Thank you for the update.

Raphael should not be intimidated by the class, since it's from God. Everything will fall in place for him.
Let's see how changed Janet is now, her response will determine.
Re: Victims Of Passion by LoveToRead: 6:05am On Mar 30, 2019
Janet smiled briefly and looked away. There was a long pause. Raphael was very uncomfortable during that long pause. What was she thinking about? If only he could read her mind. A security lady was passing through the corridor. As Janet called her attention, his heart leapt. But, surely Janet would not ask the security lady to march him out of her office, would she?

'Have you given the keys to the head of security?' Janet looked at the gal warmly.

'Yes, ma'am.' The security lady nodded

Raphael sighed.

Janet nodded back at the lady and the latter left them.

She took some time before she finally spoke out. 'Alright. Can you give me some time to think it over? I don't know how long it will take for the
response to come, but I'll surely get back to you.'

'That's okay. Thank you for your time.' He stood up.

'You're welcome.' Another smile was used to dismiss the hopeful lover.

He left her office. It was not yet uhuru but he felt like a big burden had just been lifted from his shoulder.

On the day that Rhoda was expected to leave the house, Nonso left home early in the morning, claiming that he had urgent business to attend
to. When he got to his office which served as the head office of his transport business, he called Osagie one of his trusted hands.

'Osagie, there is this important task I want to give you.'

'Yes, oga.' Osagie was deferential before his boss.

'I want you to look around for where you can rent a room. Just one room, but I want it in a decent house and decent environment. Tell them
the occupant is your sister and is ready to pay for the place and occupy it immediately.'

'Yes, sir.' There was no hesitation in Osagie's response.

He gave Osagie some money. 'Use this to move around. One more thing, my wife or any other person must not know about this.'

'Yes, oga.' Osagie pocketed the money and set out to work.

The music was blazing and there was excitement everywhere. Helen sat close to her friend, Roli, inside the drinking hall. They sipped their
champagne quietly, moving their bodies gently to the fast rhythm music.

The large room was only half full. By seven in the evening, the place would be filled up. l'Apella club was an exclusive one that Helen loved to frequent. Her sister too used to come around once in a while before, but since she embraced her new life, coming to the club had become an anathema. The club did not miss her, in any way

Helen and her friend sat in one corner as they sipped their drinks and took their pepper soup. Helen, Roli and Abi were close friends that used
to come to the place in the past. The moment Abi got married, she stopped coming. Now, the duo of Helen and Roli always came around on
Saturday.

Two men came in and walked straight to their table. The tall one in glasses sat by Helen's side, while the other went for Roli. It was as if they had planned and rehearsed before making their move.

'Good evening, ladies. Hope you don't mind us joining you.' The dude by Helen's side was the first to speak. He smiled in an exuberant way.

Helen shrugged while Roli smiled. The man that had spoken seemed to be pleased.

'Let me introduce myself and my buddy.' He continued to exude exuberance. 'I'm Kenny. The cool guy is Mike. Can we meet you, please?'

Roli and Helen took turn to introduce each other.

Kenny smiled. He spoke in an accent that sounded American, but of course, he was a Nigerian. Mike rarely spoke but anytime he did, there was no doubt that he was from the eastern part of the country. Kenny was obviously interested in Helen and soon concentrated on her.

Kenny said he was based in Atlanta, U.S.A and had only come to Nigeria for vacation. He said he was into computer engineering over there and had a small firm that was not doing badly. He was already in his late thirties and had come to his country to pick a lady that would be his wife. He said he had to go into these details so that Helen would understand his background.

‘So, how can I be of help? Do you want me to match-make for you, or what?’ A half smile danced on Helen's face.

Kenny broke into an easy laugh. ‘Not at all.' He shook his head emphatically. ‘I don’t need you or anyone as a matchmaker when I can play the match myself. The fact is, the moment I saw you, there’s no doubt that I felt and still feel love for you. Now, don’t laugh, please. I’m serious and
I mean it. I know it’s love. I can feel it. Will you give me the honor of taking you as a wifey and moving over to the U.S.A with me?’

He was already in his late thirties and had come to his country to pick a lady that would be his wife. He said he had to go into these details so that Helen would understand his background.

Will you give me the honor of taking you as a wifey and moving over to the U.S.A with me?’

‘Just like that? Are you not rushing things here?’ Wonderment took over Helen.

