Re: Victims Of Passion by LoveToRead: 6:57am On Aug 04
What an accusation! Raphael felt he was facing a court trial. 'That's not true, ma. Please you can give me your address, give me the date and the time to come. I'll also like Becky to be there. There was never a time I told her about love or promised her anything.

'I think Becky must have been carried away yesterday. She was probably hurt by the fact that I wasn't keen about what she wanted. But really, she's overreacting, especially in the aspects of the lies she told the other lady.'

'Alright.' The caller seemed satisfied for now. 'Thank you.'

'Is Becky there with you, ma'am? Is she the one that gave you my number?' His words poured out as if there would soon be a time out.

'No Becky isn't here. Bye for now.' There was finality in the voice.

The line was disconnected. Raphael starred at the phone as he put it down. His mind raced over his discussions with the caller.

So, Becky would report the matter to her aunt? And she still gave that one the impression that there was a serious relationship between she and him. Why must she go to that extent? Why was she becoming desperate?

He shrugged. God would take care of whatever was coming. No matter how long falsehood travels, it will take one day for truth to catch up with it.

Julie cut the connection. She had put the phone on loud speaker so that her daughter would directly hear the conversation.

'Mummy, what do I believe? D'you really think Raphael is saying the truth?' Janet looked like someone with Hobson's choice.

Julie smiled to herself. 'Personally, I believe he's saying the truth. I deliberately told him I was from Becky's side. If indeed there was something serious between him and Becky, he wouldn't be denying it so stridently, at least to an assumed person from Becky's side. Well, except he is such a very bad guy.'

'What do I do now, mum? Do I go back to him and apologize?'

Her mother smiled and shook her head. 'No, my dear. I will advise that you pretend that the conversation I just had with him did not take place.'

Julie nodded affirmatively. 'Remember you just told your dad that you've broken up with him. Let that impression remain. Let's see how Raphael will handle his challenge. Along the line, we may still learn more about him and Becky. For now, let's leave things as they are, but cheer up my dear.'

Janet gave her mother a big hug. 'Thank you so much, mum. You have taken a burden from my mind. Thank you, mummy.'

He was still surfing the internet when his phone rang again. It was few minutes to twelve. Time always seemed to move fast anytime he was engrossed in doing something.

He checked the caller's number. It was an unknown one. Could Becky's auntie, or sister, or whatever, be calling again?

'Hello?' His voice was prompting.

'Hello. Good day, Raphael.'

He sat up in alert. The voice sounded like Becky's own.

'Hello. Good day.' There was aloofness in his voice.

'Raphael, I want to say I'm sorry about what happened. I want to see you. Can I come over to your place to see you?'

He was ruffled. 'What? See me and give me more trouble?'

She laughed over the line. 'No, Raphael. I can assure you that I won't give you any trouble.'

'So, what trick are you up to this time? Will the allegation change from attempted rape to actual rape?'

'Please, Raphael, I can assure you that there will be no such accusation. I'm begging you. I need to see you.'

There was a long pause. He was obviously in a quandary.

'Raphael, I can assure you that Becky means no harm. Do you want me to swear? I'm ready to do so.' Her voice was plaintive. He decided to believe her.

'There's no need to swear. Alright, you can come over. I'm at home.'

'I'll soon be there. I'm already in your neighborhood.' The line went dead.

Even as he sat down and awaited her, he wondered if he was doing the right thing. Five minutes after she called, she was at his door.

'Good morning, Raphael.' Her face looked remorseful. She was wearing a white t-shirt on jeans trousers and didn't look seductive this time.

'Good morning.' He stood calmly at the door. 'Maybe we should talk outside.'

'No. Let's go inside.' She gave him a big smile. 'I'm serious; I didn't come for any trouble.'

He eyed her briefly and sighed. 'Alright, come in.'

He decided on the seat closest to the door. She sat on another seat not too far from him.

'First and foremost, let me apologize for the way I acted yesterday. I was carried away.'

