At five-thirty a.m., I woke up. I remembered the dream. Now, what kind of dream was that? This was the second time I would be having a dream in which I was warned about my relationship with Lara. This second dream was worse, as there was a supposed pronouncement of judgment. The dream looked so real, but it was all nonsense. How could Steph or her so-called friends think they could intimidate me?

I shook my head. They must be a bunch of jokers. I went to the toilet to ease my bowels. Thereafter, I brought the mouth brush I had brought along and applied toothpaste. I was brushing my teeth when Lara woke up.

‘Good morning, darling,’ she greeted.

‘Good morning, Love.’

Later, we had a bath together. We dressed up and prepared for office. I drove her first to her Alausa office before driving to my office. The fact was the two offices were barely five kilometers apart. I started my work in earnest. About nine a.m., Mandy came to my office.

‘Well done, Alex,’ she greeted.

‘Thank you, Mandy. Hope all is well.’

‘Yes. We thanked God. How was your weekend?’

‘You asked when you first came to the office and I said fine,’ I answered.

She sat down. That meant she wanted to chat.

‘You look radiant,’ Mandy said. ‘Has your wife returned to the house?’

I smiled. ‘Are you saying I can only look radiant if my wife has returned?’

She smiled too. ‘Not exactly. I’m only asking.’

I briefly thought over how best to answer her. ‘Well, the fact is she is not yet back in my house.’

She nodded. ‘Yet, you look radiant. That means another lady is taking care of you.’

I stopped my smile. ‘What are you insinuating, Mandy?’

‘I’m not insinuating anything. Tell me, did you spend the weekend with that lady that came to see you on Friday?’

I became angry. What was all this? Why was everyone suddenly policing and putting me under surveillance? Can’t a man lead his own life?

‘You have no right to be monitoring me,’ I said heatedly.

‘Don’t be angry, Alex,’ she quickly put in. ‘I just think I should tell you to be careful so that another lady will not lead you into temptation.’

‘Thank you for your advice,’ I replied, still indignant.

She stood up and left.

I sighed. I could not understand it. From Juliet to Enny, Steph, and now, Mandy, everybody was interested in how Alex was leading his life. Couldn’t they just let me be?

By noon, I realized I was having a slight headache. I asked the office assistant to buy some analgesics for me. I took the drugs and continued
with my work. About three o’clock, Lara called to ask me what I would like to have for dinner.

‘Lara dear, I don’t think I’ll be coming over today. I think I should try to see Enny again and explain things to her.’

‘Oh.’ She sounded disappointed. ‘Okay, Alex. Take care of yourself.’

‘Thanks, dear Lara.’

I closed exactly five p.m. the headache had not subsided. Rather, it was joined by some pain in my knee and elbow joints. Besides, I had started coughing intermittently. I drove straight home. I actually had no intention of trying to see Enny, as I wanted to avoid seeing that her mother as much as possible. What I planned to do was to call and try to explain myself.
I made the call to Enny few minutes to six. Thank God she picked her call this time.

‘Is that you, Enny?’ I asked.

‘Yes.’

‘Good. Please, listen to me. I’m so sorry for whatever I’ve done. The last time you came, if you had told me you would be coming, I would have come home on time. I wasn’t home because that home is empty without you, and I’m so bored. Try to understand, and stop listening to whatever your mum is saying.’

‘Are you now blaming my mummy for your inadequacies?’ she asked.

‘No. That’s why I started by apologizing. All I’m saying is you should not allow your mother to decided your affairs with your husband. You must have your own mind.’

‘Are you saying I should allow you to do whatever you want to do?’

‘Oh God, no. You need to come back home, first and foremost. Don’t you realize that this your absence can make a man start eyeing another lady?’

‘Is that your reason for that night out on Saturday?’

‘No. All I’m saying is ..’

She interrupted me. ‘Alex, I’m sorry I’m not interested in the marriage again.’

‘What!’ I was shocked. ‘Tell me you’re joking.’

‘I’m serious, Alex. I’m tired of your lies and unfaithfulness.’

She interrupted me. ‘Alex, I’m sorry I’m not interested in the marriage again.’

‘What!’ I was shocked. ‘Tell me you’re joking.’

‘I’m serious, Alex. I’m tired of your lies and unfaithfulness.’