‘No, I don’t believe I’m rushing things. I’m not saying that tonight or tomorrow, we must do the wedding and travel. No. but if everything clicks, I’ll still go back to the States in a couple of weeks. By the time I come back again in three or four months’ time, it’ll be to formalize everything, arrange the documents and travel.’

She still looked unconvinced. ‘Even at that, things are moving too fast. God, I don’t even know you. I barely met you few minutes ago.’

‘I know, but that’s no problem. You’ll still get to know me –know each other - more and more.’

Kenny gave her his business card. It had foreign addresses and numbers. His e-mail contacts were also there.

“Let me have your number.' The enthusiasm was noticeable. ‘I’ll call you. I’ll also invite you to where I stay, and if you want me to come over to where you live, all well and good. Right now, I stay at Queensland hotel.’

Kenny went on to tell her his hotel room. 'I’m serious, baby. I’m damn serious. We’ve started knowing each other already. That’s important in
relationship, isn’t it? The important thing is to know each other better.’

Helen was overwhelmed by his advances. It was true she needed a life partner, but she was still taking her time after the death of the last
man she should have married. Thinking over Kenny, she wondered what kind of man he was.

Helen could see that Roli and her man too were having intimate chats. Kenny paid for the drinks and the other expenses they incurred at the
club that evening.

‘I’ll definitely call you.' Kenny grinned at Helen as they - the two men - rose to go. After they had gone, Helen and her friend discussed them.
Roli was surprised that Kenny was offering to marry Helen straight off.

'Are you serious? Are you really saying he said he wants to marry you?' Roli did not mask her curiosity.

'Yes. He said in a matter of few months, he wants his wife to come over to America and join him there.' Helen looked excited, despite her
seeming reservations.

'Waoh! I'm happy for you. Mike didn't mention anything like that.'

Helen became cautious again. 'But even all these that Kenny said. Is it not too fast for him to be saying all those things? For God's sake, I
only knew him today.'

'Must you know him for donkey years before he can discuss marriage? Look, Helen, if I were you, I will gladly take the offer.' Roli had said it as
if it was an international job offer.

Helen was thoughtful. You had nothing to lose, she told herself. She believed she must not be bogged down by her past experience.

Life must go on. Besides, she had nothing to fear about any tragedy befalling the man. She had made the sacrifice the baba that Abi took her to, asked her to make. She therefore had nothing to be afraid of.

Three days after Raphael bared his mind to her, Janet called his number and requested that she wanted to see him during the long break. Raphael went to meet her as she desired.

'I'm sorry.' She gave a charming smile. 'I should have come over to the staff room to see you, but this office offers a bit of privacy.'

'I understand and you're right.' He reciprocated the smile as he sat down.

'What do I offer you? Do you want snacks and drinks?'

'No, thanks.'

'Oh, come on, Raphael. We're on break.' She wondered if he was coy or modest. 'Besides, I've not offered you anything before. Anyway, I've
already ordered for snacks.'

Raphael smiled and relaxed. Her warm disposition meant he would get positive news.

The snacks and the drinks were soon brought. She handed his pack to him while she took hers. He put his own on the table while she munched hers.

'What's happening? You don't want to eat in my presence?' Again, she wondered if he was acting out of shyness.

'No, it's not that. But I can't eat right away.'

Just then, she had the idea that he might be fasting. She nodded.

'I think I understand.' She allowed a pause. 'I want to ask you a question.'

'What question?'

'In Christian marriage, is it just about God giving the directives about who to marry? What about love? Doesn't it matter that the two must be
in love?' Her eyes showed anticipation.

'In Christian marriage, is it just about God giving the directives about who to marry? What about love? Doesn't it matter that the two must be in love?' Her eyes showed anticipation.

Raphael forced a smile. He did not, in any way, envisage that he had come for questioning.

'Well.' He hoped he would be convincing. 'I won't call it a directive. I think it's more of God guiding one in making the choice. I believe love is there already. It may not seem obvious, but love will be there.'

"Really? Are you sure about that?' There were some doubts on her face.

'Certainly.' He mustered as much conviction as possible. 'On my part for example, I know I'm in love.'

She raised her eyebrow. 'You didn't say anything like that the other time.' Now, she threw in a challenge.

'I'm sorry I didn't.' He went fully on the defensive. 'I guess I was in a rush to deliver the message. My dear lady, let me assure you of my love
for you. I want to also comment about the change in your dressing which I've noticed. It's a fast departure from what it used to be some months
ago. I really love this your new look. Believe me, you're now more beautiful than ever.'

