Got to 5:35. Question asked to that point is absurd. It implies all those atoms et al are what influence one's choices in complete disregard to the intellect and wisdom of the chooser. Surely they may have a role to play and even more so with some.

I find I have a will. It's a force I extend when I say "let there be food on my table" and there is food. I've tested it even. Sometimes I state precisely what food I will on my table and that food is there. Yesterday, I willed penne piscatora, it was delicious. But my will does not extend to just what I shove in my mouth. Nor of course can I just will willy nilly and there is light or anything like that. But within my own capabilities, which I constantly improve, my will is free for me to chose to use or not use, and whenever I don't, I end up eating yesterdays leftovers. Thankfully it tastes so good!

What did you make of it. Need I watch the rest?

You should watch it to the end.

I think the point Cosmic Skeptic was trying to make was that if you went back in time to the point of any decision there would be no way you would change the decision you made because everything right down to the quantum states of the atoms that make up the synapses of your brains will be unchanged. As far as we know there is nothing that is independent of our physical makeup that is making decisions; all decisions arise from your brain states, bodily chemical balances and whatever other influences in your environment.

I agree with you that we do have a wills that enable us to make decisions but I am no longer seeing that will as free. Our wills seem to be chained to an elaborate, almost unexplorable sequence of cause and effect which means our actions are very much on rails. However I don't think it means that our fates are decided or that our futures are set in stone.

Christians so often ask, “How can I know the will of God?” We want to know His will. We need to know it if we’re going to live the abundant life He has for us. But to know His will, we must know God Himself—and not just head knowledge. We must know His ways. https://josephifeanyiblog..com/2019/01/knowing-gods-will-for-you.html

Jordan Peterson is an intelligent person but he blabs most time.

Matt really got him when he(Jordan) said atheists are not really atheists, Jordan is known to always say that in debates but Matt advised him to stop saying that again.

I subscribed to "determinism" long time ago but still I'm not sure which actually is the accurate. Destiny is out of it I don't subscribe to that.

How to Preach the Gospel

There is no intention in this chapter of presenting an elaborate treatise on homiletics. It simply aims to give practical suggestions for the preparation of sermons that will win souls for Christ and edify believers. This practical ways are gotten from my own self experience.

1. FIRST GET YOUR TEXT OR SUBJECT.

A great many neglect to do that, and when they get through preaching they do not know what they have been talking about, neither does the audience. Never get up to speak without having something definite in your mind to speak about. There may be exceptions to that rule.
There are times when one is called on suddenly to speak, and one has a right then to look to God for subject matter and manner of address. There are other times when one has made full preparation, but it becomes evident when he is about to speak that he must take up some other line of truth. In such a case also, one must depend upon God. But under ordinary circumstances, one should either have something definite in his mind that he is to speak about, or else keep silent. It is true God has said in His Word, "Open thy mouth wide and I will fill it" (Psalm 81:10), but this promise, as the context clearly shows, has nothing whatever to do with our opening our mouth in speaking. Most people who take this promise as applying to their preaching, and who make their boast that they never prepare beforehand what they are going to say, when they open their mouths have them filled with anything but the wisdom of God. Christ did say to His disciples, "Take no thought how or what ye shall speak; for it shall be give you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you" (Matthew 10:19-20); but this promise did not have to do with preaching, but with witnessing for Christ in circumstances of emergency and peril. In all cases of similar emergency, we have a right to rest in the same promise, and we have a right also to take the spirit of it as applying to our preaching. But if one has an opportunity to prepare for the services before him, and neglects that opportunity, God will not set a premium upon his laziness and neglect, by giving him a sermon in his time of need. https://josephifeanyiblog..com/2019/02/how-to-prepare-sermon.html

An interesting watch indeed. Always been a Rationality Rules fangirl smiley

I'm finding it difficult to define free will as "In the past, it was possible for me to have acted in two different ways". That just isn't logically possible.

People act ONE way because there is only ONE past, only ONE set of events in the past. The past is deterministic because it already happened. That's why i can't really fathom defining free will with any kind of action that had already happened in the past. Maybe its me, but it just doesn't make logical sense.

Except for the fact that it is much wiser and longer in the tooth me who would be going back. Unless my synapses revert back to the state they too were in the past, I can assure you that much wiser me would most definitely make lots of different choices if I went back with my current mind intact.

Yes, one set of events in the past, but one still had a choice in which events in the past determine the future. I can't imagine a time when a course of action I took was not chosen by me. I might wave been ignorant about the subsequent outcome, but the choice was still mine, to a very large extent.

I agree, there is no "destiny". I think our conscious decisions are interacting within the deterministic framework to produce what we refer to as the past, present and future. I picture it like a funnel, with the future spread out then narrowing until it comes the present then goes on to be a singular stream like the past.

hmmm, so you won't even grant it as "potentially possible that in the past I could have acted differently"?

Except thats not the scenario being presented. You are going back to that decision point without any extra knowledge, if you did then you have fundamentally changed the past already.
