Truth be told, I see no reason as to why Igbo's and Yoruba's should consistently keep abusing themselves online. Let me tell you about myself, i met this beautiful and wonderful lady during my nysc camp in Ogun state. She is a Yoruba Muslim and I am an Igbo Christian. This didn't stop us from falling in love, she was my joy and I was same to her. We prayed, discussed and did almost everything together. A day hardly passes by without us talking...we shared everything which bothered us and never hid anything from each other. She is a seamstress and I am into ICT... After service and all I asked her why wait let's get married... But then there was the issue of religion and tribe, our stumbling block. For heavens sake why should a thing like religion or even tribe stop two adults who are in love from being together. We nearly took a crazy measure but then we reconsidered.
You did well noticing that stumbling block (emboldened). A well-known example is Tinubu, who happen to be a Yoruba Muslim and got married to a Yoruba Christian. Same applies to Fashola. I believe the moment religion is about to tear them apart, being of same tribe with their spouses do help calm the situation most often. Moreover, Yoruba Culture is really deep and would always supersede the effect/position of religion amongst many Yorubas.

The summary is "Don't Try It!". Friendship? Yes. Business? Sure! But marriage? Nope!

Nice comment, by the way.

IGBO AND YORUBA are so different and we have nothing in common in everything

Our culture and way of life is different, we don't even think alike. It is even glaring to the dead that we can never be the same and we are different
no one said you should agree or be related to the other side.

All you have to do is unite and fight against the Unprofitable Northern protectorate that has made us southern protectorate communities UNPROFITABLE like them since they grabbed power with the military.

By the way, do you know that this rift between East and west is a well planned northern agenda?
That's what the British colonists taught them.

So REFUSE to be manipulated.

Nigeria will never be great as a country! But, individually, we can make progress! 1914 amalgametion is a curse to the Igbos! I also blame the bastard ZIK for seeking alliance with Ahmadu Bello!
I'm apolitical but do you really think that things would be better? I doubt it

If the North did not exist, do you honestly think the Yoruba's and the Igbo's can dwell peacefully with each other?

What do you think will happen when Igbo's begin to dominate shops and markets in Yorubaland? They won't be happy if Igbos begin to dominate economically. There is bound to be serious grumblings!

Look at what happened at independence. Azikiwe needed to form a coalition as his party scored the highest votes but did not win an outright majority They had a choice between either Awo's party, the Action Group or with Northern party, NCNC. He chose the Northern party and even made them head the government and he was a figure head simply to spite the Yoruba's,

What of the South South where the oil is produced? I'm sure they'll be marginalized but not as badly as the recent past. With Igbo's their nearest neighbours, they are bound to be dominated by them and they despise the Igbo's.

The presence of the North to some extent as made some issues much much easier to swallow

When Abiola complained to his father that his 2 wives were always fighting each other, the father told him to complicate matters by marrying a third wife. Did that resolve the matter? Yes, the 2 wives stopped fighting each other and their sight was now on the 3rd wife grin grin grin

I think you hurriedly made your comment. And as usual of an average Nairalander, most comments are clouded with insults. That is why meaningful discussions others would have learnt from, are sometimes abandoned.

Anyway, it isn't bigotry, at all. Time wasn't available to say more.

No much time for that now either but I will say a little. My point to him bothers on the fact that he, being an Igbo Christian, and his girlfriend being a Yoruba Muslim; would end up forming a combination that would take a lot to stand the test of time.

I intentionally cited politicians as examples because they virtually get away with anything. Even at that, it is the same culture both spouses belong to that successfully prevent what would have ordinarily ended up in a storm. Yet the Nairalander in question isn't a politician.

Can someone swim against the tide? Certainly! But it is not done through mere wishes or pointing to those who once did it. Rather, one must possess enduring strength and the readiness of mind to make several sacrifices that would be required along the way. So if he and his lady are confident that they possess such, then he should go ahead.

The only issue after making that decision is that marriage isn't the same as boyfriend/girlfriend stuff. Once entered, it is almost impossible to get out. Even divorce doesn't guarantee 100% exit, especially when a child is involved. Though a combination of [Igbo Christian and Yoruba Christian] or [Igbo Muslim and Yoruba Muslim] is somehow manageable.

Interestingly, normal combination (same tribe with same religion) requires a lot to stand the test of time these days, let alone such complication.