'Thank you.' She seemed to be very pleased by his comments.

'Okay.' She locked her eyes with his briefly. 'Let's go back to the issue of what you told me. Let me explain something. I'm still new in this my
experience and may not act fast as you may expect. For now, I am yet to confirm what you said. So, I can't say yes or no.'

Janet paused to gauge the response of her listener. The latter looked impassive.

'Why not let us start this way?' She gave a smile to dispel any impending coldness. 'Let's start as good friends. I mean good friends. Through
that, you'll know me better. Maybe I'm even snobbish for your liking. Let's start as good friends. What d'you say to that?'

Raphael smiled. He had expected her to say what she said.

'It's alright.' He had no qualms about that. 'It's a good way to start.'

She smiled. 'Thank you for your understanding.'

'That's alright.' He looked into her eyes. 'Can I hug you?'

'Yes, you can.'

They stood up and hugged briefly.

Two days later, Janet decided to visit his desk at the staff room. She noticed there were many books, ranging from textbooks to dictionaries
and encyclopedia on his table.

Raphael was surprised to see her. He offered her the lone chair in front of his desk.

She shook her head. 'I won't stay for long. I just want to ask, tomorrow Saturday, can I visit you in your house? Will you be around in the
morning?'

His face lit up and beamed in smile. 'Of course. You'll be most welcome.'

She nodded. 'Please, text the address to my phone.'

Things appeared to be in frenzy for the remaining part of that day. Raphael was excited about her coming. That Saturday morning, Raphael scrubbed the tile floor to give it a polished look. He arranged things in the small apartment to at least look befitting. Then, he put some drinks in
the fridge and awaited his August visitor.

It was two minutes to eleven when she came.

'Good morning, sir.' She smiled at him in a jocular reverence.

'Good morning, madam.' It was the only apt response he could think of. 'Welcome to my humble home.' He ushered her inside.

She surveyed the sitting room. 'Small, but nice.' There was approval on her face.

'Thank you.' He grinned in appreciation. 'Please, sit down.'

He sat opposite her and looked at her appraisingly. 'You look good, sister. I like your outfit.'

'Thank you.'

He smiled again, looking at her as if in admiration. But he knew he must not overdo things. 'So, what can I offer you?'

'Maybe later. I just ate something before I left home.'

He would want to give his guest a warm welcome. 'What about drinks? I have fruit juice, malt and mineral drinks. Which one do you want?'

Janet smiled in appreciation. 'Thank you, Raphael. Let me just relax for now. Later, I'll tell you what I want.'

He brought out his photo album and she went through as if she was studying it. Occasionally she would ask who a person was, or on what
occasion the picture was taken.

After going through all the pictures, she sighed and sat back. 'Maybe I can have the drinks now. I prefer the orange juice, please.'

Raphael went to get it for her. He opened the pack and poured it inside the glass cup.

'So, what are your interests? What'd you like to do at your spare time?' She lifted the cup and sipped.

'Reading and writing. I also like good movies.' Indeed, those were his old habits.

She nodded. 'I have almost the same interest.' Then she asked a most unexpected question: 'When was the last time a lady visited this
house?'

Raphael smiled. 'Last Saturday.' His reply came slowly and simply.

Janet made a small face but didn't say anything.

'Becky, the Home Econs teacher from the college was here on a visit.' He watched her countenance as he explained. He noticed that the face
softened a bit.

'Oh.' She shrugged.

Raphael smiled. 'Becky is just a friend.'

She did not say anything after that.

Her stared at her fingers.

'What are you staring at?' Her eyes too went to them.

'Your fingers.'

'What's wrong with them?' She moved them close to her eyes to examine them herself.

'Nothing. I'm just looking at them. They look so tender.'

'Oh.' She smiled and looked relieved.

There was a long pause. The only sound was coming from the television. A drama was shown on the channel.

'You've really made my day.' He smiled pleasantly. 'I'm glad you came.'

'It's a pleasure.' She returned the smile.

They chatted and intermittently watched the television until it was past two o'clock.

'What food can I get you for lunch?' He stood up and moved towards the door.

'Do you have any foodstuffs in the house?'

'Yes. There's is rice, beans and yams.' Even as a bachelor, he liked to prepare his own food.

