panafrican:it would had been easy for Hitler to invade the UK if he had used the same force and might he used against the Soviets, invading the soviets was the first sign of foolishness Hitler ever showed, he even declined to take advice from his generals, and that was the beginning of the German downfall. 3 Likes |

Personally I think Hitler's mistakes were opening two war front.. .eastern and the western front. Would have focused on operation Barbarossa.. . Battle of Britain gonna b surely be a difficult considering that the US were backing Great Britain. Secondly trying to bring Mexico against the people of America failed woefully. . The more reason they had to support the allied forces. Thirdly delaying the military campaign against Russia to liberate Mussolini also failed when you know there's a thing called the "Russian Winter". Napoleon Bonaparte will surely have one or two thing to tell him about the deadly Russian weather if he was still alive. Fourthly declaring war against the United States after Pearl. Having read a lot about Otto von Bismarck (died in 1898) I think he would have dissuaded the Imperial Japanese government to do things differently . |

Hitler's generals warned him before hand that it was not yet time to invade the USSR but he refused to listen, secondly the Germans were not expecting a brutal weather condition and a very very bitter Soviet resistance. When the Germans were struggling to acclimatize with the fierce conditions of the weather, the soviet brought in the Siberian Division of their Army, Siberians are known to survive in ice, eat on ice, sleep on ice, make love to their wives on top ice, above all the love fighting in a very cold weather, the Siberian division wrecked havoc on the German army by flanking them from both side, forcing the Germans to take a defensive formation. If Hitler had invaded Britain with four million Germans just like he did against the soviet, Britain wouldn't have been able to survive it. 3 Likes 1 Share |

nigeriancritic1:thousands of Americans soldiers died in the battle of Iwo Jima, but they downplayed the number of their casualties, the Japanese had a very impressive history of defending their mainlands that no foreign army has successfully invaded and take control of the entire Japanese Island, the Americans were aware of this and made use of the Atomic bomb, pls point of correction it wasnt a nuclear bomb that was used on japan, it was an atomic bomb, they are both destructive in nature but they are different. 4 Likes |

For me the most tormenting aspect of this war was the concentration camps and the hideous crimes perpetrated against the jews , from austwitchz birkenhau to sobibor to dachau and then the death marches , and hen the individual accounts of some survivors of the extreme terror they endured I mean killing folks with zyklon b and roasting them to ashes God!! Makes you wonder how the nazis got so heartless and cruel like it's almost impossible to comprehend . I mean the signs where written all over during the months leading up to the war that there was no place for jews in nazi germany and I wonder why they did not just leave germany . They where been persecuted boycotted and terrorized but they stayed in germany anyway , Ww2 easily the most significant event in history for me just seeing movies about the war alone makes me desire for the 80s |

I love this thread.... Lemme contribute my own quota... To start with, most historians don't believe that the world war started with the German invasion of Poland.. some claim it started when German took over Sudentenland of Czechoslovakia. Some others claim it started in the Sino-Japanese war.. I am still learning more about the world war 2 through Wikipedia, films and YouTube documentary. So Lemme give a brief summarisation of some of the major timeline of the war to the best of my knowledge Firstly the German invasion of Poland, There were many factors that led to the start of this battle but the major one was that Hitler wanted to collect back the lands in Poland that had arguably originally belonged to the Germans.. the Germans had used several tactics to make it seem like they were provoked by the Polish(I'm trying to remember the name of the incident). When all failed, Hitler took the war head-on after seeing through several situations that Britain and France were not ready for a war or too weak to fight a war. So the First battle of the World war 2 started. The Germans who clearly have been violating Treaty of Versailles, were too powerful for the Polish to handle. Inasmuch as the Germans were powerful, they also used surprise tactics on the Polish. This is why when the invasion started on the 1st of September 1939 probably 4-6 am, the Polish army had a low number of active personnel's ready in the army so by 3rd of September, the Germans using the blitzkrieg tactics had already destroyed much of the Polish bases... Though Britain and France had promised support for the Polish already, help never came and polish was completely defeated when the Soviets attacked from the West Secondly is the German conquest of Russia, Tho I haven't read extensively on this, the little knowledge I have is from films like Enemy at the Gates, Stalingrad... By late 1940 or so, the Germans having conquered countries like France, Norway, Netherlands and much of western Europe, they set their sights on Russia. Prior to this time, Hitler and Stalin had already signed a treaty of non-aggression. But when German had conquered territories, Hitler viewed Soviets as a threat to his growing power and he decided to defeat them also. At first , the Germans had a good time taking Soviets territories but as they got further into Soviets territory, things got tougher for them... Then their conquest was stopped at Stalingrad which was few kilometres away from Moscow. Both Stalin and Hitler knew of its importance and commited men in order to win... Then the Russian Winter came... Because they didn't expect to still be fighting a war by December, a lot of German soldiers paid dearly for lack of preparation for this... This was the turning point of the war in the East .. and then the Russians counter attacked and drove the Germans as far back to Berlin Lastly is the D-DAY, preparations for this took over a year.. it is said that Stalin was pushing the Americans to open a second front of the war. The D-DAY began at the Normandy landings... Originally There were confusion on the actual place to start the attack on where the Germans will least expect it but in the end , Normandy was chosen. The Allied forces landed on 5 beaches of Normandy island namely Juno,Star, Omaha and the rest I can't remember now. Most of the islands met little or no resistance but at the Omaha beach, there were much casualties on the American and German side. After much fighting, the allied forces finally conquered the beach and the beaches were used as a base to spearhead other battles that happened in inward France and towards Germany... I'd have loved to write more but lemme stop here for now... "There were many factors that led to the start of this battle but the major one was that Hitler wanted to collect back the lands in Poland that had arguably originally belonged to the German" Beautiful analysis, but let make quickly address the above in a precised form. 1. If the Germans only wanted to annexed the lands in Poland inhabited by German speaking people alone, the German weaponry wouldn't have been on a heavy scale of such magnitude meant to confront larger armies on multiple fronts at the same time, evidence suggests they had other reasons 2. A nation who is planning for war needs a convinceable pretext and the best excuse for the Germans was using the annexation of some parts of Poland. 3.The German army had everything it needed, the materials, the war machines, the tacticians/strategists, the generals, the soldiers, above all they were well organized. 4.From my own analysis there are indications that it would have taken almost a decade to make preparations to enable a single nation to wage war with more than half of Europe, that war was initiated based on premeditation. 4 Likes 3 Shares |

nospmoht:After the second world war the Germans where under heavy observations, and since then German military operations were limited. Meanwhile the survival of the Jews who were subjected to Mass slaughter by the Germans went back to Palestine in 1947and fought to reclaim their land so they could have a sovereign nation. There is no way such could happen because Isreal has become a powerful nation and the Germans wouldn't want to risk a war with Isreal. |