‘No, you don’t mean it Enny. You’re joking!’

‘I’ll consult a lawyer for the divorce proceeding, and we’ll contact you. Bye, Alex.’

The line went dead. I couldn’t believe what I had heard. This must be another bad dream.

I put the phone down. The headache had intensified. I was in a mess. I went to the bathroom and poured some water on my head. Then I briefly looked at myself in the mirror. The face I saw was a handsome, zealous young man. The mirror could not reflect my inner turbulence and psychological stress.

I went back to the sitting-room and lay on the sofa. I tried to calm my mind, so that I would think rationally. I remained on the sofa for several minutes. Why was I giving myself unnecessary stress? I asked in my mind. I reached some decisions. If Enny said she wanted to go, let her go.

The world would not come to an end because she quit the marriage. I had tried my best to bring her back to the house, but if she – and that her mother – felt this was the best solution, then let it be so.

My mind went to Steph. Now, despite all her enthusiasm, I knew that marrying her would be a big hurdle. Her mother had warned that I should stop nursing the idea. I would not like to cross path with Madam B, my benefactor.

Besides, these dreams I had about Steph were unsettling. As much as I would like to discard them as mere dreams, something at the back of my mind was warning that they should be taken seriously. I was confused right now about what to make of Steph.

From Steph, my mind went to Lara. Could I honestly say I loved her? If I had not been driven by the circumstance, would I have chosen Lara as the lady to spend the rest of my life with? Again, I could not give a concrete answer. It looked like the three ladies that were playing prominent roles in my life were actually causing me more discomfort than adding value to my life. Or, maybe it was all my fault. I was probably the one
that was confused and purposeless.

I cooked noodles and boiled some eggs. That was my meal that evening. The following morning, I realized I had not heard from Steph for some days now. That was unlike her. I decided I would call her later in the day. My headache had gone, but the pain in the knees and on the elbows remained. In addition, I was also having back ache. Could it be my escapade with Lara and those strenuous exercises I had with her that had brought the pains? I was confused there. So much confusion I was having these days.

Few minutes to one, I called Steph. I was surprised her mobile number was not going. I would call back later. I didn’t hear from Lara, but few minutes after three o’clock, she came to my office.

‘Lara, dear. Good to see you.’

‘Hi, Alex.’

She was quick to notice how I looked. ‘You look stressed, Alex, darling.’

‘I’ve not been feeling so well. It started with headache, now, it’s back ache and pain on my joints.’

‘Oh, sorry. Maybe you should go to the hospital.’

‘I may have to do that, but I’m still using some pain-killer drugs.’

‘Be careful about self-medication, Alex.’

I nodded. ‘Yeah, I’ll be careful.’

‘Enny has finally called me,’ I informed Lara.

‘When is she coming home?’

‘She said she’s not coming home again.’

‘What?’

I sighed. ‘She’s filing for a divorce.’

Lara looked surprised. ‘I thought you were about to settle with her.’

‘That’s what I thought too. It must be her mother. She’s the one influencing her.’

She genuinely looked sympathetic. ‘Sorry to hear that, Alex.’

‘Thanks. It’s alright, I’ll survive.’

I smiled at her. ‘Can I get you anything?’

‘No. Don’t bother. Thanks.’ She sat on one of the visitors’ seats and stared at me.

‘So, what will you do now?’ she asked.

I shook my head. ‘Honestly, I don’t know yet.’

I sat back to finish the work I was doing when she came in.

‘She may still change her mind, Alex. Some women are like that.’

I shrugged. ‘I hope it won’t be late before she does so.’

I remained at work and Lara remained with me until four thirty when I decided to close for the day. We went down to my car.

‘Don’t you think you should come over to my place for now? You need someone to care for you dear,’ Lara said. I paused to consider what she said, and shrugged. What was there to lose again?

‘Alright, we’ll go to my house to pack some clothes that I can wear for some days, then we’ll go to your place.’

‘Alright. Good idea. I will use that opportunity to know your house.’

I drove out of the place to Ketu. I switched on the car radio and we listened to the live programme on the F.M station. Twenty minutes later, I parked the car in my compound.

‘Here we are,’ I said.

We got out of the car and I led her to my flat.

‘It’s a lovely place,’ Lara said the moment she stepped inside the sitting-room.