'Good. I can prepare yam. We can fry eggs with it. She stood up too and moved towards him.

'No, don't trouble yourself self. You're my guest.'

He left the sitting room for the small kitchen. His guest followed him. It was the smallest kitchen she had ever seen. But it was neat and
everything was well arranged.

He brought out a tuber of yam and a knife.

'Let me peel it.' Janet made to take the knife.

'Oh, I don't want to stress you.' He was able to take the knife before she did.

'You're not stressing me. I'm the one that volunteered to do it.' She too held the knife handle.

He was still hesitant.

'Come on. What are friends for?' Her urge was as friendly as it was challenging.

He smiled and let her have the knife.

From the way she peeled the yam, it was obvious she was not used to doing that kind of thing. She worked slowly but carefully, as he
watched. Even at that, he prayed inside him that she would not cut her finger.

'Will you always be with your wife in the kitchen when you're married?' She was about to finish the peeling.

He nodded. 'Yes. Except she doesn't want me to do so.'

'If the baby is crying, will you assist her, especially in the middle of the night?' She paused slightly in what she was doing.

He chuckled. 'Of course. A couple is meant to assist each other.'

'At what age do you want to marry?'

'Once the lady I intend to marry agrees, there will be no point in wasting time.'

'How could you be sure the lady you have in mind will be a good wife?'

'It's the Lord himself that will make her a good wife.' He pointed at heaven.

'But what if she's very demanding? Or her taste is too high?'

He laughed shortly. 'The Lord himself will be in charge of everything. The Lord will make her less demanding and will bring her taste to my
level.'

She laughed too. 'You seem to put everything in the Lord.'

'I don't have a choice. The Lord is my all in all. Without him, you won't even come here in the first place.'

She sighed. 'So, it's the Lord that brought me here?'

'Certainly. Without Him, you wouldn't have come.' He was very certain about that.

'One more question: what if she nags?'

Now, he laughed. 'My dear Janet, I know you will not nag.'

She tried to look stern. 'How could you be so sure?'

'Even if you nag, God will take control.'

She faced him briefly. 'You seem to be so sure I'm the one. What if I'm not?'

'I don't think God makes mistakes.'

She nodded. 'I agree that indeed God doesn't make mistakes. What if you are the one making the mistake?' She had emphasized the word, you.

There was a long pause. She stopped doing what was doing to stare at him.

'Raphael, what if you are the one making the mistake?'

He stared back at her. 'If I realize I’ve made an error, I will apologize.'

'How?'

'First, I will apologize to God for dragging his name into falsehood. Then, I'll apologize to you.'

'Won't you be disappointed?'

'Naturally, I will be.'

She went back to her work. 'Will you still love me?'

'Yes I will.'

'Really?'

'Yes.'

'Thanks.'

'For what?'

'For loving me.'

'It's a pleasure.'

There was another silence for a while.

She finished the peeling, cut the yam into pieces, washed them and put then in the pot. After putting the pot on the portable gas cooker, they
went back to the sitting room.

Later she fried four eggs and they had their meal.

'What d'you say to my little cooking?' She smiled at him. He knew the kind of answer she expected.

In truth, the fried eggs had too much of pepper and salt, but for the fact that Janet prepared the meal, it had the best taste in the world.

'It's the best food I've taken in a long while.' He was as serious as he could be.

She laughed delightedly. 'Are you serious?'

'Yes, I'm very serious.' Raphael meant it. To him, her food was the best in a long while.

After eating, she cleared the plates and washed them.

'Should I tell you one truth?' She arranged the plates in the shelf.

'What truth?'

'You're the first man I ever cooked for.' She dried her hands.

'Really?' His face lit up.

'Oh yes.'

'That's good. I'm a lucky chap.' He laughed.

When it was few minutes to four o'clock she declared her intention to go.

'You don't really know how happy I am for your visit.' He patted her on the shoulder. 'I'm so happy to receive you here.'

She unzipped her handbag and opened it. 'I'm so happy to be here too. I really feel like I've been with a real friend.'

She dipped her hand inside the bag and brought a package.

'I have this little thing for you.' She handed it to him.

He was all smiles as he took it and opened. The package contained Hugo Boss perfume and a Rolex 24 carat gold wrist watch. No one needed
to tell him that the items were very expensive.

He was all smiles as he took it and opened. The package contained Hugo Boss perfume and a Rolex 24 carat gold wrist watch. No one needed to tell him that the items were very expensive.

