (3g will be enough to download lots of make-up videos) and buy make-up kits ... Learn it on YouTube and practice with a friend's face .

I'm telling you, bro. Most people just sit at home doing nothing. Many people don't know the of knowledge obtainable on YouTube.

My colleagues were paying about 80k to learn web design and development. I used Mtn N25 for 500mb (before it changed to N50) plan every night to download video tutorials on Web coding. That was how I learnt mine, with less than N1000 ( though I'm still learning and practicing).

It was also from YouTube I learnt how build and increase my own power bank capacity. I also learnt how to do some plumbing works, print and customise tee-shirts using household tools/materials.

Many people are so narrow-minded they don't even bother to 'think outside the box'.

I spend more than 10hrs online reading and finding out new things every day. (Yeah, I have a phone with very good battery and monster power bank to help too).

I like your sister. She's smart.

You can learn how to drive car on YouTube but experience never come from YouTube.

You are paying for the experience and not the knowledge.

Exactly bro, what has been sustaining me are skills I learnt and enhanced using online medium. Many of my friends I encouraged to do same are doing a lot with less. YouTube is not just for funny videos or movies or music, there are a lot to learn and I have capitalised on it.

God bless our hustle .

You have a point .

However, you have to draw a line between different skill levels, the guy is talking more on soft skills and vocational skills. They are very much attainable online, that's why you have so many online learning portals like Udemy, Alison, Lynda capitalising on it in.

Specialised skills like driving, flying, medicals, law, etc can be simulated but like you mentioned, will need professional guidance to fully integrate.

I'm paying less for both actually; I don't just watch and do as they do. I also follow the comment section to get better opinions from experts or experienced folks and then again follow up on what they discuss about.
I didn't just build any how power bank myself, I further learnt about how to balance voltage and increase the capacity and also solder copper and lead, how to connect batteries in series and parallel and what to avoid in order not to cause an explosion. Learnt more about 18650 li-ion and li-po batteries which prior to that, I never had any knowledge about and many more....( I hope I'm not trying to look like a smarty pant here). Just pointing how watching one thing took me further/deeper into a whole new world.

From what I learnt on YouTube, I was able to carry out my own project with just less than #5,000 (fuel and data subscription) and I also built a small web app for a colleague for his project. That was the first 20k I made when I was in school. Isn't that gaining both knowledge and experience with so little amount paid?

I believe putting what you learnt into practice gives you that experience and further exposes your knowledge base. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Okay...I see you are passion driven... I get your point but what I'm trying to say is you pay for the certificate that all... most people can learn on their own in the house without any passive lecturer but why go to school...simple it's because of the certificate they get after the program...

Learning all this is good things which makes you more creative but for you to get social/formal acknowledgment you will need to pay to some accredited institute which gives you their certificate for some token....

so if you go for online course for free but at the end you are asked to pay some $ dollar to get your certificate. You are paying for the experience in form of certificate. I hope I'm making some point...

Can I ask which career are you into?

Oh, I get what you mean now. Yes, of course we'll need that certificate when the time comes but I was speaking based on student-level and what they can achieve with very little money before the strike was called off and also what they can learn without paying huge sum of money while in school. Like the one who paid 70k to learn make-up whereas another person made use of YouTube and saved herself a lot of cash.

I am focusing on the web development world as for my career path.

She paid 70k and got her money's worth. Now she own a studio, partners with huge makeup companies, numerous connections and deals.
Let me see how the person learning from YouTube will get to her level.

And why won't someone who learnt from YouTube not get to her level or even surpass her level?

The only thing that is going to stop her is if she relents and stop learning or trying out new things.