‘Thanks.’ I went to the bedroom while she waited in the sitting-room. I liked that from her. At least, she acted like she was still in someone’s matrimonial home. Quickly, I packed four shirts and two pairs of trousers. I also took some boxers, singlet, t-shirts and some shorts. I added my pam slippers and a pair of brown shoes. Those should be okay, after all I didn’t plan to totally relocate to Lara’s house.

I returned to the sitting-room. Lara stood up and made to take my bag from me.

‘Let me help you with that,’ she offered.

‘Oh, no. Don’t worry, Lara, dear. Let’s go.’

We left the flat and I locked the place. In another twenty-five minutes, we were in Lara’s place. I sat in the sitting-room while she took my bag to her bedroom. She was soon back. She switched on the television set.

‘You must eat something, dear,’ she said. ‘What can I get you?’

‘Maybe, later,’ I said.

‘When last did you eat?’

The truth was I had eaten only once in the office that day. I had not even finished the food. I realized that I was losing appetite.

‘I ate in the office,’ I replied simply.

‘It’s time you had another meal,’ she said. ‘I don’t want you to be sick.’

I shook my head. ‘I won’t be sick,’ I said. I suddenly remembered the dream I had the previous day in which I was threatened to be afflicted.

No, that was a silly dream.

‘Come and change from your office wear.’

‘That’s true.’ I followed her to the bedroom to change into shorts and t-shirt. She too changed into a t-shirt and short. We returned to the
sitting-room.

‘How about the pain?’ she asked.

‘The leg pain and the back pain is still there.’

‘I’ll go to a chemist shop not far from here to get you some drugs.’

‘Sorry to be troubling you,’ I said. I dipped my hands in my pocket and brought out some money. ‘I don’t know how much they will cost, but
have this.’

‘Don’t worry, I’ll get them for you.’

‘Please, I insist that you should take the money for it.’

She paused slightly. ‘Okay.’ She took the money and went out. I sat relaxingly. I remembered Steph and decided to try and call her again.

Something must be wrong somewhere, I thought when I realized that I could not get through to her again. It was never as difficult to call her like this. As a matter of fact, she would have called before now.

Lara returned with some drugs.

‘All these drugs?’ I asked, amazed.

‘Yes. You must get well fast, Alex, dear.’ She smiled reassuringly. ‘But, first, I must get you something to eat. Fried rice and chicken should be okay, right?’

I nodded. ‘Yes.’

She nodded too. ‘Let me go and start preparing it.’ She left me for the kitchen.

I changed the channel to a sports one and watched an old European league football match. Few minutes later, she came to rejoin me. ‘The food is on the fire,’ she announced. ‘Don’t worry, it won’t take long for it to be ready.’

‘Yes, well done.’

She sat by my side. ‘What exactly is your plan for Enny?’ she asked. ‘Will you give her the divorce or not?’

I sighed. ‘I don’t know yet.’

‘Because the judge will ask you if you really want to let her go or not.’

I thought briefly. I wanted Enny, I had no doubt in my mind. I wanted Enny to remain in my life, but I abhorred the roles played by her mother.

‘If she can stop being so influenced by her mother, I want her back,’ I said. ‘But right now, I’m not too pleased over the fact that she is tied to the apron string of her mother.’

Lara nodded. ‘The problem will arise if she insists she doesn’t love you anymore. The judge will still give time for possible reconciliation of the two of you, but if that fails, the judge will have no other option than to dissolve the union.’

I shook my head. I never would have imagined that my marriage would end so soon. I shook my head again. ‘Somehow, I believe the divorce threat will not materialize. She’s probably bluffing.’

‘Well, let’s see how the things play out.’

She excused herself to check what she was cooking in the kitchen. I imagined Lara as my wife. She wasn’t a bad wife material, I decided. But
then, I knew Lara could only play substantive wife role if there was complete failure in reconciling Enny and me. As for Steph, the answer would always be no.

Forty minutes later, Lara brought the food. Once again, we didn’t go to the dining table to eat. I did not really have appetite, but with Lara’s prodding, I was able to eat satisfactorily. Thereafter, I took the dose of the drugs she had procured for me.

For the next four days I was staying in Lara’s house, there was no love making. In any case, I appeared to be getting weaker while the pain in my joints and back continued. On Friday, I decided to drive straight to the clinic our staff used.