'No, these are too much. I can't accept them.' He wrapped the package back and tried to return it.

'Come on.' Janet smiled encouragingly.

'Please Janet, when I become your husband, you can even buy a limo for me, but honestly speaking, for now I shouldn't accept these.'

She laughed it off. 'Why shouldn't you? They are gifts from me to you. Don't be a prude, dear. Take them.'

He still hesitated, but finally smiled.

'Thank you so much. I don't know how to thank you enough.'

'You're welcome. What are friends for?'

He nodded. 'Can I hug you?'

'Must you ask before you do so?' Her stance was completely encouraging.

He held her hands and pulled her to himself. She gladly released herself to him. Then he kissed her on the forehead and gave a bear hug. She
clung on to him too. After several seconds, he slowly disengaged from her.

'I love you.' It came out of his mouth as if he was programmed to do so. He felt like kissing her on the lips, but held himself back.

'I love you too.' She was satisfied with her visit. She actually looked forward to seeing him again.

He nodded. 'Once again, thank you for your visit and the gifts.

She waived it off. Raphael accompanied her to her car in seeing her off. He felt elated. Indeed, she had made his day.

Nonso got a room apartment for Rhoda as he had promised. It was the boys’ quarters of a storey building. There were only two of them occupying the place - Rhoda and a young man. The place was neat and decent and that was important to Nonso.

Rhoda was glad at the turn of events. If Madam Rose thought she had succeeded in severing Nonso's life from hers, she was making a big mistake. Rhoda had come into his life to stay and there was nothing anyone could do about it.

Nonso would come to her place from afternoon to early evening. His dear wife thought he was at work. She was yet to know that the girl she
thought she had got rid of was still very much playing active role in his life.

He had also gone ahead to get her a small gas cooker, some pots and other utensils, a big mattress, and a twenty eight inches flat screen.
More things were on the way, he promised.

He called her my dear, and she did the same to him. To the agent who secured the place for her, she was his new wife. Even to her co
tenant, Nonso must have recently married her. Rhoda basked in the euphoria of her new status. She was happy with herself. Things were
working the way she wanted them to work.

As Janet drove away from Raphael's place, she marveled at the experience she had just had. Christianity must be a wonderful experience. So a
lady could visit a guy in his house and be together for hours and all they did was chat without the guy making a move towards having sex?
Wonderful! This was amazing. Why then did some believe that relationship between a guy and a lady must involve sex? Why was it always
difficult to observe abstinence, which really was the best?

Raphael was a model that had proved them wrong.

She mentally compared Emma with Raphael. The two guys were miles apart. Honestly, Raphael looked more like an angel in the comparison. He behaved so decently. Janet did not hear or observe him say a foul thing even once. There was utmost consciousness, conscientiousness and modesty in all that Raphael did. Janet was impressed.

She was still studying him before she would tell him her response to the issue of marriage. Somehow, she believed he would be a good husband. She felt she loved him and had told him so. Why hadn't she given him the green light? Janet smiled at herself. Just a little while, she thought, just a little while.

She drove to the church and had rehearsals with the other choristers. It was after seven in the evening when she got back home.

There was a powerful aroma coming from the kitchen. She could see that Zizi was busy there. Janet climbed the stairs and made for her room. She noticed that music was blaring from Helen's room. She must be in a good mood.

On the spur of the moment, Janet decided to pop in there.

'Hello sister.' She had opened the door without even knocking.

Helen smiled at her and went on to reduce the volume of the sound system.

'There you are. I've been looking for you.' The room effused the air of excitement Helen was happy to see her.

'I went to see a friend and from there to the church.' Janet looked around the room in awe. 'You are very happy. What's the good news?'

Helen's smile widened. 'Sit down. Let me give you the gist.'

Janet sat on the bed. She looked at her sister expectantly.

'Yes, my dear sister. I want to let you know that in a matter of months' time, I will be having my wedding.' Helen pointed at her finger and at
an imaginary ring.

On the spur of the moment, Janet decided to pop in there.

'Hello sister.' She had opened the door without even knocking.

'There you are. I've been looking for you.' The room effused the air of excitement Helen was happy to see her.

Janet sat on the bed. She looked at her sister expectantly.

'Yes, my dear sister. I want to let you know that in a matter of months' time, I will be having my wedding.' Helen pointed at her finger and at
an imaginary ring.

