I'm an introvert and I don't really like living like this. I find it hard to start conversations with people and even when people try talking to me I can't hold a conversation. I wasn't always like this though I was quite extroverted as a kid and I was really popular in school. I only changed during my teens. I'm turning 19 this year and I want to get rid of this introversion. I've managed to make about 2 new friends but I don't really know them and they don't really know me. all we do is talk about anime and it doesn't really go past that. So, if you were an introvert at a point in your life please tell me how you were able to overcome it and start opening up. I don't want to feel insecure anymore.

THE FACT IS, ITS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SO. UNLESS YOU SMOKE WEED, WHICH ISN'T ADVISIABLE. JUST BE YOURSELF AND CHANGE FOR NOBODY

The best way, I mean the only way to overcome it and start opening up is to avoid doing things that makes you feel comfortable. Period!

Sir, anything that has to do with self-improvement or personal development I don't think there's a need of being oneself. You know vividly that in this world of ours you are only rewarded based on your confidence and social intelligence.

IF IT WAS EASY, YOU WOULDN'T NEED TO COME HERE TO SEEK FOR SUGGESTIONS. I'M AN INTROVERT,AND I'M OLDER THAN YOU, HENCE MORE EXPRIENCED THAN YOU. MY FATHER USED TO TELL ME "YOU CAN'T CHANGE YOUR NATURE". THOUGH I DOUBTED HIM, I'M BEGNING TO THINK HE'S RIGHT

Why do you want to change, is there anything wrong with being an introvert?

Why would you wanna change from being an introvert?

You should be happy that you are one of those rare people who aren't afraid of silence or being alone.

Being garrulous doesn't necessarily translate to strength. You should know that. And being quiet doesn't mean you are weak.

I'm sure you've heard of the saying "still waters run deep".

I am an Introvert and proudly one. There is strength in silence. Introversion doesn't equate being academically dull. I love the fact that I surprise people when I talk. And i
make sense most times because I have abundance of time and clearness of mind to think deeply of what I have to say before I say it

You have said it all.

I'm also an introvert and proud of it. People know me with that nature and it makes people to respect me. I was the top of my class during my undergraduate, I hardly contribute in class even on topics that I'm quite familiar with. My fellow students pay keen attention if I wanna contribute to anything. I'm not exaggerating even my lecturers respected me. Being an introvert commands respect, makes you man/woman of short words, you get lots of love from people because you don't initiate arguments, and most importantly you will always stay outta trouble.
Most often people misinterpret being introvert to be unsocial. I'm an introvert and social. The difference is a set boundaries in my social life.

Why this misconception that introverts are boring, timid or shy people?

Anyway, I am not an introvert. Just a conservative cheesy

Your problem is not introversion but rather timidity and shyness. I'm an introverted person and I don't have any problem with socialising but I choose not to most times unless it's gonna add something reasonable to my life.
Being an introvert isn't a result of lack of confidence, it's a matter of loving your personal space. ₦200 recharge card can last me for a month as I hardly call anyone unless I have a reason to but friends and family are always calling me because they want to be around me; I make everywhere fun.
For your question; if I were to come back to this life again, I'll still be introverted. Extroverts' life annoy the crap out of me.

Because you're an introvert?

Not accepting one's nature will always lead to self destruction. Also, it reeds of inferiority complex.

You don't need to be like 'others': be yourself! I'm an introvert too and so happy about myself. smiley

I guess you're right. I was having a chat with a friend of mine today and he said my major problem that's keeping me stuck is that I don't want to talk and that's true. I don't want to change every aspect of my self I just want my voice to be heard and not be stuck on the side lines

First, you can't have been extroverted at some point and then change to introverted, except you've undergone some sort of mutation that has changed your genes. So, it's either you've always been extroverted or Introverted.
The way I see it, it's not a matter of temperament we're dealing with here, but rather of self-confidence. And for someone who doesn't 'like who they are and wants to reverse it', that points to a low self-esteem. I might be wrong but I'm just saying.
If you really are introverted, then understand it's not a disease, it's not a mental illness, it's not a pathological condition. It's normal and you should understand that.
Your inability to initiate conversations or make friends suggests that you're not comfortable with yourself, you don't like yourself enough and you don't see how others can see anything interesting or worth befriending about you, and that's a self-esteem issue. Introversion doesn't turn you taciturn, neither does it make you socially uninteresting, but rather attracts you to like minded people like a magnetic pull.
I am introverted and I have very good, close friends, I can talk to a complete stranger if I need to, because I'm okay with myself. I can decide to stay out of the crowd by myself and just watch, but it doesn't mean I can't speak to the crowd.

Stop running away from your shadow it will only give you nightmares in the game of "self denial".

I am an introvert. Silence is golden to me, I do not seek the company of friends and family because I value my space. I'm held in high esteem among my comrades because of my nature. I command respect everywhere I go as a result of my God given spirit of quiteness and gentleness.

What you're running from is what other's try to practice to stay safe, but they couldn't because "introversion is a rear gift possessed by rear men."

Quit the worry. I started out as an extrovert from primary to secondary school. But at the twilight of my secondary school days I began to study more, and somehow I started leading a quiet life, guarding my space and being alone. This I am sure is your true personality.

But I also think (could be wrong) that you have a problem with self-confidence. Your inability to ignite a chat when you want to has little to do with being an introvert. I don't make plenty of noise. I can live in a place for years without making a close friend. But I can also walk up to anyone and start a conversation with them.

Are you worried about something? I am quite sure that your confidence is suffering from social or emotional bruises. Get over that thing! You will be okay.

Your brand of introversion seems unhealthy. Dysfunctional. So it will prompt me to probe deeper.

Were there some significant events that happened in your life or family during your adolescence that deeply changed you and made you both introverted and socially disconnected? That could be the dysfunctional turning point.

Read one comment above about how you can't change your gene. Hogwash.

Genes are not nature. It"s the environment (what happens in our lives, beliefs, perceptions, events) that controls gene expression.

There are 2 kinds of environments that can change gene expression(how you turn out in life). The one that encourages growth and love and the other that encourages fear and protection.

You seem to have been impacted and changed by the later environment some time in your adolescence. So it makes you want to hide, afraid, resist, afraid to reach out, afraid to shine, afraid to be yourself, shy.

Did what I just wrote make sense to you?

what you wrote here is really spot on. I think there was a time when i was in js2 when a friend of mine and I where doing a talent show in class and when he performed everyone liked him but once I got on stage everyone was looking at me with disgust and asked me to leave. After that some friends stopped talking to me and I just started being on my own.

How I changed
I became a host AKA usher in Church...U know how big hillsong church is right? Yea.. so I signed in to be the one giving seats to worshippers..

It practically helped during my presentations, job interviews etc... I never liked wedding but a friend wedded about 3yrs ago, the MC while they danced for 5min, asked people to join the couple on the floor, no one was willing,
I checked myself.. I looked really cool.. I just joined them....then everyone started coming out... if it was those days nothing will ever make me come out...
Introvert is good but sometimes you find yourself lonely in a crowded place... which some might mistake u to be proud

That traumatic memory is buried in your subconscious and has affected how you see the world and your behaviours in it. You see the world as unsafe, unfriendly, maybe even dangerous.

This explains many of your illogical behaviours.

You are mentally and psychologically stuck in that event/in that childhood.

You might need to see a therapist to free yourself from the hold of this.