I wanted to drop Lara at her place of work as usual, but she insisted on following me to the staff clinic.

‘What about your place of work?’ I asked in concern.

‘That will be no problem. I’ll tell them that I’ll be late in coming to work.’

We waited patiently for my turn to see the doctor. I told him the problem and how the pain had intensified over the days.

‘Did you fall off anything?’ He asked. I replied in the negative. He asked some other questions. Thereafter, he said I would be required to do some scanning and an x-ray. I did them, but would have to come back for the results. Meanwhile, he prescribed some drugs for me.

After that, Lara said I shouldn’t bother driving her to her place of work as she would take a cab.

I drove slowly to my office.

‘There you are,’ Mandy said when I got there. ‘Many visitors have been waiting to see you. How is that pain now?’

‘Manageable,’ I replied. I had earlier called her that I would be going to the staff clinic. I went to my office and attended to all those visitors waiting. By ten o’clock, I had a respite as the work slowed down.

I had no doubt that all was not well with me, health-wise. The kind of pain I had felt in the last few days was a kind of pain I had never felt before. My ill-state was made worse by the fact that I kept losing appetite and was beginning to drop weight.

I refused to believe that the dream I had about Steph had anything to do with my condition. It was just a bloody coincidence, I felt. The only thing that really puzzled me was the fact that I had not been able to speak with Steph since I had the first dream. All my efforts to call her number had been fruitless, yet she would not call me. My messages to her e-mail and Facebook were not replied. Yesterday, when Madam B had called me, I had asked if all was well with Steph and she had answered in the affirmative. Why then had Steph refused to call me? Why was her number no longer going?

As for Enny, I was yet to also hear anything further from her. I had not called her since the day she said I should be expecting her filing of divorce. As it was, I no longer had any fear over whatever decision anybody felt like taking.

The routine now was to go with Lara to her house after close of work. She would come to my office and we would go to her home together. She was very helpful in taking care of me and had shown a lot of concern and affection. That Friday, around noon, Mandy was in my office for a chat.

‘I hope you’re getting better, Alex,’ she said.

I had decided to be positive in my thinking and responses.

‘Yeah, I’m getting better,’ I replied.

‘But you need to eat well,’ she observed. ‘You’re losing weight fast.’

I grinned. ‘Thanks. I’ll try to eat well.’

‘Your wife has still not returned?’

‘No, she has not.’

‘Is she not aware that you’re not too well?’

‘I don’t think she is aware.’

Mandy sighed. ‘So, she is still angry and refuses to come home. Meanwhile, another lady is about to snatch her husband away.’

I refused to respond to her insinuation.

‘Any way, take care of yourself, Alex.’

‘Thank you, Mandy.’

Later that Friday, Lara was in my office by two o’clock. She waited until after four before we left my office together. I drove to her home as I
had been doing in the last few days. The pain in my body had started affecting my movement as I had to walk a bit slowly now. The back pain was the worst. Sometimes, the pain would be so excruciating I would feel like the backbone was about to break. It was a very nasty experience.

On Saturday, I went to get the results of the scan and x-ray. The most amazing part of it all was that the results all showed that nothing was wrong with me. If nothing was wrong, how come I was feeling so much pain?

When I returned to Lara’s flat and showed her the results, she too had been shocked.

‘Nothing was wrong?’ she exclaimed. ‘How could they say nothing was wrong while you keep experiencing pain?’

‘I wonder too.’

‘Are you sure their results are real?’

I remembered when I did the semen test there sometime ago. I had not believed their report and had gone for tests elsewhere, but the results turned out to be the same. Would this be a similar case?

‘Any way, let me use the drugs the doctor prescribed and see what will be the results. If there is no improvement, then, I’ll go to another hospital for fresh tests and treatment.’

She nodded in agreement. ‘Come. Come and take your breakfast and take the drugs. Your breakfast is ready.’

She led me to the dining table. A breakfast of very rich cornflakes was waiting for me. Despite my lack of appetite, I was able to eat substantially. I took the drugs thereafter.

‘I’ve got some balm and lotion that I’ve been told are good for pain and ache,’ she said. ‘Let me massage you back and legs.’

‘Oh, Lara, you’re such a darling; going through all these troubles for me.’