Janet looked shocked. 'What d'you mean?'

'What I said.' Helen warmed up to her story, her face gleaming in excitement. 'In some months' time, I will be doing my wedding. I've a guy
who's seriously in love with me and who's ready to take me to the U.S.'

Janet was amazed. She stared at her sister. 'You've got another man who's proposing so soon?'

'Yes, and what's so soon about it? Shouldn't I move with my life?' Helen moved her head in excitement. 'Sister, shouldn't I move on with my
life?'

Janet was almost happy for her sister, but she felt there was something that ought to be taken care of.

'What about what I told you?' Janet was cautious. 'What about seeing the pastor and praying seriously about your future partner?'

'Yes. You've told me that before and I've told you there's nothing to worry about.' Helen smiled reassuringly. 'That angle has been taken care
of. No more tragedy in that regard, okay?'

'But how?' Janet wasn't convinced. She felt she must bridle her sister's seeming uncontrolled passion. 'What exactly did you do to make you be
so rest assured?'

Helen smiled and came to pat her again. 'You worry so much, little sister. Don't worry about that aspect. When I say don't worry, I mean it.'

Janet decided not to press the issue further. Perhaps, big sister had actually done something to make her be so confident.

She too smiled. 'I wish you the best, sister.'

'Thank you.' Helen began to dance to the music from the sound system.

Janet nodded and left big sister to her excitement.

In about a week's time, the first term examinations of Apez College would be starting. The questions had been set and that was needed for
smooth running of the examinations had been put into place.

The holiday that would come after the examinations would precede the Christmas celebrations. Raphael thought of the days ahead. He was
planning to travel to his home state to spend a short time with his parents.

Becky had not been very friendly with him again, ever since she realized there was something going on between him and Janet. She had even
teased him that affluence factor must have influenced his decision. He tried to disabuse her mind, though she tried to down play it later. Raphael
knew Becky had unconsciously spoken her mind. But he knew her implied insinuation was far from the truth.

Janet was yet to declare her mind to him, although everything pointed to the affirmative. Would a lady who professed love back out in marriage
proposal? That would be odd and outlandish. At all same time, Raphael would not rush her. As long as he had handed the matter to God, he would
patiently wait for her.

There was a particular dimension that Raphael was trying to discourage Janet from. It was her penchant for giving him things. Surreptitiously,
Janet had found out the sizes of his wears - from shirts to shoes. Subsequently, she had been buying things for him. For now, Raphael didn't find
this trend alright. It would make those who think he was a gold digger to have proofs. He had told Janet this.

'I appreciate everything you're doing, my dear.' He looked convincing. 'Seriously, I do appreciate all; but can we put this on hold for now? I
don't want anyone to think I desire this relationship on the basis of what I will gain from it.'

But Janet was adamant. 'It's nobody's business how the relationship goes. You didn't force me to buy them. I volunteer to do so. Let's not

worry ourselves with what busy bodies are saying.'

He did not totally agree with her but kept quiet. If he should try to reciprocate what she was doing, he knew he would not be able to match
her. But, was there any need to compete with her? She was doing it on her volition; and she was able to do so because she could afford it. Why would he want to put himself in a tight corner?

She was doing it on her volition; and she was able to do so because she could afford it. Why would he want to put himself in a tight corner?

His phone rang. The very person he was thinking about was on the line.

'Hello.' He found himself becoming excited.

'Hi.' Her voice was cool.

'How d'you do?'

'I feel down. Since the weekend, I've not been feeling well.'

He was surprised and his feeling of excitement faded off. 'I'm so sorry to hear that.'

'And you didn't even call me.'

'Oh, I'm so sorry, Janet. I didn't know.' He was indeed sorry. 'I thought you were busy on Saturday. On Sunday, we had busy time at the
church. By the time I got home, I was very tired.'

She decided to believe him. He seemed sincere. 'Alright. Apology accepted.'

'I'll come and see you during long break.' He smiled reassuringly and wished she could see him right then.

'That's alright. I'll be expecting you.'

He was with her as he promised. He apologized again for not calling her throughout the weekend.

'So, how is your body now?' He put the back of his right palm on her cheek to feel her temperature.

'I'm better. Thank God.'

'Your temperature seems okay. Yes, we must thank God.' He patted her left shoulder.

She handed a nylon containing fried chicken laps to him. 'Have this.'

