Chess players are considered intelligent and strategic, which has made the game one of the most difficult board games ever. It has been used as a stimulant for great warriors who went to war when it comes to planning war strategies.

We all know that life is warfare, and there is so much we can learn when it comes to playing chess.

At the end of this post, two things will happen;

- You will learn to apply some chess rules to your everyday life.

I started playing chess a few years ago, and it has really affected the way I lived my life – most likely positively.

5 Secret Life Lesson to Learn from Playing Chess

Playing chess is fun, but there are one or two lessons you can learn from it. What are they?

1.You learn the basics before playing

You can’t win a chess game without learning the basic moves. To be able to even win a chess game, you must understand how chess is played and other simple moves.

What this means

Skill acquisition is very necessary for life. Especially as a Nigerian, without skill, you are as good as finished – unless you have the connections.

In this last post, I listed out some simple skills that can make you so much money. Thanks, goodness that lots of people responded, and they are getting trained already. It isn’t too late to acquire any of those skills and start your journey towards financial freedom.


2. You develop yourself before Advancing

In chess, you have to develop your minor pieces before you advance. Development means taking control of the center of the board. In most cases, whoever takes control of the board center has a higher chance of winning the game;

What this means

Personal development is important in helping you succeed in life. You must develop yourself in your key areas before you are able to move forward in life.

Skill acquisition is also one of the ways to develop your life. The more skills you have like;

Soft skills (Analytical thinking, ability to work under pressure, Oratory, etc)

Hard Skills (Graphics Design, Web App Dev, Mobile App Dev, etc)

Educational qualifications (Certifications, Trainings, etc)

All of these will position you to advance far in life without obstacles.

3. Learn to Exchange sometimes

In the game of chess, at some point, you have to exchange pieces just to move the game forward. This is usually set up by those who feel they are in a stronger position.

What this means

You can’t have everything in life. Sometimes you need to use what you have to get what you don’t have. It musn’t be in a bad way only, there are other ways to make exchanges that isn’t immoral. As long as it favors you, go ahead with the exchange.

Think of when buying someone’s idea or investing in an already existing business. Always use what you have to get what you don’t have!

4. Always protect your assets

Your most valuable piece on the board is your king. For safety, the king is hidden in a move called “Castling”. This will help protect the king from danger.

What this means

Identify your valuable assets and never lose them. They might be the skills you’ve acquired, your money, or knowledge.

No matter what happens, always protect those assets that are valuable to you. Never lose them for anything.

5. Think before you leap

Aside from the opening stages, it takes an average of 1 minute or more for a chess player to figure out the next step to take. This helps to curb failure and improve chances of winning.

What this means

How many times have you sat down to think about the possible outcome of any move you decide to make in life. Critical reasoning breeds success, and that is one of the foundations of success in life.

Keep fighting till the end

As long as the king isn’t checkmated yet, you haven’t lost. Keep looking for escape routes to force a draw.

What it means

It simply means don’t give up till you can no longer breath. As long as there is life, there is HOPE.

1. The Pawn - One's background might not be the best, especially in the nation where we find ourselves. There will be moments where we have to stoop to conquer, where we'll have to do the bidding of those above us even against our values, but through the tenacity and doggedness that we employ despite the challenges faced, we can make it to the top.
The pawn proves that indeed chaos can be a ladder to the top, though great uncertainty lingers, it can still be maneuvered, but not everyone will make it, sacrifices will have to be made.

2. The Queen - This particular one teaches us to never underestimate the power of a woman. The same amount of effort she'll make to keep and contribute to the rise of a man she loves (including immoral things like 'Lying', 'Manipulating others into helping him' etc.), is the same level of effort she'll make to tear down the empire of a man she scorns (including making false allegations against him). How you apply this knowledge is up to you.
Loosing your queen also doesn't automatically mean that you've lost.

3. The King - One doesn't have to be the strongest to possess the traits of leadership, and you must protect him at all costs because the leader is always the brain behind every booming empire. He might not be the smartest academically (nb: please, don't take this the wrong way pertaining to Nigeria's current situation), but he could know his way around in politics, he might not be the best engineer, but he could be tongue that'll attract customers to the product etc.

4. The Bishop - To earn the trust of the leader, you must be willing to cross anyone for him, you must be willing to say what he wants to hear etc.

5. The Knight/Castle - For progress to be made, you have to be really good at what you do, that way, you can maximize your potential. This goes back to the skill acquisition thing, if you have a passion for it and excel at it, then get it and put it to use. Trying to manage everything by yourself only ends up limiting you, if you don't have the required skill-set for a particular gig, get someone with it and work together e.g Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

6. White moves first - Possible sentiments here, but i hope that someday, Black will move first

Honestly, Chess teaches a lot of things, i marvel at the intelligence of whosoever invented it. It also encourages critical thinking, time management, ability to relay all possible futuristic outcomes like Dr Strange, a hundred percent focus, an innate attention to detail, the ability to adapt to situations etc...

. No 5 is the real message. Keep fighting. Your opponents might make mistake just at the end, never give up At 4, every piece is an asset not just the king. The pawn can become a queen in minute. Don’t take any one for granted. Never think your opponent don’t know what they are doing. Think like they think. Imagine yourself in their shoes, what would you do. Always imagine other people in your shoes and you in their shoes. It helps in your relationship. Be sure about your decisions before you make them and make sure you don’t reverse. It is not advisable to undo a move. Keep moving.

Other lessons:
- Never overlook or look down on anyone no matter how little you think such is or how powerful you are. The pawns comes to mind here, they are supportive, defensive and can be a threat even to the King. They keep moving at every opportunity and stand a chance to become great and powerful.
- Always look before you leap
- Never give up, it's not over until it's over.

One lesson I learnt from the game of chess is to "think in terms of your opponent". You may not really need up to a minute to make a single move if you do this. Just assume you are your opponent, read his mind and moves and you will go steps ahead of him.