‘That’s what friends are for,’ she replied, smiling.

We went to the bedroom where I wore only boxer as I lay on the bed. Slowly, purposefully and efficiently, Lara rubbed my back, my knees and my elbows.

‘This should help, Alex dear,’ she was saying.

‘You know one thing? You remind me of my mother.’

‘Really?’

‘Yes. She does things like this.’

‘I’m just trying to get Alex very active again.’ She smiled and winked.

‘Just look at you.’ Despite my state, I touched her boobs.

‘Hey, don’t start what you cannot finish,’ she warned.

‘Who told you I can’t finish it?’

‘Are you sure you can finish it?’

‘Is there a crime in trying?’

‘Are you really sure about that, Alex?’

‘Let me try and see.’ My hands fondled her bust.

‘Wait.’

She got up and removed the night wear she was still wearing. ‘Maybe you should remain in that lying position,’ she suggested.

‘Okay.’

She partially placed herself on me. We kissed gently and softly. After a couple of minutes, I shook my head.

‘Oh poor Alex,’ I muttered.

‘What’s that?’ she mumbled.

‘I must be really, really weak,’ I said. ‘Even my joystick is too weak to react.’

‘Let’s try again,’ she offered. We kissed again. Her hands went inside my boxer and she tried to arouse the organ there, but to no avail.

Several minutes later, it was the same result. She smiled kindly. ‘Don’t worry, we’ll try another time.’

‘Okay.’

She lay naked by my side and held my right hand.

‘What’re you thinking about?’ she asked.

‘Nothing.’

‘You can be thinking of nothing, Alex.’

‘Alright, nothing of importance.’

Her right hand ran over my chest.

‘Did I disappoint you?’ I asked.

She giggled. ‘Oh, come on Alex. Everything is not about sex.’

I nodded. ‘This has never happened to me before.’

‘It’s alright. I believe it’s that pain.’

I turned to stare at her. She stared right back.

‘There’s something I’ve been fighting, Alex.’

I frowned slightly. ‘Fighting? What could you be fighting?’

‘I’ve been fighting against it seriously, but I can’t fight it anymore.’

I was puzzled. ‘What are you fighting, Lara?’

She paused for a long time. I waited.

‘I’ve been fighting falling more and more in love with you. I mean, seriously fighting it. But, I think I’m losing the fight.’

I quickly shook my head. ‘Do not let us complicate issues, Lara.’

‘Is that all you can say to someone falling more and more in love with you?’

‘See, you have to stop that feeling. I don’t want to break your heart. I’m a bad guy, can’t you see?’

She broke into laughter, to my surprise. ‘What’s so funny?’ I asked.

‘It’s better you don’t talk like that, because the more you do, the more I’ll fall in love.’

‘It must be lust, Lara,’ I replied. ‘I’m guilty too. The two of us have fallen in lust with each other.’

‘Maybe you have lust for me, but what I have for you is not lust, Alex.’

I sighed and shook my head. ‘I really appreciate how you have cared for me, Lara, but I think the two of us should not venture into anything
more serious. It will cause nothing but hurt.’

She closed her eyes and said nothing. ‘I’m sorry if I gave any false hope. I’m so sorry,' I said.

She opened her eyes. ‘Does that mean I mean nothing to you?’

‘No, no, no, Lara, you mean so much to mean. I’ll never forget you. You’ve been wonderful. You came into my life when things were down and
you’ve lifted me up. But seriously, you deserve a better guy. You don’t deserve a guy whose wife is threatening to divorce him because he has a
baby from another lady. Alex is a confused and unserious guy. There’re better guys out there.’

She closed her eyes again.

‘Lara, baby. Perhaps, for you not to feel that I’ve just used you, or that I’m just using you, we can settle the matter in this way.’

Her eyes opened. ‘What way?’

I held her hands. ‘See, I can compensate you. I can give you some money for all your caring.’

Her eyes popped out. Then, she did something I never expected. She removed her hand from mine and gave me a hot slap.

‘What?! I held the left ear she had slapped.

‘How dare you trivialize how I feel? I’m pouring my heart to you, and you’re talking about money. Do you take me for a prostitute, or what?’

She was angry. Her glaring eyes showed that. She got up from the bed, put on her night wear and stormed out of the bedroom.