Exactly. That's exactly what I know. I've Yoruba friends over here, whom I told to save a reasonable amount of money from their tailoring work let me link them with my friends in Malaysia. They were so happy and I'm sure they're getting ready to travel as one just showed me his international passport recently. The verbal vituperations and jingoism is only here on Nairaland. However, most of them have this natural hatred for Ndigbo. When I was yet to build house in Lagos, I could remember vividly how one Yoruba landlord refused to rent his apartment to me , just because I'm omo Igbo. I'm just happy that I've left Lagos with my family, and I'm happy that Igbo's are now adopting "operation head back home".
You have a point here and I can relate.

When I was younger, the normal experience was that some Igbos are ready to accept to pay high rental rate just because they were desperate to rent an apartment, but majority of those who pay this pay for 2 yr or 3yrs initial deposit, but refused to pay afterwards. They can be in the same house they beg to rent for 5yrs+ without paying at all. This discourages many landlord not to rent houses to some Igbos as they can not decipher those who will keep paying and those that will renege on the initial agreement.

You see you cant put all the blame on the landlords alone. Even some Igbo Landlords prefer Yoruba tenants to their Igbo Kinsmen because of this attitude

We all know the truth, everyone is guilty here.

I believe in the late 1980s when the Whites saw that they were losing the fight against apartheid, they tried some sort of divide and rule tactic on the blacks. That was when there was a lot of talk about things like Bantustans etc.

This Claim By Ooni Is Nothing To Write Home About.
Enitan Ogunwusi Has Always Being A Man Of Controversy.
He Had Augued With Alaafin Oyo Countless Times On Who Is Superior Between Him And Alaafin.

I Am Not Surprised In Anyways By His Recent Statement.
But,all I Know Is That "Bi Omode Ko Ba Gbo Itan, oma Ba Aroba, aroba Si Ni Baba Nla Ku Baba Itan".So From What I've Read And Heared From Great Historians, both Local And Foreign, igbos And The Yorubas Has Nothing In Common Related To Family Ties.

Yorubas Has Historical Ties With Edo Not Igbos. And I've Posted A Post On This Platform Clarifying The Historical Ties Between The Yoruba And Igbo, which Was Also Substantiated By Various Add-ons From My Fellow Uncertified Historians Here.
In Conclusion,i Believe Ooni Mis-took
Edo For Igbo.Edo And Igbo Nation Are Two Distinct Nations Please.

I have huge respect for the king. But saying that Igbos originate from Yoruba is neglecting fact which put the Igbos as the oldest tribe in Nigeria. This is backed by archeological findings. The fact still remains Yoruba originated from the Igbos just like the Idomas, Igala, Efik, and so on. If you doubt it please do a little google search on the oldest tribe and read on from there.

The Ooni of Ife, Enitan Ogunwusi, who spoke last weekend at his Ile-Oodua palace in Ile-Ife while receiving the Lagos State president of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Solomon Ogbonna, who had as a member accompanied the delegation of African Farmers And Cultural Organisation on a courtesy visit to the palace, stated that the Igbos and the Yorubas have historical ties.According to the Ooni of Ife, the historical ties between the Igbos and Yorubas makes them inseparable members of the same family. He said at the meeting;

“I am so happy to have the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State President here as part of this empowerment initiative. Lagos is part of Yoruba land, we are all one, we are all the same. The history is there, the facts are there, and we should actually put this facts out. Why are we fighting?”

“This is your root. I said it recently, some of our Yoruba kinsmen with ignorance of our history came out with nugatory beratement of my position on the family ties between Yoruba and Igbo people. We have to say the truth and the truth must set us all free, we are blood brothers. We should be inseparable. Please feel at home in Yorubaland and respect your Yoruba brothers and sisters too.”

"We still have House of Igbo right in this palace till date. We call it Ile Igbo up till now. Our ancestors are buried and transfigured there. That is where kolanut was first discovered and nurtured. The Igbos are still the biggest consumers and users of kolanut which is only planted in Yorubaland till date. Can the Igbos do without kolanut? ”“The ancient Igbo house is one of the most sacred places in this palace till date. One of my brother kings – Aka Arogundabi from Iremo quarters saw the mysteries of house of Igbo (Aka-ri-Igbo). Till date, Akarigbo of Remoland still sees house of Igbo as a common heritage of his forebears,” the Ooni explained.