'What for?' He opened the nylon and looked at the contents.

'What do people do with chicken?'

He could perceive the tantalizing aroma coming from the nylon. There were about four big pieces there.

'Why don't you eat them? You need more food than I do.'

She gave a smile. 'I've eaten my own.'

'Well, what can I say? Thank you my dear.' He gave her a peck.

'You're welcome.'

He looked inside the nylon again and took a piece from the chicken. He would eat only one for now.

'So, when all you going to reciprocate my visit?' She watched him took a bite of the beef.

Her question did not come to him as a surprise. He knew that sooner than later, she would ask the question.

'Anytime you invite me, I'll come.' He munched the meat.

'Really? Do I need to invite you?' Her stare was challenging.

'Well, the truth is I can't just barge into the house of my employer just like that.'

She chortled. 'No one is asking you to visit your employer.'

'I know, but the house in question belongs to my employer. I couldn't just go to the place like that, uninvited. But, now that you've invited me,
I can come.'

She nodded. 'Very well, can you make it this Saturday?'

He smiled and nodded in turn. 'Why not? Good will spare our lives. I'll be there before noon.'

'You'll be most welcome. Don't worry, your employer will not be upset.'

They laughed over that.

Some hours later in the staff room, Raphael decided to call her. It was just to say hello, he said. She had expressed surprise, pointing out that
it wasn't long ago that they met. They exchanged sweet nothings before he hanged up.

Some hours later in the staff room, Raphael decided to call her. It was just to say hello, he said. She had expressed surprise, pointing out that
it wasn't long ago that they met. They exchanged sweet nothings before he hanged up.

He had decided on an action: he would be calling her constantly. That would show that he cared. It would also be romantic, wouldn't it?

The remaining days to the weekend seemed to move very fast. Raphael looked forward to visiting her. He had not been to the house and he
wondered what kind of place it was. He also hardly knew her father, the owner of the school where he worked. Apart from few occasions when
the man had been around, he could not really say he knew him.

When the day came, Raphael decided to go in t-shirt, brown chinos trousers and black leather slip-on shoes. He used the perfume she bought
for him. There was no doubt that he liked the scents. He looked good in his simplicity. It was time to visit his love.

As soon as he got to the gate and introduced himself, the security man allowed him inside. Apparently, Janet had told the man that he would
be visiting.

The maid took him to the sitting-room downstairs. The room was large and comfortable. The furniture looked exotic, and so were the gadgets
there.

Janet had been expecting him. She soon came downstairs and took him to her room upstairs. Her parents were not around, so there wasn't
anything like introducing him to them.

Her room was large and nice looking. Two seats and a glass table were by the bedside. It didn't take him long to realize she lived a very comfortable life.

He sat on one of these seats. Hardly had he settled down when the house maid came to serve fruit juice. Janet brought her photo albums. It
was the largest collection of personal photographs he had ever seen.

Janet treated him like a special guest. When Zizi came to serve his food, it was like a buffet. Janet tried as much as possible to make him feel at home.

After staying with her for about three hours, he decided to call it a day and stood up.

'Why the hurry? Why don't you stay longer?' Janet could hardly hide her surprise and disappointment.

'I would have really loved to be with you forever, but the youth are having a seminar in the church today.' He smiled genially. 'I must be there.'

'Oh.' She tried to shrug it off.

He stood up and suppressed a belch. 'I must really thank you for the wonderful treatment. Thank you so much.'

'You're welcome. What are friends for?'

He smiled at her. From his pocket, he brought out a small package. 'This is for you.' Gingerly, he handed it to her.

She took it with a broad smile. She opened the wrap. There was a small box. Inside the small box was a pair of diamond studded ear rings.

'Wow! You went through the trouble of getting this for me?'

He nodded happily.

She spread her arms and was in his embrace. It was a very warm one. She gave him a peck while he kissed her on the forehead. For now, the
kiss on the head would suffice.

'We'll see again.' He disengaged himself and moved to the door.

She wished he could stay longer but ... Anyway, he had explained that he had an important event to attend.

She wished he could stay longer but ... Anyway, he had explained that he had an important event to attend.

He went out of her room, Janet was on his heels. She offered to drive him back to his house but he insisted she should not bother herself.

It was a fulfilling day, as far as he was concerned. The church program went smoothly. By the time he returned home, he didn't see any need
for cooking or eating again. While watching a movie in the sitting room, he slept off on the sofa.