I was too shocked to say anything. Had Lara just slapped me? That was a record she had made: no lady had ever slapped me before. I rubbed
my ear and remained on the bed. Now, I could fell some pain there too, in addition to the other pain.
But, I was just trying to make her feel that she had not been used and dumped. I was actually thinking of compensating her with something substantial. How was I to know that she would react this way?

But Lara was back few minutes later. She came to the side of the bed. I was surprised to see tears in her eyes. Women are wonderful, are they
not? She was the one that did the slapping; she was the one crying!

‘I’m sorry,’ she said, sobbing.

I sat up on the bed and hugged her. ‘It’s okay, Lara.’

She rubbed the ear she had slapped. ‘I’m so sorry. I should never have done that.’

‘It’s okay,’ I repeated, trying to smile it off.

‘Maybe you should slap me back.’ She raised my hand to her ear.

‘Oh, no. There’s absolutely no need for that.’

‘I’m sorry, my love.’

I held her in my arms again. ‘It’s okay, Lara.’

We remained like that for a very long time.

Later in the afternoon, Lara and I were in the sitting-room watching television. She would have placed her head on my lap as she was wont to
do, but the pain I experienced had put a stop to that, for now.

I tried once again to call Steph, but the line was not going. I concluded that it was either she had changed her line, or something. But, even if she had, why she didn’t call me or respond to my messages on the social media was a puzzle.

Few minutes after I tried calling Steph, I got a surprise call from Enny.

‘You have no shame, Alex,’ she started. ‘No shame at all. I feel disgusted by you.’

I was thrown off balance. ‘What’re you talking about, Enny?’

‘Just look at you. You have completely abandoned your home for a slut. Are you not ashamed of yourself?’

‘Hey, watch your tongue, Enny! I was never with any slut!’

‘Then, you must be with a Reverend Sister!’

‘Why’re you bothered with who I’m with? Didn’t you say you’re filing for divorce?’

‘Shame on you, Alex!’

And she cut the line. Amazing. Women would not stop amazing me. Just a while ago, I received a slap from Lara. Without saying anything or reacting in any way, she came crying and apologizing. For Enny, she had said she wanted out of the marriage, yet she was bitterly complaining about who I related with.

‘Your Enny?’ Lara asked.

‘Yes. She won’t stop accusing me of sleeping around.’

‘Hmn.’ Lara said. Whatever that meant.

About ten minutes later, the sitting-room door was opened to reveal a lady with a traveling bag.

‘Maggie!’ Lara exclaimed.

‘Lara baby!’

Lara got up to give the lady that had just come in a brief hug.

‘Hey, look at you,’ Lara said. ‘Abuja must have treated you so well. See the way you dey shine.’

‘Hey, Lara. You don’t even need to tell me. I can see that somebody has been taking good care of you. You look livelier and more beautiful.’

‘That one is the work of God o.’

Maggie looked at me and winked at her friend.

‘Meet my good friend,’ Lara told her, pointing at me. ‘Maggie, this is Alex. Alex, meet Maggie.’

I stood up to shake Maggie’s hand.

‘It’s a pleasure to meet you, Maggie.’

‘How do you do, Alex?’

‘Alex has been around for some days now,’ Lara explained. ‘He has been keeping me company.’

‘I can see that,’ Maggie said meaningfully.

I sat down again and Lara came to perch at my side.

‘Hmn, hmn. Let me drop my bag in my bedroom,’ Maggie said and left the sitting-room.

I turned to Lara. ‘I hope I won’t be disturbing anything.’

Lara made a face. ‘What will you be disturbing? She has her bedroom, and I have mine.’

Maggie soon came back to the sitting-room to rejoin us. She was now in a bum shot and a brace.

‘Any food in the house?’ she said. ‘I’m famished.’

‘Sorry, but there are foodstuffs in the kitchen,’ Lara said.

Maggie sighed and left for the kitchen.

Lara held my hand. ‘You’ve not told me what you want for lunch,’ she reminded.

‘I can’t even think of any food, right now.’

‘You need to eat well, Alex. You need to eat well and get well as you used to.’

‘Okay, I’ll eat anything you prepare.’

She squeezed my hands. ‘Let me join Maggie in the kitchen. I’ll be back.’
