Good Day House,

I have followed this page from 1st post, to have an in-depth info about schools and funding opportunities.

I humbly present my profile for school suggestions and any tip to secure funding for fall '19.
I have actually completed applications to PhD Chemistry in the schools mentioned below. Hoping to apply to any more recommended schools on here.

*My little advice to anyone preparing for the Gre and Toefl is to ensure you start well ahead of admission deadlines.. Take the exams early enough so you can have enough time to prepare all application materials.

Undergrad: 3.45/4 (Unofficial WES evaluation)- Industrial Chemistry
GRE: 312 (VERY terrible exam experience)
TOEFL: 103
Publications: 1 (Currently under review with two journals)
Research Experience : About 2 years working in the Oil and Gas
Conferences: A handful
Schools applied: VCU, FSU, MSU, LSU, Univ of Utah, Tulane Univ and University of Alabama.

Contacts have been made with some POIs in about five of these schools...Mostly positive and was asked to apply.

What is your take house ....CC @Scholastica16, @Time2Smile, @kayceerilyn, @Sheeda995, @Ndawe, @Temmitats
Also studied Industrial Chemistry grin

Hello, I got into Villanova University . Got the email to check my application portal around 2am Nigeria time today. 4am Nigeria time yesterday, I got an email from the graduate director of my department that he has recommended me for admission.

It was such a fast turn over because I wrote my GRE on February 6th, I immediately sent my unofficial scores to him via email, when my scores became available online on February 14th, I uploaded it to my application, it was on Monday when my official scores got to them that all the requirement was met. I am of the opinion that he read my application before I submitted my official scores.

Also I have been in contact with him before my GRE exam and he waived the evaluation requirement and TOEFL for me when I sent my transcript and letter of English Proficiency from the Registrar of my school to him via email.

The deadline is March 1, so funding decision would come after then.

My profile: My search was guided by the time I took my GRE cause most school's deadline has closed. Here:
GRE: 161Q, 153V, 3.0AW( pretty disappointed by the AW but nothing spoil)
Undergrad: 3.47/4.00
No publication
3 letters of recommendation from my lecturers

Still awaiting decision from:

Bowling Green State University
University of iowa
Georgia State University
George Washington University
Michigan Technological University
American University

I applied to a mix of Masters in Statistics and Biostatistics

Fall 2019, yes we can

Dear all,especially 'Seniors',

I noticed that we rarely talk about funding here, although I know that it is the Nigerian culture to hide earnings but I feel it could help newbies make decisions especially those with "stella" profile (even though we with obasanjo profile need it too) as they maybe having multiple offers.Another thing that make me wonder what's wrong with sharing what the full funding entails is that we are almost anonymous here.

Also how has your experienced been with the amount given to you monthly,is it enough or you have to do extra "hustle" ?.
I am asking this especially to those who have full funding so that others coming may prepare their mind for what is ahead of them.

Thanks in anticipation.

P.S : make una leave that lab small, socialize here on nairaland and go back to the lab grin

I use this site http://www.phdstipends.com/results to know the stipend rate for various schools. I just type the schools name in the search box and it shows stipend rate for different departments.

Great one

However the cost of living varies for each school. Many are trying to prepare their minds as to what they're to expect. It's important to know if the funding would cover the whole living expenses so as to be aware if taking a loan is an option or hustle money before leaving or just go like that.

BTW..Time2win are you for Fall19, Fall20 or Fall earlier? smiley

With regards to the issue of stipends and living expenses for both Phd and Msc, I think it’s best we connect with current graduate students of the schools we applied to. They are the best source of information on such issues.

We can connect with them on Facebook, Nairaland, LinkedIn and any other social media platform out there.

All the information I have about the schools and department I applied to were gotten from students attending the school and in the department I applied to. I met them all via nairaland and LinkedIn.

Which program are you applying for? Purdue is regarded as a 'public ivy', this means it is quite difficult to get in. You can give it a try if you have a very good overall profile and high UG GPA.

Funding levels depends on whether it is MSc or PhD. The monthly stipend ranges from 1000 to 2,500 with most PhD funding between 1700 and 2200 per month.
The biggest expense in the US is rent, so the best way to reduce expenses is by having a roommate. Therefore if a single student can keep rent below 500 per month, the other monthly expenditures should be less than $500, giving a total less than $1000. Although rent varies based on States and is most expensive in California and the North East (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts).

Most PhD students end up saving. A fully funded single PhD student has no business taking illegal work to make ends meet, or else it is a case of greed.

You will however need to come with about $1500 to settle down before your stipend kicks in.
