When you ask most young people, especially, the female folks, what they desire in a marriage partner, one thing is usually certain - the list would likely begin or end with 'I want a God-fearing man/woman'. This item or requirement on the list usually crowns it all. To such people, it makes the other items valid or worthy, for without it, other things they require from their supposed marriage partners can be thrown away without thinking twice.

We should know that the appropriate picture or image of a Godfearing partner is one who is passionate in his or her religious faith; it is never attached to natural characters. That a person is religious does not make him or her a good marriage partner automatically. People have natural characters which they exhibit from time to time. Such characters have been formed over a long time; they could be good or bad.

That your husband or wife is religious does not make him or her a good desirable partner. Natural characters are very strong and are deeper than what you think.

We should pay more attention to natural traits in others such as trustworthiness, perseverance, tolerance, bravery, caring attitude, hardworking, intelligence, flexibility, civility, etc than religious disposition which is usually vague.

If you have not seen very religious people who are extremely and naturally wicked, I have seen many. If you have not seen very religious people who are chronic cheats in marriage, I have seen many.

I am NOT using this article to say that we should not look out for God-fearing people or people who believe firmly in our religious faith when choosing a life partner, what I am saying in essence is that we should not use that as the overall yard stick to judge suitability in marriage or someone who is likely to make a good or enjoyable partner in marriage. A suitable life partner has more to do with natural/innate characters than whether one is a good Christian, Muslim, Bhuddist, Hindustan, juju worshipper or Judaic.

Lastly, we should not strive to get from others what we cannot give to them. You cannot be a naturally wicked person and be desiring to have a kind person as a life partner. Do not be a cheat and desire to have someone faithful as a life partner.

Well, thank God I have gone past that stage of my life. However, my interpretation of a 'God-fearing' woman when I was searching for a partner doesn't necessarily mean she must be a 'religious' woman.

A God-fearing woman to me is more of a conscientious woman who knows the difference between good and bad; she will love everyone and everybody as herself; and she must be amenable.

the word Godfearing has become the most abused word in naija.most so called Godfearing married men and women a number of them have lovers outside and they dont respect their spouses at home.u will see a Godfearing man beating up his wife cos she dared ask him why he is sponsoring his sidechic's children in school while negleting his children and a Godfearing wife meeting her ex in one hotel across town or performing wifely duties to her pastor while negleting her husband.

Many who claim to be 'Godfearing' are only window-dressing their characters. Godfearing has to do with religion. What you meant is good conscience. Try to find out the meaning of religion and you will discover the connection between religion and Godfearing.

My point is that some people are religious but do not genuinely fear and reverence God. Practising a religion is just following the rules and regulations of Christianity for instance. It is different from having a relationship with God and letting Him be in charge of your life
