EASTERN NIGERIA AND THE HYPOCRISY OF RESTRUCTURING.

Do you know that when Tafawa Balewa was the Prime Minister of Nigeria;

Chief of Army Staff was from the East
Chief of Naval Staff was from the East
IG of Police was from the East
Chief of Defence staff was from the East
Internal Affairs Minister was from the East
External Affairs Minister was from the East
Education Minister was from the East
Many other key Ministers also came from the East
President of the Parliament, from the East
Unilag VC from the East
University of Ibadan VC from the East
The North resisted same at ABU!

Still there was dissatisfaction by Easterners, such that the military officers from the region conspired and killed this same Tafawa Balewa. !!!!

Out of all the most senior officers in Nigeria, the Eastern region had 37, none was killed. 8 from the North, all of them were killed. 10 from the West, 2 were killed.

Then Aguiyi Ironsi imposed a unitary system of government on the country so that everything that belonged to the regions can be snatched and controlled from the center.

We must know our history so that when we want to make corrections, we will not end up concealing the truth. This has nothing to do with tribalism but everything to do with the truth.....in such times like now, when lies litter the streets.

These are documented facts!

Thou shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Prof. Ben Nwabueze was the man who drafted the constitution that took away powers from regions and handed it to the central govt because his brother Aguiyi Ironsi was the Head of State. Today, he is shouting restructuring, forgetting that it was himself who structured the current arrangement. We won’t forget. Let those who have ears, hear.

WHAT IS NEEDED IN NIGERIA IS NOT THE SO-CALLED RESTRUCTURING OR RESOURCE CONTROL BUT FOR US AS A PEOPLE TO RESTRUCTURE OUR MINDSETS AGAINST HATE, GREED, BIGOTRY AND CORRUPTION.

Therefore, let’s join the PMB-led Federal Government to build a strong nation, Nigeria, that is bonded by love, peace and unity.

They said that Igbos were greedy and conducted a coup. To this day, they keep talking about it. But here are some interesting facts:

1) When Igbos declared their own country and went their way, it was the same Nigeria that decreed war and came to fight for 3 years to bring Igbos back into "one Nigeria"

2)They said that Ironsi took away powers from the Regions and introduced unitary rule. But those who came after Ironsi did far much worse. They not only took even more powers than Ironsi did, they went a step further to abolish the 4 regions and create states, thereby making Nigeria far more unitary than Ironsi

3)They said that Igbos conducted a coup and killed people from other Regions. What they never say is that others coups that followed were far more bloody.

Yorubas and their Nothern cohorts have been running Nigeria for over 50 years and messed Nigeria up. They did far worse than Igbos ever did but they will be the ones that keep calling out Igbos.

Igbo officers sowed the wind, it backfired...they then decided to run away from the whirlwind by declaring Biafra...the rest is history. Ironsi and co decreed "one Nigeria," you go enjoy the "one Nigeria" nah.

Yea, "those who came after Ironsi" perfected Ironsi's idea and created more states for their own benefits! What the heck was wrong with that? Were Ironsi's intentions in the first place not beneficial to his kinsmen?

3)They said that Igbos conducted a coup and killed people from other Regions...

Get this, Ironsi and those who supported the Unification Decree were myopic, self-serving morons who created this current mess. Why didn't Ironsi just leave the regions as they were with their autonomy. Nooo! He needed to invade the Northern Civil Service with his kinsmen and dominate the "backward" Northern Region, just because he was the Supreme Commander of the Nigerian Army! But when power changed hands, the slogan was no longer "one Nigeria" but "Biafra or death!"

Go and read up on Nigerian history. The declaration had nothing to do with the coup, it had everything to do with Gowons refusal to honour the Aburi agreement he signed in Ghana

Compare Ironsi to Gowon:

Ironsi kept the 4 Regions he inherited, Gowon came in and abolished the 4 Regions and created 12 states. Other Military leaders continued Gowons "state creation" and we have 36 states today.

Ironsi maintained resource control/and fiscal responsibility for the 4 Regions. Each Region kept 50% of what they produced, Gowon came in and scrapped resource control and changed the revenue sharing formular. Today, states are begging for 13% when it was 50% under Ironsi

What is funny about the whole thing is that the Northerners said one of the biggest reasons for removing Ironsi was the unification decree, they came in and enacted decrees that were far worse than Ironsi's unification decree. The Northerners and their Yoruba cohorts have done far worse than Igbos or Ironsi ever did and have lost the moral right to criticise Igbos

Only the counter coup of July 1966 is arguably bloodier than the January 1966 coup. Please, read your history books before attempting to talk about history.

I used arguably because the counter coup killings got mixed up with the ethnic cleansing that it generated.

You said Northerners and Yorubas messed up Nigeria? How did Nigeria fare when the petroleum sector and the economy were in the hands of two Igbo women?

An Igbo man was Vice President from 1979 to 1983 but that administration has been regarded as excruciatingly corrupt, second only to the GEJ administration.

What about the likes of Wagbara, Okadigbo, etcetera.

The counter coup was far more bloody, the coup that killed Murtala was far more bloody, Orkas coup was far more bloody. Even the coup that made Buhari military head of state was far more bloody. Nobody is talking about those one, they dwell on the first coup

The Northerners and Yorubas messed up Nigeria, they have held executive power for much of the last 50 years. Where is Nigeria today?

Ministers, vice-president or whatever are all subordinate to the president so mentioning them is of no use.

Yourubas and Northerners have held the presidency for majority of the last 50 years and messed everywhere up

The first coup killed the president, Half of the premiers, many top military leaders except those from the east,

Show us any coup that killed president and half of state governors as a start

Ironic that the people who destroyed the structure with tribalism, first coup and unitary decree are the ones wailing now

You don't need a prophet to tell you that the OP is from the North where the highest opposition for restructuring is from!!!

One would ask, what are they afraid of

It's not as if the restructuring team will comprise of a particular people from a particular colour, race or tribe undecided

What is the justice in having a president only from the North

Oilwells belonging to individuals who have no knowledge or contributes to the source of the oil

What is the justice in Fulani herdsmen not paying tax still damage other people's source of income, kill and destroy everything in their way

What is right about all these

If you ALL believe in this unity you are shouting upandan let there be restructuring or another fresh agitation will start!!!

It is you who needs to check history books and not the guy you quoted.

Gowon honored the Aburi Accord to the letter. A misunderstanding concerning political systems caused the disagreement that led to the war. Ojukwu's broadcast of his sheer misunderstanding concerning the political system proposed caused the Aburi Accord to be discarded.

You can't exonerate Ojukwu while demonizing Gowon.

Tell me one aspect of the Accord that Gowon refused to follow?

Gowon broke the most important point of the Aburi agreement.

One of the 12 points agreed in Aburi was that Gowon would not change the structural arrangement of Nigeria unless all 4 military Governors of the time agreed with him. On the 27th of May 1967, Gowon did just that. He announced that the 4 Regions would be abolished and replaced with 12 states, without consulting anybody nor seeking the approval of the 4 Military Governors, as agreed in Aburi. Ojukwu declared Biafra 3 days later on the 30th of May