She went on her knees and raised her hands as if in supplication.

He expressed surprise. 'Why're you doing that?'

'Raphael, I'm so sorry for everything that has happened. Please forgive me.'

'You don't have to kneel down. Stand up, please.'

'Let me remain like this. It shows that I'm indeed serious.'

She looked very innocent and remorseful. He stared at her in wonder. What an irony. Just a day ago, she was the one daring and acting like she must be pleased willy-nilly. Now, she was the one showing a contrite heart.

Raphael had no option than to stop whatever misgivings he had about her.

'It's okay, Becky. Please, get up. To err is human. Who am I not to forgive you? Please stand up.' He gestured that she should stand up.

'Are you sure you've really forgiven me? That you don't have any ill-feeling towards me?'

'Of course, Becky. I don't bear any grudge against you. Stop knelling and sit down, please.'

'Thank you.' She got up and sat on the sofa.

'The major problem is not with me.' He cleared his throat. 'The major problem is with Janet. She believed everything you told her and has cut off my relationship with her. What are you going to do about that?'

Becky nodded. She too had thought of that. 'I'm coming to that. I've thought of it and I realized that I have to talk to her again. Before that stage, Raphael, there's something I want you to do for me.'

He stared at her briefly. 'What could that be?'

She stared back at him.

'Tell me, is it legal?' He clasped his hands. 'Is it morally alright? Is it something I can do? If it is not any of the things I mentioned, then count me out.'

Becky smiled and nodded. 'Yes, it's something legal, morally right and something you can do.'

'Well, then, tell me.'

She allowed another pause. 'Raphael, I want us to be good friends.'

He laughed shortly. 'Are we not friends already? What are you saying?'

'We're friends already, but not good friends. I want us to be good friends.' She had emphasized the words, good friends.

'It depends on what you mean by good friends. How will you define it?' The way he asked was like a teacher asking a petulant student.

'You're the English language teacher and you're asking me to define good friendship? Come on, Raphael.'

'I need to clarify things.'

She remained evasive. 'See, the friendship will not affect your relationship with Janet. You can go ahead and marry her. I'll even attend your wedding.' She smiled cracked her knuckles.

Raphael smiled too. 'This friendship you're talking about, will it involve intimacy? I mean real intimacy?'

She clouded her face. 'I'm sorry I'm at a loss on what you mean by real intimacy.'

'Come on, Becky, you know what I mean.'

She shook her head. 'Please, explain it.'

'Alright.' He stared at her again. 'Will it involve sex?'

She made a face as if she was shocked by his question. 'Raphael, look at you, so you have such a dirty mind.'

He was forced to be on the defensive. 'I don't have any dirty mind. I only asked you a question. Will it involve intimacy?'

'Yes, but no sex.' She laughed as if that was a joke.

He made a face. 'That's contradiction.'

'No. I just wanted to hear you out when you asked for the meaning of intimacy. I too have ideas of what intimacy is all about.' She paused. Her listener waited patiently. 'To me, it doesn't have to involve sex.'

'Really? Intimacy between a male and a female usually involves it.'

She shrugged it off. 'Anyway, I don't have that in mind. My mind is not on that at all. You're the one thinking so. Are you at peace now?'

'I'm always at peace. I asked that question for clarification purpose.' He got up from his seat and paced around the sitting room. Becky let him be.

'So, can you just say the things you'll expect from me as a good friend?' He stopped his pacing and faced her.

She smiled again. 'I know you know the answer already. A good friend is someone one can confide in, someone to talk to, and someone one can rely on when the need arises.'

He nodded in agreement. 'If that's all you want as a good friend, then you can count on me.'

The smile she gave was the brightest he had seen on her, so far.

'Really? Come and give me a hug.' She stood up and spread her hands.

He went to her and they hugged briefly.

'That's good.' She looked contended. 'Now, we're moving on.'

He sat down again. 'Now, let's discuss Janet's matter.'