He was at the gate of Janet's house and pressed the buzz. He waited for a while. When nobody came out, he pressed the button again. He was about to do so the third time, when he heard approaching footsteps.

'Yes, who's that?' A voice bawled. The gate was partially opened to reveal an important looking man. Raphael was surprised. It was Mr. LaVos
himself.

'Yes? What d'you want?' Mr LaVos was in a hostile mood.

'Good morning sir. I came to see Janet, sir.' Raphael hoped he was respectful enough.

'What for?'

'She's my good friend, sir. She actually invited me...'

'No, you can't see her.' There was grand authority in the man's manners.

With that Mr. LaVos closed the gate.

Raphael was dejected, but with Mr. LaVos on the way, there was nothing he could do. He turned back. He decided to trek to the nearest bus
stop, instead of taking a bike. He was still on his way to the bus stop when someone called him from the back.

He turned.

It was Janet trying to catch up with him. When she got to where he was standing, she didn't even say a word. She clung to him in a tight
embrace.

Raphael woke up. What a dream! He tried to remember everything in that dream. It didn't matter how the dream started, the important thing
was that Janet was with him at the end of it.

Nonso was in her room, lying on the bed half naked. Rhoda was preparing food in the kitchen. It was already past seven in the evening, but Nonso was not in a hurry to go home and be with his family. He had decided he would eat her dinner before he left.

He enjoyed her meal more than his wife's own. He preferred anything Rhoda now more than anyone else's. It was an aberration, but Nonso couldn't see it that way.

He spent more money on Rhoda now than ever. But he didn't mind. Now that Rhoda was out of the reach of his wife and there were no prying
eyes to inhabit his escapade, he was happy with himself.

She entered the room smelling of condiments. If there was any other thing he cherished her for apart from sex, it was her food.

'You smell like something I should eat.' He liked to tease her on how 'delicious' she smelled or looked.

Rhoda laughed. Now that Nonso was fully taking care of her, she was beginning to look fresh and robust.

'Food go soon be ready.' She had been cooking and they would soon eat together.

Nonso nodded, pulled her to himself and played with her thighs.

'Dear, Christmas go soon come o.' There was wistfulness in her tone. 'I go need clothes and money.'

'Yes, I know Christmas is around the corner and that you'll need things. That will be no problem.' He patted her thighs again.

He brought her head close to his and planted a kiss.

Before he could go further, she disengaged herself. 'I still dey cook o,'

Nonso let her be for now.

The examinations were conducted without hitches. As a member of the examinations committee Raphael had an additional task to do. All went
well, anyway. Few days before the Christmas break, the school had its carol service.

It was an exciting and colorful event. The children were gaily dressed while the members of staff dressed with a touch of white or red. Most
members of the school board were there, including the executive director, Mr. LaVos, who came in company of his wife.

In the large air-conditioned hall where the event took place, Janet came to sit by his side. It was becoming an open secret now that
something was going on between them.

Raphael read one of the lessons. At the end of the event, he had to wait for her outside the venue. As admin worker, she had a lot to do in
organizing the event and making sure that everything went well.

'Sorry for keeping you waiting.' She looked a bit tired as she finally came to join him.

He smiled it off. 'What are friends for?'

She smiled too and handed over a polythene bag she was holding. 'For you.'

Without opening it, he could guess what was inside. The aroma said it all. There were packs of fried rice and chicken there.

'You shouldn't have bothered yourself with this' He pointed at the bag. 'I've already eaten to my fill.'

She pointed at it too. 'Then when you take it home, refrigerate it.'

Raphael looked at her and smiled more. 'You're always thinking a step ahead. How could I thank you enough?'

Once again, she smiled it off. 'You don't need to thank me. Come on, hop in. Let's go.'

'If you don't mind, I can drive.' He preceded her to the car and went to the driver's side.

She was surprised. 'Really? And you never said so!'

'Yes I can. I learned it during my service year.'

'Good. Go and take over the wheel.' She handed the keys to him.

Raphael sat behind the steering wheel and fired the engine into life. He reversed out of the parking space easily and drove out of the school
compound.

She sat next to him in elation. 'And you didn't say you could drive all this while.' She certainly had no doubt about his dexterity, going by how
he had handed the car so far.

He laughed shortly. 'It's one of those things.'

She only smiled. He drove in silence for a while. She moved closer to his seat and held him by the right elbow.
