Good day Seniors and all. I am happy to have gone through the last thread and this new one. You are indeed doing a great job. I can gladly say I am part of this thread now. I submitted my application since October 2019, glory to God, I got my PPR Jan 15, 2019 and my application has been approved too. I will be picking up my Passport from VFS this week. I intend to land in Calgary in MAY, 2019. Below are my profile and questions

- Single Applicant (Age: 33)

- Education (Bsc Geology, Msc. Petroleum Geology)

- Certification:
- Advanced Food Safety management training (A pre-arrival program sponsored by the Canadian government)
- CCNA & CCNP (Expired since 2012)
- Several Oil & Gas training courses

- Work experience.
- Current: Realtor/Real Estate agent (3 yrs)
- Previous: (Water Borehole Geologist (3 yrs)

(1) I understand I will need the APEGA licence to work and also that the oil & Gas sector of Alberta is quite down now, I would have loved to work in this sector. Has anyone gotten a job on landing as a Geologist without the licence?

(2) I also understand that I need a licence to practice in the Real Estate sector too. Has anyone gotten a job as a Realtor or Real Estate Agent with monthly pay (plus commission) in Calgary, If yes, how viable & financially rewarding is it? I wouldn't mind doing a short course for this if I can truly get a job quick in the sector. I also don't mind referrals

(3) I did the Pre-arrival Advanced food safety management training course (it is a 21- certificates course). Do we have anyone here working in the food processing industry, can I get a job on landing with this certificates.

(3) Lastly, I am open to new opportunities and don't mind changing career path as long as I can get a good job. If I am to do this. Which other paths and sectors can I explore that will be financially rewarding in the long run, which will also lead me to the managerial position someday. Pls note, I am ready to go back to school and do diploma course for this. I already checked out some courses in SAIT, but I need to know which one is really viable with huge job prospect.

- I am sorry for my long post, I would like inputs from our seniors living in Calgary. cc Salford1, Einsteino etc. Thanks

- Can someone Pls add me to the calagary whatsapp group. Thanks
1. You need P. GEO to practice as a geologist. You could however get your Geo in training just like Engineer in training. I haven't seen any new or recently landed geo getting geo jobs. Some of the Geos (oil industry) I know actually lost jobs. Alberta oil sector is not quite down, but it is very down. Na optimization dey reign now for those still operatimg. We have one of the most expensive oil mining process in the world so Alberta took a heavy hit. No suprise Calgary has either the highest or second highest unemployment rate amongst cities in Canada. Office jobs which Calgary is majorly known for were seriously affected.
Are there any other jobs you might be willing tp explore outside the oil industry?

On the brighter side, the Conservative party are likely to win the election in Alberta in a couple of weeks. Although, the conservative government do not control the world price of oil, but maybe just maybe some of the conventional energy investors that fled during the down turn will return since the Conservative are usually against anything green energy or sustainable development.

2. I highly doubt you will get a realtor job that pays salary. They are usually strictly commision. They collect some percent of the sellers sale. If you are good at selling or flipping houses, you could make tons of money. I mean serious tons of money. Why would a realtor need salary anyway when some of the super realtors can sell 6 houses in a good month and make nothing less than 10k on each house sold. The housing industry is one of the biggest industry in Canada for a reason.

3. Food safety certificates courses are usually for people working or hoping to get a job in a place where food is prepared on a large scale. I know Provincial health services are one of the major employers of people with such certificates. I do not know maybe you meant a different food processing industry since what you hold is an advanced certificate. Have you checked Alberta occ info or indeed ca to see where such certificate(s) would lead you?

4. Can't say much about this since this will majorly depend on what you love doing. Your best bet would be to explore careers that are recession proof. The closest thing to your Geo if you decide to look for similar alternate careers with better career prospect at the moment (while keeping SAIT in mind) would be Civil Engineering/Tech.

Good luck!

Well you can use the traditional Craigslist which is the most common place to get this done. But in recent times i have heard a couple of my colleagues and even my sister saying she got her accommodation with MarketPlace on facebook! Heads up, it's expensive out here so bring cash! lolz

Please wait if you can. Although it expires after 6 months or so. It usually doesn't take long to get. If you are sure you will use it immediately you land, you can go ahead.

Someone once said "the crops we have today were genetically modified over thousands of years" through natural methods and sometimes through human intervention.
The ones I will avoid are those modified using animal genes.
How do you identify the ones modified using animal genes ?

Waina maker is commercially sold as a "vitumbua maker", It is a non stick electrical appliance use to fry vitumbua also known as waina or masa in the Northern part of Nigeria.

"Waina" or "Masa" is a popular delicacy amongst the Hausas. The dish is basically made from a slightly fermented rice meal and it is similar to a pan fried rice cake which is paired with pumpkin or groundnut soup. And of course it is highly nutritious.

Below is a picture of the vitumbua maker a.k.a waina maker.

So sorry for the distraction...*runs away* grin

The name sounds familiar but my memory is sketchy. when I was a kid, my cousin would buy me a meal that seems to look like what you have in that pic... I think she said it was made from rice or wheat, but we ate it without soups, was a pancake of some sort, only tastier.. It was commonly sold around Barnawa area of Kaduna. Since then I havent had or seen one, I wonder if its waina.

Yes, it is exactly what you just described. It is mostly sold around Barnawa and most parts of Kaduna, I'd say its very common in the North though I've come across some sellers in Lagos too but mostly where Hausas are populated. I remember as kids we use to dip tge waina/masa in sugar then eat as snacks, it tastes even better. grin

There are alot of recipes and pictures of it on Google so you can check and confirm if its the same as what you had as a kid.

No idea, but I believe it will be stated on the packaging. They may not use the normal name but a chemical or botanical name so you may want to Google. The way these things work is that gradually you will find it more and more difficult to buy the "real" thing and the readily available option will be the GMOs. It is happening in the UK with sugar free drinks. They have even introduced a sugar tax.

My guy, just chop it like that - it is part of the obodo oyibo life. Except you are buying direct from a Farmer's market (not cheap), whatever you find in the store whether tagged organic or not is mostly GMO'd.

I was also like you at some point and contributed my widow's mite to enriching Jeff Bezos by faithfully buying organic products from Whole Foods. Well, I watched a documentary and did some research on what the US FDA requirements were before a produce could be tagged as organic and I realized it was just a pot of beans. Think Ikoyi cemetery and Yaba cemetery...Lol.

Anyway, if you are big on non-GMO'd food, I'd suggest you look to owning a garden where you can grow regulars or fork out the cash at any Farmer's market closest to you.
I don’t really know about your province, though I haven’t been to Canada before but I have come in contact with many organic farms online in Ontario.

Here in Finland, almost every fourth consumer buys organic products on a weekly basis. I believe Canada and Finland share the same harsh weather conditions which restricts the presence of pest and reduce the need for pesticides. I know only this cannot prevent GMO, but atleast speaking for here, organic products are common. As developed as Canada, I hope there should be glaring and open market to choose to the kind of product you want. Like this shouldn’t be hard to get, but should be within your reach.
